"If you like spicy food you have to try Opera. The Kung Poa Chicken was so spicy that I need a nice sorbet to cool me down for dessert. I highly recommend the Crab Cakes for an appetizer they are served on a hawiaan bun which is the perfect compliment to the crab cakes. The atmosphere had a swanky, modern look to it. I look forward to continuing to dine at all the KDK restaurants."

"Delicious. Watch out for the 'Firecracker Chicken' it is HOT! We sat in one of the vaults - private, romantic, dark and warm. The service was a bit heavy with "excellent choice sir". Say it once and it is affirming, say it 5 times and it comes off as mocking."

"Although it's my friends favorite restaurant, I think the food is just good. Nothing spectacular. Also I found the food to be salty. I had the 5-spice ribs as an appetizer, which was delish, but dry. My friend had the chicken and lettuce. The chicken was like eating salt. For my entree I had the Kung Pao Beef, which I requested mild with a kick and that's exactly what I got. The heat was perfectly done, but again it was salty. The upside down pineapple cake was delish. Would I go back to Opera? Why not? I would run back there. No. Our waiter was a bit bossy, but I really liked how he asked about food allergies, dislikes from the get-go. I think all restaurants should do this and really listen to the diner."

"I did not have a good experience at this restaurant. As a vegan, I called ahead and was told that anything on the vegetarian menu could be made vegan -- a complete lie. Mostly everything had egg in it or was super spicy, so I ended up with an eggplant quinoa dish that looked a lot better than it tasted. The food was bland, as 3 of my non-veg dining companions agreed (they had orange chicken and "duck three ways"). The service was slow and our waiter practically ignored us. We had to keep asking for refills, which we sent back multiple times because the soda was flat. Overall, the ambience was nice and the food was presented beautifully but it did not live up to the hype. I would not dine at Opera again."

"Food: Fair
- an upscale panda express, food is drenched in overwhelming sauces. Before long, the firecracker chicken tastes like the kung pao beef. There is simply no flavor control.
- Decent value and portion size.

Ambiance: Good
- good lighting and decor. Perhaps too eccentric for some, but good for a casual outing.

Service: Poor
- server exuded disdain when we refused to order drinks an appetizer. Dessert menu was forced upon us. Overall poor service quality for an upscale restaurant like this.
- Menu felt cheap and lacked clarity.

Final Notes:
- Presentation and ambiance may save this restaurant, but the menu needs an overhaul, and they gotta fix the food."

"Went to Opera for my birthday dinner and it was great. Unique menu choices, tasty food, excellent service. The server assured me that the chef is working on an expanded vegan menu... so I will be back when that comes out! "The ood quality was terrible and way over priced. We ordered 5 apps and 4 entrees, with only one exception, the Roti Prata app, the food was tasteless. Service was slow and a bit arrogant, will honestly never go back or refer anyone to Opera. Why would a restaurant take a great fish like Sea Bass, roll it in batter with skin on and depp fry it?"

"My wife and I ordered and shared several dishes. This was easily some of the best food I have ever eaten. The flavors are incredible. I am a new vegetarian and didn't miss meat one bit. I also appreciated the separate vegetarian section of the menu. Our server knew not only what was in each dish, he listed for us the ingredients (down to the spices) of every single item he brought out. We will definitely go back!"

"Not the restaurant if you are looking for a great steak dinner but I would highly recommend the scallops and brown rice risotto. Both meals ordered for the evening were small by any restaurant portion standard and no, we are not the type that patronizes the all-you-can-eat buffets. The service with (Matt) as exceptional. We would encourage anyone to ask for one of their private, secluded, booths for a wonderful,romantic experience. I would give Opera a 4 star / out of 5 star rating due to the small portions compared to overall costs. We ate there on a Thursday in March 2010 and Opera was not too busy."

"The new chef has a long way to go to solidify the new menu. My eggplant quinoa was good, but the sauces competed with each other and didn't fit with the entree. My friend had the sea bass, and found it to be dry and tasteless. They were out of the wine we ordered, and refused to offer the more expensive bottle of the same varietal for the price of the wine they were out of (every other restaurant I've been to does this). The server was pleasant, but rather condescending. I had been several times before and very much enjoyed my experience, but with all of the other choices in Chicago, I don't think I'll be going back."

