Old Homestead Restaurant
Classic Gotham Steakhouse located in the ultra chic Meat Packing District, established in 1868. The restaurant maintains it's strong relationships with their butchers, allowing them to get their first pick of beef. Nothing but prime dry aged meat - always has been and always will be. Winner of the 2006 Wine Spectator Award. Lobsters ranging in sizes from 4 - 13 lbs., sushi grade tuna, sockeye salmon, Colossal crab meat and shrimp so big they are referred to as small bananas.

"I love the old school atmosphere of the Old Homestead. It's one of the better, older landmarks left in such a new, upcoming area (Meatpacking District). We were so glad they had a colossal crab cake and clams on the half shell as appetizers. It's always a good start to a steak-driven meal! Mine and my boyfriend's steaks were cooked just the way we like it (medium rare) and paired with the perfect potato cake as a side. We finished our meal off with their New York styled cheesecake which was delicious! It was an overall great experience and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone!"

"The Old Homestead Restaurant was recommended and so I went with a colleague visiting from abroad. The food was ok, nothing to rave about but the service was simply terrible. Not attentive, rushed, quite rude. When we asked for recommendations for sides and wine we were advised to read the menu. I will not return and cannot recommend this place. At all."

"My boyfriend picked this place for his birthday, which was a great choice. It was very comfortable and relaxing after a hard day of work. The servers were right on time with all of our needs.I would definitely return to try more dishes. I would recommend this restaurant to everybody."

"While the food was very good, everything else here was just OK. We wanted Prime Rib before the Knicks game and not many restaurants still serve Prime Rib during the week. We were given a small table even though we told the restaurant we would be in and out quickly. The table was not big enough for our dinners and side dishes. We told the waiter and manager the table was too small. When we were halfway through our main course, the manager asked if we wanted to change tables. Unfortunatley too little to late."

"The staff brought out the food almost COLD ! i ordered the Japanese Kobe beef and my husband ordered aTbone Steak both came almost cold! The french fries were completly cold ! When the manager came to our table and we told him our issue , he was super snob ! ..that's how a customer that spent 650 us gets treated over there! . They need to learn that the client is always right! this place is absolutly not worth its reputation ! And less its price ! I would never recommend it to anybody !"

"Absolutely horrible service would never go back. Had a reservation for 8:30 on Saturday, walked in and check in at 8:25, the hostess said it would be about 10 minutes while they prepared our table which was not a problem. 10 minutes turned into over 1 hr to wait for a reservation for 8:30. Excuses "they paid we are just waiting for them to leave" and "they're paying the bill now". In the mean time they sat two tables for two whom walked in after us and a table of 4 that literally opened the door and sat down. That was the last straw, when we asked the manager about that he said that's different he's the owner. He said just wait we will take care of you, unacceptable! at that point our party left and went to Wolfgang's which was excellent."

"I've eaten here on several occasions and leave impressed everytime. This is easily one of the top steakhouses in NYC. The only complaint I have is that it took 45 minutes for us to be seated despite having made reservations well in advance. Based on the number of people waiting in the very narrow corridor/bar area, it seemed as if they overbook purposely. Great experience otherwise."

"Had the special of three sliders, caesar salad and tater tots. I have had dinner here before and wanted to try these for brunch. Cute idea but disappointing. Perhaps they could just offer one larger burger that would be large enough to be cooked medium. As it is, all three were bland, overcooked and tough. Salad was ok as were the tater tots, and you do get a glass of beer or wine. But curiously, whatever meat one orders here, it seems to be tasteless. This is a shame since the service was outstanding with a very friendly professional cadre of waiters and hosts."

"We were looking for a replacement to Ben Bensons. Unfortunately we didn't find it here. (We may never find a replacement) The food is very good, however, & I would recommend Old Homestead to everyone reading this review.
We had reservations at 9:30 PM & the place was packed with people. Got seated about 9:50. Not bad. Had a very good experience & our waitress was pleasant & accommodating. Was shocked to see a sonoma county wine on the list. It was fantastic with our steaks.
It's not Ben Bensons but it is very good. Recommended"

I have had better steaks at much less expensive restaurants and was very disappointed. We went to celebrate our birthdays and I have always had amazing meals at Homestead. "Not worth the price - a spot for tourists and those with expense accounts. Filet Mignon was not bad but not worth the $39 price tag. I have had better. And our server brought out the most expensive burger (the Kobe Burger) when we ordered the "Filet Mignon" burger, which was ten dollars cheaper. It still appeared on our check even after we had pointed out the mistake. And even with the high price, my friend's burger was overcooked.
I was very disappointed. This was to be a lunch to celebrate my recovery from a tough cancer. I wish I picked another place. Well, at least I have time now (hopefully) to go somewhere else."

