The Pelican Club
The Pelican Club, offering a wide range of fabulous New Orleans dishes, consists of three dining rooms and a large bar fashioned from a handsome, 19th-century French Quarter townhouse, rising from the corner of Bienville Street and Exchange Place in the heart of the French Quarter. Owner, Richard Hughes, and his wife, Jean Stinnett-Hughes, transformed a neglected architectural gem into a welcoming restaurant decorated in a crisp blend of traditional and contemporary. Each room has its own ambiance, created with such diverse elements as burnished Louisiana cypress, contemporary paintings by New Orleans artists, antique prints, and the dramatic contrast of black-leather banquettes against cream-colored brick walls. Such an atmosphere is sure to make your meal feel like a truly New Orleans experience.

"A friendly shopkeeper recommended the Pelican Club to us and are so glad we visited. Hands down -- the most amazing bread pudding I've ever had. Light, custardy, not too sweet with amazing drizzles of chocolate. The other dishes also lovely, particularly the scallop citrus sauce on the red fish. The host was a bit full of himself but our waitress more than made up for it. Would definitely recommend the Pelican if for no more than a drop-by for dessert!"

"We sat in the first room where we could see out on Exchange and get some light. this room was quiet and not as loud as back rooms. We had great service and actually everything we ordered didn't disapoint. large and lucious lobster scallops and schrimp. Appetizers not to big so that 1/2 an entree could be taken home. We were too full for dessert."

"The Pelican Club is very nice. Always good for 6 or more. The hostess and bartenders are not very personable or even pleasant. They are somewhat snooty and rude. This is twice we have had this experience. It will be our last.

"Lots of waiters ready to service your every need, white tablecloths, art on the walls, and very good food and cocktails. What's not to like? (the bill) One of their specialties is whole encrusted fish, usually flounder, but the night we went it was redfish. Delicious, served almost Chinese style with a sweet-spicy sauce. The drum with crab on top was good, too, as were the Italian salad and the goat cheese salad. We were too full to sample the desserts. The Black Orchid cocktail was excellent. I'd give it 5 stars but it's up against some amazing competition in NOLA. We were there on a Friday night of Jazz Fest, and the service was still perfect."

"This is one of my favorite New Orleans restaurants. The ambiance is fantastic. I adore the local artwork. In fact, I discovered Martin Laborde's whimsical Bodo paintings at the Pelican Club (I now own two). The food is fantastic and always consistent. This year we went with a variety of appetizers. The mushroom/crawfish raviolis were particularly good. We also had the "barbequed" shrimp and crawfish and crab cakes. All had fabulous flavors. The service has also always been wonderful, even when the restaurant is packed. The servers are knowledgeable and very personable."

"Ate here twice in two days due to the food quality and desserts made by Claudette. The bread pudding and flour less chocolate cake are out of this world. I cancelled a Saturday night reservation at GW Fins to come here again with my husband. So much on the menu to try you need to come here at least 4 or 5 times to try everything you want to eat. This is not a tourist place. It is filled with locals such as the Tulane MD seated next to us at the next table. Quiet and relaxed even during French Quarter Festival!!"

"I hadn't been to the Pelican Club in over 20 years, I was looking for a restaurant to celebrate our 10 year Anniversary and while looking at the list of local restaurants, I came upon The Pelican Club, I read the reviews and decided this was the place. With great pleasure I can pronouce it certainly was the right place. From the reviews everyone had praised the Rack of Lamb, so I ordered it and my pallette was deliciously satisfied, my husband's flounder was to die for! It was a very enjoyable evening and the service was impeccable. Kuodos for still be one of the elite restaurants in the Big Easy."

"Our dining experience at The Pelican Club was wonderful, as expected! We try to eat there whenever we visit New Orleans. The menu changes seasonally, so we are always trying different dishes. We usually have a group of 6-8 people, so we tend to order many dishes so that we can sample a variety of appetizers and main courses. Everything was fantastic! Our server was friendly, courteous, and attentive. We would recommend The Pelican Club to anyone that wants a special dining experience."

"The restaurant is tucked into a quiet corer of the otherwise frenetic French Quarter. My crab and crawfish cakes were outstanding. Accompanied by a light remoulade sauce and a slice of fried green tomato, I really felt like I was in the South. Likewise, the rack of lamb (a generous 8 ribs) was so good that even my wife, who ordinarily doesn't like lamb, commented on how much she enjoyed it. For desert, the chocolate decadence cake, which was more than enough for two to share, was truly decadent. The wine list includes a strong selection of both new and old world offerings and is accompanied by a knowledgeable sommelier. The Pelcan Club was clearly the best meal of my three nights in The Big Easy."

"We had a grand dinner at Pelican Club, the best meal the four of us had had in a week of dining in New Orleans, which is really saying something. Appetizers, main courses, dessert, wine, and cognac were all excellent, and wine was competitively priced. Our waiter, whose name I unfortunately do not remember, was attentive, helpful, and a pleasure to deal with generally. It's hard to pick out any one course from what we had, but my raspberry sorbet with blueberries was out of this world and clearly made fresh in the restaurant. One of my best experiences in twenty years on and off of visiting and dining in the Crescent City."

"Great location near Bourbon but not to close. Had a party of 20 well traveled business people with strong opinions. Everyone gave the food and service a "great" review. I've eaten at most of the staple high end restaurants in NOLA. This very well be the overall best I've had here. Escargot and fish dishes are a must."

"The food at the Pelican Club was very good - however, the Pelican Club holds itself out to be "fine dining" in NOLA - the evening we were there, there were people in jeans & t'shirts, wearing baseball caps AT THE TABLE, using cell phones. The Pelican Club is hurting their desire to be among the top restaurants in NOLA by not enforcing any sort of dress code. Our meal was good, the service good but ambiance was pretty much non-existent. If the Pelican Club "needs" the tourist crowd that badly, they should make it known to the rest of us who want a dining experience. Had supper the next night at a French Quarter fine dining establishment - men in jackets, no cell phones & NO baseball caps. Give us what we are paying for."

"We dined at the Pelican Club for Valentines Day 2013. This has been our fourth trip to the Pelican Club and, as before, it did not disappoint. Since it was busy, they had a limited À la carte menu that also contained a prix fixe option. Both my wife and I had the Panéed Drum topped with lump crab meat and accompanied by potatoes, green beans and corn maque choux. I also had a cup of corn and crab bisque. We enjoyed a bottle of Sonoma-Cutrer. Everything was wonderful. The walls of the room in which we dined were adorned with works of art from the world renowned local artist James Michalopoulos, whose studio is right next door. All I have to say is, I'm ready to go back!"

"The food was excellent! We chose the prix fixe menu. Each course was better than the course before it. The portions are huge (plus complimentary bread). Overall, the value was excellent for the amount and the quality of the food. I HIGHLY recommend that you have dessert-- don't be fooled by the plain descriptions of the chocolate cake or the cheesecake. They are phenomenal. The chocolate cake is more of a chocolate souffle with the texture of a molten chocolate cake.
It's definitely an upscale setting with great service. It would impress a date or an important client.
One small thing I noticed is that we were among the younger people there-- both in our early 30s. Not a big deal, but we did chuckle about it."
