"For real Garlic lovers, this is the one and only place to satisfy their passion. Enjoyed our early afternoon quiet lunch with my family in an easy going old country atmosphere. Waiters were very attentive and made us feel as old friends dropping by for a warm stay. I had their delightfully seasoned Cioppino which had an array of seafood; my husband had their seafood pasta and my son had the Stinking version of the well known Lasagna. For sure Stinking Rose likes to serve food with its garlic!!!"

"The front desk accomodated our early arrival and allowed us to sit in a booth that we had requested while we awaited the arrival of the rest of our party. The waiter was curteous and prompt. The atmosphere was perfect for my friends from Boston as they requested a casual dining atmosphere. I can only speak for the Lamb shanks, so if you like a meat and potato dish it will satisfy that desire. The price was moderate. Location great - right next to City lights and across the street fro Tosca, where we capped the evening off with drinks."

"Maybe we didn't order the best one spaghetti , it taste too dry for me! We also ordered the shrimp and crab iron combo, shrimps are really tasty, crab is so so I think. and I really hope staffs would told us we ordered too much cause we only have 2 people, we've never dining here before , and we also ordered a rabbit! I can barely finish my ice cream!"

"We brought my mum for Mother's Day and all had a wonderful time. Got recommendations from a few people and they were right, it's a wonderful place. The 'Rose has been in this location (between China Town & North Beach) for years and its obvious why. Great food and atmosphere! We had the steamer combo, a hot plate of muscles, prawns, and crab, that with the garlic & bread, and the pizza appetizer fed 4. And a bottle of wine, all for about $25/person. Right around the corner is china town & just down the street is the Embarcadero. We will definitely be back."

"Food is good enough. The service is just fine. The cost is what you'd expect. The deal about this restaurant is that it is a SF icon. Totally fun for tourists and locals alike. If you are looking for a romantic Italian restaurant, you'll want to look elsewhere. This restaurant is fun and has a lot of character."

"I usually do not enjoying eating garlic, but until I tried Bagna! It didn't have that usual garlic taste to it, but I really enjoyed eating it and dipping my bread with it. I also really liked the menu design, different and unique. Tad bit on the expensive side, but somewhere you should try in San Francisco."

"I've ordered short ribs in the past although its been quite a while, back then the ribs were meaty and the meat just melted in your mouth. The garlic flavor pour through, oh so YUM! This visit it was such a disappointment, we both ordered the short ribs unfortunately, they were on the dry side and not much meat on the bones."

"If you are a garlic lover, this is the perfect restaurant for you!. There is a great array of garlic infused appetizers and entrees. And so my husband and I stunk it up together- it was fabulous, tasty, zesty and flavorful. We would defiitely return on another visit to San Francisco."

"I had excellent table service and the food was very tasty. The boneless ribs were very tender, and the garlic was not as overpowering as I was expecting. Everyone enjoyed the food and experimented with the different garlic dishes.

The atmosphere was very interesting and nostalgic. I enjoyed looking at all of the old movie and tv star pictures everywhere.

I would recommend this to my friends, but you really need to enjoy garlic."

"This was a restaurant that we for sure wanted to go to since we love garlic. Was a bit intimidated from looking at the restaurant online because some of the decor seemed a bit cheesy. But when we were seated, we were brought to a semi-private booth. It was nice. Our server was polite, told us about the raw garlic/parsley concoction that was sitting on our table top. They quickly brought bread to us, and were given adequate time to peruse the menu. The food was good and we were quite hungry. We actually came here to celebrate a birthday, and the staff showed up to sing and brought a little chocolate cake. We also tried the much boasted about Gilroy garlic ice cream. It is a must try. All in all an enjoyable experience with great food."

"It's been a long time since I've been to The Stinking Rose and back then it was hard to get in to. I took a friend there for dinner who was visiting thinking it would be a great institution. I was disappointed in how empty it was and yet how hurried we were to order and eat. The food was just OK. I changed my order before the waiter left the row of tables and got attitude. I think maybe this is an institution that is way past it's prime."

"An overall good experience the only thing that lacked was the service from our actual server. The bus boy and food runner were great but we only saw our server twice, did not check on food eyc but we did not have any complaints. Also the service was very fast, 3 courses in less than an hour, there was no gap between starter and main courses which we did not like but as we found with 90% of the places we had eaten on our trip this seems to be the norm now in the USA.
Would highly recommend but be prepared to smell garlic for a couple of days!"

"We had a short list of restaurants to visit on our short trip to the bay area. The stinking rose was on it.