"I have reservation by open table. I have also put for our "Anniversary" Once we approach the host counter it took a while for them to found our reservation. it might be more than 5 min since we sat down till the server come to our table, no introduce himself just rush us to order drink, and we have no idea what kind of drink do they have, and server not even offer if i want to see wine list.(i have to ask for it). The only thing that impress us is Food. I order 2lb lobster which perfectly cook and very fresh, my husband and my brother order bone-in ribeye which also cook as their desire, by the time we finish main course the server not even try to sell us desert, i have to ask for menu and order 'key lime pie' for share. which is just okay"

"My brother was visiting from the UK and he said he wanted a good steak so I picked Old Homestead because I had heard good things and we were going to be in the meatpacking district. The ambiance was great and the service was what we expected but the steak I ordered was horrible. It was literally rank and tasted like it had spoiled prior to cooking. I am assuming that they do some dry aging of the steaks and that the one I was served was not monitored closely enough. The fact that a spoiled piece of meat made it out of the walk-in, onto the grill, onto a plate and ultimately to me is troublesome to say the least. I may go back to give them a second chance but it's not likely..."

"This was my second visit to the old homestead. Truthfully do not remember the first, but I can tell you that my second was miserable. The worst ribeye I have ever had! I couldn't cut a single piece of meat fromnt that didn't have globs of fat on it. I managed to eat approximately 1/4 of it before I completely have up. A friend actually complained on my behalf. But the waiter them came over and said that he thought the steak looked good to him!?? My worst experience in a steakhouse ever!"

"I've long been a huge fan of The Old Homestead for dinner as their steaks are hard to beat in NYC. However, this was a lunch visit and the service was mediocre and even the not inexpensive kobe burger was far less tasty than I had anticipated. Naturally, there's nothing *bad* about dining at a nice restaurant like this, but when you're paying a premium for lunch, your expectations go up a bit. The three-burger (small) combo for lunch with a beer and a salad is a nice option that I did not avail myself of."

"I was in New York with my brother for the Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival and my brothers 50th birthday. I wanted to take my brother for a special meal and decided on the Old Homestead Restaurant I have to say it has been a long time since I had a great steak like the one I ate. "What was I thinking. Should have stuck with the Strip House and Uncle Jacks. Appetizer of oysters and shrimp was very good as was the creamed spinach, but the Porterhouse for two with a lobster tail was horrible. Tasteless, poor presentation and the tail was just thrown on top of the steak. Never again. In a city like NY, this restaurant should not even be an option for true steak lovers!"

"We've always wanted to come here because it's reputed to be one of NY's premier steakhouses. We were not disappointed. Although all things considered I think I preferred the porterhouse for two at some of its peers, we really enjoyed the taste of the meat, which was cooked precisely as we ordered it (black and blue). The sliced bacon was great, as was the lump crabmeat appetizer. The tables for two upstairs are close to one another, so you may wind up making friends with your neighbors, but for those of you that enjoy intimacy, you can keep to yourself if you want to."

"The worst service that Ive ever had at any retaraunt inmy life. Will not ever go back and will reccomend to everyone that I know to never go there. I'm pretty sure the waiter was high as a kite. The manager wasn't much better. The food was average at best."

"The 22 oz. Gotham Rib steak was cooked really well! I had the hand cut french fries and the string beans with carmelized onions and pancetta, all were yummy! My starter, oysters rockefeller was delicious but the rock salt sprinkled around the plate could prove treacherous for the unsuspecting diner. The table was roomy enough for three of us but my husband's steak was sent back because he asked for medium well and got my medium. He sent it back, they were gracious and brought it back with an extra side of mashed potatoes. So, try it, it's fun. If you like it, recommend it."

"Overall food was great, they were out of the prime rib. The noise was loud this is definitely not a romantic spot for 2. I would say this a great special occassion restaurant for big groups. I had the filet and it was great. If you are a carnivore this is a great place. We also had the mashed potatoes and they too were great. The service was a bit slow with water refills and someone picked up my sons coke and never asked if he wanted another (no free refills). Overall we would go back.
I also made an 8:30 reservation on Open Table we didn't get seated until 8:50. I think they are double booking which makes it inconvenient for us, the customer. I was disappointed with us having to wait, had it been like 5 minutes no big deal."

"This was my second time there and I have not been disappointed. I had the Kobe Burger and it was amazing. The tater tots were the best I have ever had. Great wine selection and they make excellent drinks. Will absolutely come back again for more deliciousness!"

"This was my first "taste" of The Old Homestead.We had reservations for noon. We were the onlyones in there so we sat immediately. It was cleanand pleasant. Furnished with wood accents whitetablecloths and linens. Wait staff was in black andwhite.We started with a glass of Shiraz. Server wasfriendly and professional. My husband had the filet wrapped in baconand I had the sliders. We each had the onionsoup, best I ever had!All in all a delightful experience."

"The steak simply did not compare to the other top NYC steakhouses in the city. Sides and appetizers were all very good but could not compensate. Additionally, while we did not want bread, the fact they charge for the delicious bread you enjoy at a steakhouse is a little crazy."
