Don't be fooled by the crowds and the noise; they are all part of the scene here at Laguna Beach's sexy and intense 230 Forest Avenue. The lean deep room seduces you to the open kitchen, bustling bar, and concrete floors, creating a space that is part modern bistro, part martini bar, and part art gallery. It's the perfect spot to see and be seen, laid back Laguna-style. Executive Chef Marc Cohen is consistently recognized as one of The OC's top chefs. You'll be ready to award him a medal, too, after tasting his flashy-to-the-eye, tickle-the-taste buds fusion appetizers and entrees. His dishes are often so stunning that they compete with the artwork on the walls, making for a thoroughly satisfying "artistic" experience.
"Excellent food. Had to wait 20 minutes for our reserved time, but once seated service was good. We were happy to have one of the tables near the outside because it was very loud inside. Food was delicious!"

"I ordered my steak medium rare. first came out medium so I sent it back. The manager (I believe) came out with no apology and a demeanor and tone which made me feel uncomfortable and delivered my new steak rare. The manager came at me with a tone questioning exactly how I wanted my steak; telling me the first steak was their medium rare. This is the only restaurant I've ever been to that would consider what I saw medium rare. I sent my steak back again and it came back rare again--cold in the center. Management never came back. Our waiter Jorge did a great job handling the situation, as his boss hung him out to dry. wife's scallops were nicely cooked. So, we are torn. Had the manager handled the matter better, we would maybe try again."

"We had a high school reunion and from the hostess to the great meal everything was perfect. We all ordered special cocktails since 230 has a gifted mixologist: a Ruby something with grapefruit, pomegranate, and vodka; another mix with basil that was interesting; and, a regular Ketel One vodka martini. We then had the calamari appetizer that was lightly breaded and very good. However, the salmon nicoise that I ordered as an entrée was even better. Salmon cooked perfectly and still moist with an olive tapenade sauce, slivered new potatoes, French green beans, and more. Everyone argued over who had the best meal. Sit outside when you can since it can get noisy inside."

"We sat on the patio which I think was a much better option for conversing. The restaurant/bar area was a bit noisy. The food was excellent and I enjoyed the salmon while my date had the halibut; both very good. Wine list was decent.
Our waiter was o.k. I wasn't a huge fan of his table side manner but the worst part was that he took away our plates without asking if we were even finished; we still had food on our plates (we were not finished yet)
The atmosphere was not warm and inviting though the food was good."

"Hot spot in Laguna. Noise and crowded but a bit better on the front patio Wonderful, knowledgable waiter. Excellent food. We had the hazelnut encrusted halibut that was delish opus, moist and flavorful. And the day boat scallops of a bed of some amazing risotto. - superb."

"Had the braised short ribs and the halibut. Both were excellent! Service was great. Seating was kind of tight but the food more than made up for that minor issue. Would definitely go back to try some more menu items."

"Once or twice a year we travel to Laguna Beach to visit the local art galleries. We always will find something we "can't live without." We also can not go to Laguna Beach without having lunch or dinner at 230 Forest. This trip we enjoyed a very pleasant and satisfying lunch. Food is exceptional, service is attentive and efficient and the surroundings are always great in Laguna Beach."

"From start to finish, everything was terrific. Hostess immediately seated us,and our server promptly greeted us. The oysters on the half shell, plus the warm arugula salad were the bomb! We had two different halibut dishes that were mouth watering good! We were surprised with a complimentary dessert ( croissant bread pudding) because we were celebrating our Anniversary. It is a small restaurant, so tables are very close to one another. It was a great time, and I highly recommend this restaurant."

"Everything we had was delicious: Prosciutto wrapped grilled prawns, crusted halibut and the Cioppino. Delicious and still steaming when it came to the table. Service was hectic- it's a very busy place- and our table was i the middle of the room, so lots of bodies going back and forth, people bumping in to the backs of our chairs. Plentiful portions for the price, great wine list. We were very pleased."

"230 Forest Avenue is the exception to the usual Laguna Beach restaurant categories - it is neither over-priced foodie haven or over-priced tourist hole. Good service from start to finish, good and interesting food from start to finish, lunch all told averaged $20 a person. We split appetizers: chicken meatballs (served on a sliver of ginger atop a slice of cucumber) and beet salad on arugula with a little cup of brie "brulee." Also had half a nice fresh field green salad with teriyaki'd chicken breast; delicious pulled pork sandwich with fresh coleslaw and a fragrant round brown bun. A great spot for a great day trip if you live in So. Cal. or if you are driving the PCH and want a rest break that won't break the bank."

"Went for my birthday with several friends and had a great meal. We had the special rock shrimp and the fried calamari as starters and we all agreed the shrimp was exceptionally good. I enjoyed the perfectly cooked barramundi with hummus for my entree and would order it again. Others enjoyed the halibut, salmon, and the huge pork chop. Everyone left happy!"

"We waited about 35 minutes to be seated after our reservation time. They did comp an appetizer for the inconvenience. The bar is small, so there is no place to wait except on the street. The tables are packed into tight spaces so it is a bit crowded feeling. Service and food are very good. Overall, it is fun, vibrant place, not a quiet and romantic one. Parking can be a serious issue."

"Based on my first and only experience, I would not recommend this restaurant. The food was fine, the service was fine, but the tables are packed in so tightly that it is not conducive to having any type of conversation, let alone, special event there. Perhaps if you are a really early eater and most of the tables have not filled in, then, it might be a good spot for eating."

"Was in town celebrating a birthday without much of a plan. 230 Forrest was decided on the day before. Walking distance from our hotel. Service was good, atmosphere better than average, but the food was outstanding! We can't wait for our next trip to Laguna. 230 in definitely on the return to list."

"I really hate being cramped into a table for two where you are just about sitting on top of the table next to you. All the tables that are along the wall that are more intimate, are tables for 4. There are very few tables for two where you have any privacy."

"Overall a very nice dinner out with my folks. Two of us had the scallops and one had the cioppino. The scallops were cooked nicely and had good flavor, though just a tad chewy. The cioppino was enjoyed as well. Cocktails very tasty. My only negative is that I think the servings need to be just a little big bigger, or the prices should be a few dollars cheaper. When you spend quite a bit for the meal it would be nice to be more satiated."

"Everything about 230 Forest is awesome! Great looking restaurant, excellent service and everything on the menu is delicious! You cannot have anything but a good time at this great restaurant! This time we had the crispy fish tacos that were full of flavor and so delicious, and the grilled salmon with French fries - prepared perfectly! We can't wait to go back."

"We eat out a great deal and at several place in laguna Beach regularly. We heard good things so decided to try it. The experience was good but not great. The food was very good but the service was not as good as we usually get at this priced restaurant. Not much teamwork. Empty glasses and dirthy plates passed by for 5-10 minutes with may employees standing around close to our table. We were on the aisle. We were not offered additional drinks as if the waiter wanted us to leave. The place is crowded as expected and a bit too cozy with neighbors for us, but I understand the model and that is the expectation. The service will the reason we dont back anytime soon. Better overall experience at others in teh area."
