A tradition in Boston’s historic North End. We have been serving generations of families, locals and tourists in the North End since 1931. People crave the taste of our food. Some say their mouths water just thinking about eating here. That’s why when we change even the slightest thing, they let us know it. Some things should stay just as they are.
"We have found their service to be good, but the food was OK. Nothing more than traditional pasta and average wine list. We ordered different meals for 6 people and the price was above expectations. Overall was a good place to be, but not above expectations."

"Hostess needs more experience in seating reservations. She seated our guests at a different table upon arriving, We did not meet up for approximately 20 minutes after our reserved reservation. What an embarrassment for us ?"

"My wife and I venture into Boston a couple of times a year and we always have a great time and it either starts or ends with us at Cantina Italiana. The food and service are always incredible. Everyone treats to make you feel special and make your evening and experience. My hates off to the kichen staff as the Specials truely are SPECIAL and teh food quality is always outstanding."

"Omar great waiter. Food good, not outstanding; presentation good. We did not ask for prices on specials, and mostly ordered specials (which Omar seemed to promote--no surprise), but overall they averaged twice the price of the printed menu. Given the gap, the high road would be for the place to volunteer prices--plenty of places do. Second. we arrived at 1:45 for a 2:00 reservation. Our table appeared to be ready, but we were not seated until 2:00 sharp. In the meantime, my sons and I ordered drinks at the bar, which is where one stands waiting to be seated. Maybe that's the point. This place ranks high in Boston on Trip Advisor--100+ out of 2,200--but it's on a par with other North End Italian we've had, some ranked way lower."

"We had a really nice meal, nice sevice, and excellent food. I love the traditional dishes here -- lasagne, bolognese sause, and spaghetti carbonara (not from the menu, but they will make it the way I like it, if I ask!) I also love the bar-area -- very cosy, with a great view out onto Hanover Street, and very friendly service. The only reason I gave it less than a 5 was because I was not thrilled with the table, right in front of the kitchen with constant traffic though a narrow pathway beside it.
Still, I have been to this restaurant a number of times, I've always enjoyed it, and I am sure I will be back often!"

"Excellent service by the entire staff. We went for a pre-show dinner and the service was quick and efficient. We enjoyed the bread, oil and cheese as we decided on our entrees. The salads were excellent. I had eggplant parm and it was good, almost too much food. It was sleet/rain outside and the staff hailed a cab for us which was above what a restaurant needs to do and was greatly appreciated. This was our second visit and I would recommend it to anyone."

"I took my sons (21 and 23 years old) there for dinner, for the younger ones' 21st birthday. He attends college at Berklee in Boston and wanted to have a good Italian meal in the North End. We were greated warmly, given a nice table and treated attentively. We had reservations for 7 p.m. but called because we were going to be about an hour late, and our request was accommodated easily. The food was TERRIFIC, and both "kids" were so full they didn't have room for dessert. Total bill with 1 drink each and dessert for me - to go - with tip was $150.00. The restaurant has a small cozy bar where if you had to wait, you could. We even found a free parking spot ourselves, though they do valet. A definite success!"

"This was our seventh time at this restaurant. We have never had a bad meal there. My fiancee always tells me to order the appetizer I want, but as she loves mussels we always order the mussels with red sauce. The restaurant is definately old school Italian and a North End standout."

"The restaurant was wonderful! A group of us went there before a concert and we were very impressed. The staff was attentive, friendly and professional and the food was amazing. Both the drink menu and the dinner menu had a great amount of choices. I would definately go back."

"We were warmly welcomed and had attentive service. Our server did not identify himself by name, or if he did, it was difficult to understand. The salads and desserts we had were excellent, but the main courses were disappointing. The marinara sauce on chickem parmesan and on veal parmesan was bland and lacked flavor. It would have been nice if pasta had accompanied the veal/eggplant parmesan dish (as it did with chicken parmesan), but was available only for an upcharge of $6. Bread was served with flavorless dipping oil. We were hoping for flavorful and delicious Italian food in Boston's North End, but found the main dishes to be mediocre at best."

"We visited for restaurant week but ultimately found (seemingly) more appealing menu choices.
The food is fair. When we were, years ago, Boston newbies, we enjoyed Cantina. Great, if not excellent, food, and the restaurant exuded a warm atmosphere and "family intimate" setting.
Jump to March 2013: too many menu options are the same as yesteryear, the seating, tables, walls, and carpets are tired and worn, table candles remain unlit, and the food is merely fair. The dish's names are appealing: but they're rehashes. Although still reasonably priced, there are better bets at all pricepoints. A highlight was the service: an attentive staff still does their best. But they know the place has seen its finest hour. Goodbye, Cantina."