Loved the ambience. Good place as a touristy destination (I guess).
The food was disappointing. We started with a margarita pizza and beer. Not a lot of choice as far beer was concerned (only 3) and the pizza was nothing special. We then ordered salmon and the 40 garlic clove chicken. Salmon was over cooked and the chicken had no flavor. Overall it was an unimpressive experience."

"The ambiance and service were better than the food. The bagna calda was great, but the bread it came with was just mediocre. I shared a garlic crab dish with a friend, and it was rather disappointing. The crab was already cut up, and very, very dry. Dungeness crab is one of the more flavorful crabs in my opinion, and this was just eh. That being said the the orther people in the group lopved their lamb and steak. Could have just been my dish, thought it was highly recommended to me."

"I was told of this historic restauraunt by a friend, who suggested I eat there next time on business travel. Excellent food, fun place to dine. Service was fast and flawless. Had some wonderful garlic roasted dungeness crab and a really spectacular gnochi dish. You have to like garlic, and if you do this is tops!"

"I enjoyed the garlic and bread rolls served before dinner but dinner was not very good for the price. The baby back ribs that I ordered were not very appetizing. They looked and tasted like left over food prepared and cooked the day before. And the meat loaf was nothing spectacular. For the price and the quality of the food I won't be returning anytime soon."

"I was disappointed. The food and service were only OK. The prime rib was good, but the appetizer was cold and the rolls were a bit stale. The place was very busy and it took quite awhile to be waited on. While being a very unique restaurant, I was not overly pleased. I would not recommend it expect for it's unusual claim to fame - garlic."

"I haven't been to the Stinking Rose in 12 years. I had very fond memories of fantastic food, excellent service and just an over-all good time, and couldn't wait to go back. I was very happy that the food is still incredible (especially the Bagna Calda and the 40 clove roasted garlic chicken. The ambiance was still charming, but I was very disappointed in the service. Our server disappeared for over 40 minutes, so that meant no refills, and since we were on a schedule, we missed the start time of our next activity. We were going to order dessert but didn't have time."

"Located in Little Italy this gem has been around for years. This is a favorite of my wife and I. Italian cuisine that specializes in several sea food items. The ambiance is cozy and even romantic. Really there is something for everyone here. There is an area for groups to spread out and we have heard Happy Birthday sung just about every time we have gone. This really is an old school San Francisco treat and shouldn't be missed."

"I had an 8:15 reservation, arrived at 8:10 and was asked to wait for 30 minutes, almost, before getting our table. The food is decent and the restaurant is basically a tourist stop. The service was excellent, though."

"I was a bit dissapointed by the Stinking Rose, the food was good but not outstanding. My appitizer arrived before my wine, and I felt quite rushed by our waiter. All he seeemed to care about was turing the table. It was a good experiance but i think the stinking rose is turing into a chain type restaurant, where the food is good but nothing out of the ordinary."

"GARLIC!! Everything had a really great flavor and was cooked perfectly. I wish my stomach could hold more food. Here's what we ordered:

Garlic in a tub of butter-this was a great spread for the awesome bread they give. Wonderful appetizer!
Clams-a wonderful broth accompanied the clams. Good thing we ordered a large!
Shrimp and mussels on the grill-oh... such yummy shrimp and mussels! The only thing that would have made it better is if the shrimp were pre-peeled.
Steak and crab-steak was cooked perfectly, was tender, moist and delicious
Pasta and clams-great taste! Lots of clams!!
Lotsa crab-all legs no bodies, hmmm, I wonder why the menu says whole crabs? I love the bodies! Good flavor, though, not too salty."

"Food was great. Ambience not good for a romantic meal. I made my reservation online, advised it was our 10 year wedding anniversary and requested a cozy table in the back with the curtains. Was seated upstairs, against a wall, slanted floor, near dish station with tables of 6-8 guests around us. Noisy! Disappointed in the attention to special requests and needless to say it was not the anniversary dinner I wanted."

"This is such a fun restaurant! We arrived early (5:45PM) on a Fri so the noise level was still reasonable---+ we sat in a front room. We always enjoy the 40 clove garlic chicken---still great. Wine selection good too. Terrific place to bring out-of-towners for a real SF treat!"

"Great food and great atmosphere makes The Stinking Rose one of my favorite touristy places to take my friends when they come visit me in San Francisco. The food is always great and the portions are generous. If you're a garlic fan, this is a great place to go once in a while, though, maybe not on a first or second date!"
