Rosa Mexicano - Chevy Chase
In 1984, Rosa Mexicano set a new standard for Mexican cuisine when it first opened in New York City. Playing a leading role in defining what was then a "new" cuisine to American diners, Rosa Mexicano delivers authentic Mexican cooking in an accessible, stylishly festive atmosphere. Rosa Mexicano's menu features a range of award-winning signature dishes, including our Guacamole en Molcajete, in a traditional lava rock mortar. Described by Time Out New York as "green ecstasy in a stone bowl," it is prepared table side and served with house made chips, warm corn tortillas and condiment salsas. Rosa Mexicano is also known for the Frozen Pomegranate Margarita, as well as the modern and festive ambiance.

"This was a Gilt City deal and it was amazing. We had 3 courses, including two margarita tasters and a pitcher of sangria. Guc and chips to commence, entree's and desserts. Overall this was a very good deal, and I would purchase it again."

"After a very pleasent meal several months ago, we tryed to go back and enjoy again. The food is still very good. Moderate portion sizes and fresh ingrediants. Drinks are too pricy and extra small sized to boot. We were a table of 4 looking to just have a good meal. The tbles on either side of us were seated after us and left long before us. Very disappointed with the service. Final straw was on in our party ordered ice cream and for $8 he was brought a tiny scoop of of ice cream. We waited a very long time between ordering and the delivery of the ordered items."

"Exquisite tastes -- so nice in Mexican restaurants. Just wonder why the bill always seems higher than expected at Rosa Mexicano -- maybe I should have asked the price on the "upgraded" Margerita the waiter sold me on. Still great dining experience- - outdoors on a lovely spring evening."

"The entire experience was great until the host seating a family directly next to us when most of the restaurant was not full. The family had young children that were screaming and yelling constantly and being very disruptive. If the host had sat this family further away from us, I don't think we would have had an issue."

"I recalled valet parking on a prior visit that was not longer available. When I was paying the bill we realized the server forgot to bring my food back in a to go box. After asking him he ran into the kitchen to return with a box. I didn't think to check the box and closed out the bill. When reheating my leftovers I found only half my food in the box. This was very disappointing considering I asked him to box everything. I have no clue if this was actually my plate of food or someone elses. I will no longer allow any of your servers to box my food for me fearing it will not be there or be someone else's. To clarify the other member of my household wouldn't have eaten the missing portion."

"We recently dined at Rosa Mexico in Chevy Chase and were very disappointed. We had eaten downtown many times and really liked the food, atmosphere and service. Chevy Chase falls far short on two of those. The food was excellent, but the service was terribly slow and the back room where we sat was devoid of ambiance or warmth. We waited much too long for every aspect of the meal. For example, after waiting 30 minutes to order and another 15 minutes for our drinks to arrive, we ordered a second set of drinks for our meals. Unfortunately, those drinks didn't show up until after we had finished our meal. Obviously, we decided to take a pass on dessert."

"Where have I been? Rosa Mexicano moves to Chevy Chase DC!! Didn't realize it till I drove by and noticed the sign. Went right away and had a fabulous meal in a quiet space, OK it was Easter night! LOL, but really downtown way too noisy for me. And I am delighted to have them so much closer with parking not such an issue. This is the only place in DC that I know of the serves a Michelada (sangrita or Bloody Mary type mix and beer)- my fav. The scallop tortilla/enchilada with salsa verde was delicious!! Waiter was patient with our wacky mood. Art on the back water wall with the Acapulco diver sculptures is awesome."

"Rosa Mexicano used to be my favorite restaurant. Now if I never go again it will be a good thing. What happened???? Went this time because I craved the Budin. No longer was it delicious, filled with moist chicken and topped with melting cheese and decorated with flavorful sauce. It was dry to the point of almost inedible. Quality reminded me of airplane food. Now the chicken was ground, dry, tastless meat with overdone cheese (no ooze) and very little sauce to moisten the whole thing with. Terrible waste of $75 for two. Husbands meal was just okay."