"Very nice decore yu can sit in little vaults (former film vaults) or tables in the dining room. It was not crowded at all. They were out of the 3 things we ordered. We picked others but although they saied it was not spicy, it was. Only the steak was done as we asked. I am not sure I would go again. Also the waitress seemed bothered when we asked too many questions althoug they were not busy at all. Part of the problem is that they had a lot of shelfish items which we do not eat, limiting our choices. But the fish, duck, and chicken were out."

"We began with a plate of vegetable spring rolls which were, quite literally, saturated in grease and inedible. When I mentioned how greasy they were, our server merely replied, "Yeah, well, they're fried." He did not offer to have the kitchen make a new batch, nor any other consolation. I was not pleased. The rest of the meal was very good: crispy orange beef, Chinese five-spice ribs (fabulous!), sauteed spinach, and pad see ew. I'm not sure if we'll return, but overall, the experience was worth the trip to the South Loop."

"Fun, energetic atmosphere with interesting decor. Disappointingly, the food was underwhelming. Mussels were perfectly cooked, sauce was flavorful, but too greasy. Vietnamese chicken lacked flavor. Scallops were overly salted, and risotto too creamy. The worst was vanilla mint creme brulee...worst creme brulee I've ever had. The sugar coating was too thick, filling was slightly undercooked, and the flavor reminded me of toothpaste.

I wanted to love this place because of ample parking & close proximity to our home, but we most likely will never return."

"food was great i will go back as they have tempura green beans which are my favorite. I also loved the crabcake sliders. Server was good too. I think had he not had a completely full section the service would have been outstanding. Also I gave the ambiance only 3 start only because it's sort of bright where we sat near the open kitchen and we could hear the person calling all the food orders, it's quite loud. However the decor is really cool. I will go back for sure!"

"Amazing food! The beef and broccoli is one of the best meals I have ever had. It is a New York strip with an Asian flair and the sauce is to die for. The orange chicken (orange beef on the menu but you can ask for chicken instead) was light and crispy with just enough orange flavor.
Service was good. We made a reservation on a Saturday night and were brought to our table almost immediately. The food came out very quickly and we didn't feel rushed.
Definitely ask for a "vault" table. They are intimate booths tucked away in old film vaults draped in velvet curtains that are luxurious and absorb sound.
This is a great place for a date, or sit in the general dining area for great food and eclectic atmosphere."

"My boyfriend and I chose Opera for our Valentine's Day dinner. We were somewhat dissappointed as the menu given to us, which was just okay nothing very special, seemed not to be the same menu as posted on-line, which is why we chose this restaurant in the first place. Also, our waiter only checked on us once during our meal and then only reappeared to process the check, which was a shame because we had wanted to possibly try another dish with his assistance and order another round of drinks but felt frustrated and therefore chose to go elsewhere for a night cap. All in all nice atomsphere but I would probably choose to go back for lunch only."

"Opera was very refreshing. I truly enjoyed the food, spirits and service. What really stood out to me was the organization of how organized the restaurant is. "Extremely disappointing. The food was absolutely terrible and the service was mediocre at best. We tried a fried shrimp appetizer from the Friday "special app & cocktail" menu and the sauce simply tasted like mayonnaise-if it was supposed to be an aoli, something went terribly wrong because it tasted like someone just dipped the shrimp in mayo. We also has several small plates; the noodles with peanut sauce which was ONLY tasted like peanut butter with not even a hint of anything else; the lobster spring rolls were burnt the first time, and when the replacement came out it was also burnt-it is ridiculous to have to send the same thing back twice. My husband and I love great food and wine and this place has neither. I'll have Chinese takeout"

"The appetizers and dessert we ordered were amazing! The main courses were presented nicely but lacked flavor. "This is a great place that was wonderful for a business lunch. Not crowded, not noisy, great service, easy to get to by cab, very interesting asian based menu. The person I was dining with needed a gluten free item and our waiter was terrific. "This is a fantastic Chinese restaurant (with some fusion aspects, admittedly). In the last two weeks we have ordered carry out as well as eaten in the restaurant. The tables range from the larger room, to a cafe area near the windows, to intimate booths that are rationed out first come first served. The food tends to be a bit more adventuresome than the typical orange chicken/kung pao chicken/sweet and sour shrimp dish that you might find elsewhere. That being said, there is something for everyone on the menu, including some nifty preparations for more sophisticated palates."

