Restaurant Reviews for The Pelican Club

The Pelican Club reservations The Pelican Club

312 Exchange Alley
New Orleans, LA 70130

The Pelican Club, offering a wide range of fabulous New Orleans dishes, consists of three dining rooms and a large bar fashioned from a handsome, 19th-century French Quarter townhouse, rising from the corner of Bienville Street and Exchange Place in the heart of the French Quarter. Owner, Richard Hughes, and his wife, Jean Stinnett-Hughes, transformed a neglected architectural gem into a welcoming restaurant decorated in a crisp blend of traditional and contemporary. Each room has its own ambiance, created with such diverse elements as burnished Louisiana cypress, contemporary paintings by New Orleans artists, antique prints, and the dramatic contrast of black-leather banquettes against cream-colored brick walls. Such an atmosphere is sure to make your meal feel like a truly New Orleans experience.

"We went to The Pelican Club about 14 years ago and returned this past weekend. I was not disappointed. The food was just as I had remembered - EXCELLENT! Everyone in my party had a wonderful time. I will recommend this place to any/everyone who goes to New Orleans. It's just 2 blocks from the Marriott on Canal. I will return there when going to New Orleans again!!"

Review 2 for The Pelican Club

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Great Location, Very nice atmosphere. Made reservation way in advance, everything started out wonderful-but after waiting an hour and half for our entree, we decided to pay for wine and leave. The waiter came by once and said sorry for the delay, serving a very large party put things behind. So we continued to wait, but after the hour and half, decided to leave. Small, but lovely, but one large party and your toast."

Review 3 for The Pelican Club

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"The Pelican Club is an outstanding choice in New Orleans. Food is creole style with southern flair. Gumbo was one of the best in N.O. I had the Trio Duck which is three cuts of duck cooked three different ways. It was very good and the flavors were wonderful. White Bread Pudding is excellent. There was not a bad thing on the menu and the service was very good. Wine list is diverse and reasonable. I have read many reviews on this restaurant and others in N.O. Travelers need to realize the restaurants are smaller (old buildings= smaller spaces) so you are going to be close to other tables. This means it is going to be "energetic" but it is part of the atmosphere. Don't complain and enjoy the food!"

Review 4 for The Pelican Club

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I love the relaxed feel of this place. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The crab cake appetizer was amazing. The table was split on which was better the lamb or the duck. Everyone loved the filet steak. Service was well-timed and friendly, wines were affordable."

Review 5 for The Pelican Club

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We had a reservation for 8:30 and were not seated until nearly 9:30. The food was excellent but the kitchen was very slow. This was my first time at the resturant and I was very dissapointed. I would be open to try again because the food was so good and it was unique place. Maybe just an off night."

Review 6 for The Pelican Club

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Tucked in an alley in the French Quarter, this was a nice meal. I requested our waiter, Eric, to select my meal from the price fixe' menu. He made excellent choices all along the way. I started with the corn and crab bisque , which was a sweet mixture. He then brought a seared scallop dish that was superbly cooked with delicious citrus sauce. The main entree' was a lightly crusted flounder with a great tasting chili sauce. The meal was good, the food was plentiful without being too much. The atmosphere was upper echelon, but frindly. A definite eatery when in the French Quarter. A special note to fussy eaters, when my daughter could not find something on the menu to her liking. The waiter found something off menu."

Review 10 for The Pelican Club

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"This was our annual Reveillon dinner with our two adult children, so it is a special occasion. We very much enjoyed it. The food was very good and the waitstaff was pleasant, unobtrusive and for the most part served us very well. Having a holiday dinner in the French Quarter always feels special and this one did not let us down. One minor complaint and I guess this just reveals my old school dining philosophy: At one point in the meal, our server attempted to pick up empty plates from those who had finished while others had not finished that same course. I believe that a properly served meal in a good restaurant requires the serving of a course to all at the table and to wait until all finished until pickup. Why is this so commonly abused?"

Review 11 for The Pelican Club

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Tonight's dining experience compared to last Christmas Eve's dinner was 180 degrees apart.

We arrived on time & seated quickly; but, the table reserved for us was an after thought as we were wedged between two large table groups, one of 8 and one of 10-11. The bench seat my wife had was unsatisfactory but there were no other tables set up for 2 people to move to.

The appetizer and baked oysters were fine; but, it took forever to get our entree. We both ordered the lobster, shrimp, & scallops. The shrimp were fine, the scallops browned on one side for some reason, & the lobster was tough.

We were totally disappointed & sorry we went there tonight. Add to that the noise level. Regretably, at $175 total we will not return again.

Review 14 for The Pelican Club

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Overall the place was good, but our experience on arrival soured the whole impression of the place. We had a reservation but there were about 40 people all waiting to be seated when we arrived (on time). It took 30 minutes and three separate requests to be seated before we finally got our table. They could have offered us a drink at the bar and we would have been perfectly fine and would have enjoyed the experience far more. Having said that, once we got our seats the food was pretty good and the atmosphere was nice. There were two large groups that seemed to be sapping resources but still had decent food and the prices are very reasonable."

Review 15 for The Pelican Club

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Among the best food in New Orleans! Blue crab ravioli with wild mushrooms appetizer was excellent. The lump crab meat and shrimp cake starter was also a delight to the taste buds. It included fried green tomato with a pineapple-jalapeno chutney. Our entree of seared tuna and a Napa cabbage slaw was delicious and filling. The white chocolate bread pudding dessert was a little disappointing. Server was attentive and spaced servings of courses for a pleasant dinner."