"I feel weird calling it a "neighborhood gem" when there are several locations, and it's not as active as the Chinatown location, but it's kind of nice not to have to fight for bar space and still get those phenomenal margaritas.
I wouldn't mark it as kid-friendly just because we weren't there during the dinner rush, but early on in the evening it seemed like there was plenty of room for kids."

"The food was great, as we have come to expect at the downtown location. That didn't overcome service that, although abundant and welcoming, didn't seem capable of accomplishing what we were after. Our Open Table reservation noted our schedule for a play downtown and the driving time needed - giving an hour and 3/4 for the meal. We ordered dessert with 20 minutes to go. Neither the dessert nor the (adjusted) check made it by our time to leave, and we were late for the curtain downtown. We recommend the restaurant if you have no schedule at the other end."

"Went on a Gilt City voucher for Sunday brunch. Magnifico! Started off with 4oz tasters of Pomegrate Margaritas, a perfect balance of alcohol and fruit. Next came Rosa Mexicano's legendary guacamole and chips. Then a choice of entrees---in this case a chile-dusted stuffed brioche french toast with carmelized plantains and a lively scramble of eggs,tomatoes, and chiles with tortillas. To wash it all down, there was a pitcher of Sangria, red or white. Hope you aren't full, because the deal concluded with a small pitcher of Mexican Hot Chocolate and churros. Suffice to say dinner was a non-starter!!"

"Service was great, waiter was perfectly attentive and patient as we waited for a member of our party. We really enjoyed the food and each had a different variety of the tacos. Crab turnovers and Guac were perfect sharable apps and the sangria was delicious as well. Our apps/entrees were reasonably priced but our drinks did some damage, 3 people and the bill was $200 (total). Worth it for a good night out."

"We went specifically for the pre-fixe Passover menu, which wasn't strictly kosher for Passover (for instance, they used corn and beans in their menu). But, it all the food was delicious and very creative. The room was too noisy, however. It got very crowded and noisy at dinner. I think the wait staff tried really hard but were pretty stressed; however, they were all very nice."

"We were intrigued by the Mexican Passover menu so we gave it a try (the entire prix-fixe dinner) hoping for a twist on the familiar Passover food. What we got was a twist alright, dominated by hot peppers of all kinds which was merciless for most of us.
The lavish menu seemed to shrink to very few choices that did not mention hot-peppers in the description, but even those turned up as trojan-horses with heat; e.g.: Duck-egg tacos, Brisket in bannana-leaf, and the mango cup(even the dessert???)

"The service was very pleasant but definitely leisurely (we were there for Sunday brunch). My food was not what I expected, but I chalk that up to insufficient knowledge of the cuisine. The staff was very helpful with a high chair, stroller storage, and other baby-related stuff. The hot chocolate was amazing--notes of almond were especially clear and delicious."

"Decor is very cool, especially the diving men in the fountain! Service was very pleasant and attentive. Food was delicious, definitely upscale Mexican. That's reflected in the price, which is certainly higher than your average Tex Mex place, but we thought it was worth it since the ambiance and food were much better than those places! Make sure you get the guacamole (handmade table-side!) A good reliable date night."

"The service was quite poor from beginning to end. It took them almost 30 minutes to seat us. We checked in multiple times and despite promises for seating, it never happened until I complained vociferously (they never even checked us in). And, the seat was poorly located - right at the kitchen entrance.
The service was not slow, but inaccurate. We had to return some dishes (something, I NEVER do) because of dietary restrictions. THe mango margarita was terrible. Basically ice and dash of mango juice. The waiter never brought more water or chips, etc. The guacamole was good.
I suspect there must be some incentive to not report to Open Table because every time I go to this restaurant they try to not give me credit for eating the"

"very disappointed. took advantage of the $56 Gilt City sangria brunch promotional and were presented with a bill for $76.26. Nota Torrejas, the Mexican version of french toast, were burnt - one could smell the burnt toast in the restaurant - and without much taste, but the fried plaintains were which accompanied it were overly sweet. The guacamole was good, though, as prepared at table by the guacamolista - I kid you not. The hot chocolate was brought to the table without mugs and we had to ask several times for them while the chocolate cooled. All in all very overpriced and disappointing."