"Our son lives in the North End and we were up to visit this week. We are having fun trying different restaurants in the area and Cantina Italiana was on the short list, especially since they take reservations. We were greeted warmly, had a great waiter named Sal, and a delicious dinner. i am a fan of any kind of pasta bolognese, and their version was very good!"

"What a lovely experience. The Italian gentleman must have been the owner, and was charming , warm and very kind. You can get this type of old school Italian elsewhere, but the entire experience they provide is rare. We just felt so at home and looked after , the treatment you get when you are a regular. This was our first visit and wont be our last."

"I went with an Italian friend who makes her own pasta and bolognese sauce. While I thought the food was delicious, she gave my tagliatelle and bolognese sauce and her gnocchi two thumbs up - a true compliment. We shared a rucola salad to start that was lightly drizzled with lemon and olive oil. Competed with a nice chianti and a visit by the owner, I felt transported to old-time Italy. Service was outstanding."

"LOVED this restaurant! The OWNER (great guy!) greeted us and showed us to our table, held all of our drinks (we got a drink at the bar expecting to have to wait since the place was busy, but they had a table ready for us almost right away) while we got settled, and had the most pleasant, happy demeanor of any restaurant SERVER I've ever met, let alone an owner! It was like we were the best thing to happen to him all day! The server was also amazing - very courteous, friendly, and helpful. Food was delicious, great specials, and an extensive wine list. This place doesn't have the best ambiance of all the north end restaurants, but it's certainly nice inside. But what made this experience for us was definitely the people. Highly recommend!"

"The night I went Cantina Italiana, it was on the night of my boyfriend's birthday. It was full, packed and we waiting in line for ten minutes until we were seated. Once we were seated the service was awesome. We ordered Mussels (in the white sauce) and that was delectable and the broth had us dipping our breads in it non-stop. I had a lobster and shrimp pasta my boyfriend loved. My server, Lucy was patient, kind and polite. She made sure that my birthday boy and I were well served and well fed. She also made sure to ask me what dessert would my birthday boy love to have and suddenly she came out with a piece of delicious Tiramisu with a candle in it singing "Happy Birthday" to my happy yet embarrassed love. Overall I give it a thumbs up!"

"We went here on my son's 21st birthday...we went for lunch so had a lovely round table near the front....we had a space that felt like our own and we had a wonderful time. The waiter was perfect. Helpful and available but not overbearing at all. The food was very good and we ordered a very reasonably priced California Cabernet. Definitely would recommend the Cantina for a group celebrating a special occasion."

"Good food, acceptable service but Saturday night dinner was extremely, almost intolerably loud. Impossible to have a conversation without shouting. Also, seating for 7 was six people in a booth with a chair stuck on the end in the aisle."

"We haven't been to Cantina Italiana in years only because there are so many restaurants in the North End and so little time! The food was delicious. Great place to meet friends. Not pretentious at all. Place was better lit than I remember, looks like it had been spruced up a bit. The neon sign on the front is a real classic but could use some attention. Overall, great place for food & drink!"

"Our understanding is that this is one of the oldest restaurants in Boston's North End. This was our first visit and to be fair, it was Saturday night on a holiday weekend at peak time so it was packed with tourists (we are locals). The food was good to very good, albeit that it took our starters an unusally long time to arrive and when the entrees arrived, they could have been a bit hotter. That being said, my husband had chicken Gino with eggplant which was very nice and I had chicken parm which was fine except that rigatoni underneath it was cold. The owner was visable and pleasant amidst the atmosphere that was frenetic. Bottom line, we would certainly give it another try, possibly mid week or for lunch."

"This is old school North End. I think all of the restaurants in the North End are pretty good and this one is competitive but not as expensive. Picture the European in 1975. They should dim the lights. I liked the food, you can make a reservation, they have a valet...I like it."

"The food was really good but we had a reservation and still had to wait about 1/2 an hour. The service was okay but nothing to write home about. I do realize it was a saturday night but I felt like the waiter wasn't tending to our table like he was to other tables. Good food though and I would recommend it for sure."

"Doesn't have all the glitz of some of the newer looking restaurants in the North End but has all the charm of the old world and the food is fabulous. It's a little noisy and the booth seating is not all that comfortable but then again you are really going there for the food."