"Our party of 6 all agreed we should've gone to Carnivale (one of our favorite places) instead. Our waitress, Jessica, was rude and the incident with her was completely avoidable. "The service just like Park 52 needs improvement. After informing our waiter, that we were going to the theater, the food arrived with just enough time to gulp it down. We only had 15 minutes to eat dessert and my coffee was never delivered but on the bill. I had to alert the waiter to this. "The service was absoultely out of this world. I've been here a few times and never had reason to note the service before, but our waiter was just fantastic. I wasn't as impressed with the food as I have been in the past, namely the chipotle corn under my scallops. The corn was still crunchy and a little unappetizing and I hardly tasted any chipotle. The firecracker shrimp were amazing as usual. I should have just ordered round 2 for my dinner. The wine was also great, we got a Pinot Noir from Oregon and it was perfectly light and a great match with our food. We'll be back."

"I've been to this restaurant numerous times and every time except this time, I would have rated everything "Outstanding". However, I was slightly disappointed by my food on this visit. We ordered the Hainanese Style Kaipong (which I've had many times) and the lotus leaf was kind of burnt and dried out so when the server cut into it, little pieces of the leaf splintered and got all over the food. When I made a comment about it, the server said something lame like "well, it's roasted". Sorry, but I don't want crispy bits of burnt leaf all over my food. Also the sauce on the Kung Pao Tofu was way too strong/concentrated and salty. Even with rice it was difficult to eat. The Golden Corn Soong and Tempura Green Beans were delicious, though."

"We were a party of 3 arriving very early on New Year's Eve and were not expecting anything out of the ordinary except for a special New Year's Eve menu. However, there was a 70's theme with disco music and the wait staff was dressed very showy and flamboyantly. They also had a fog machine to add to the lively atmosphere. "We had been to this restaurant many times in past and we loved it. When we came back after not going there for a year or more, we were disappointed with the changes to the menu and the quality of the food. The ambiance and service were still very good. In the past, the emphasis seemed to be on 'Asian fusion.' Now it seemed more like a straight up Chinese restaurant. The flavors had been more delicate and the presentation sparer and 'cleaner.' Now the portions were huge and flavors (and sauces) frankly overpowering. The problem is in the kitchen (perhaps it was a new cook that night.) Others in our party seemed pleased, but we had higher expectations based on the past."

"The atmosphere is great, the food is very good but the service is a real clunker. The host forgot 10 minutes after I requested to be seated in the vault to seat me there. Our waiter was nothing short of in your face annoying. The only bespoke service at our table was our food runner. "The pre-fixed menu every Sunday and Tuesday is an awesome deal! Not only do you get an appetizer and entree but also desert for only $28.99. I brought my boyfriend's parents, and they enjoyed every bite of each course! The serving was more than enough. The food was served warm. "My husband and I took my Mother and Father to dinner to celebrate my Mother's birthday. The food was yummy. My Mother and I ordered the Filet special. We both agreed the flavor of the side of onion mash (not sure of the proper name) was overpowering. We ordered the ahi tuna spring rolls and were disappointed with those. The small salad on the side of the plate was the best part of the starter. They were very flavorless and cooked. Out of all the food we ordered those were the 2 things that we were disappointed with. All of our other food was so tasty!
Everyone who greeted us at the Host table Michael and another young lady were very pleasant. Our server Andrea was very personable and thorough!
We cant wait to go back."

"My guest and I enjoyed a table in the "vault," a secluded space for private dining. We were delighted by the attentive and helpful service. My guest, who is vegetarian, was impressed by the large variety of options (about half of the menu) and just LOVED her dishes. We both got spring-rolls (mine with Lobster and hers vegetarian) and they tasted nearly identical. The entres were delicious; however the presentations could have been more creative."

"My wife and I live close to Opera and have frequented the restaurant for over 3 years. The level of food quality has continuted to decline with every visit and it feels like they are cutting corners with the quality of food they buy. Unfortunately, we do not plan to visit Opera again."
