Maize Restaurant of Newark
Maize is located on the ground level of the Best Western Robert Treat Hotel. Besides having a laid back atmosphere and serving sumptuous dishes, Maize is decorated in such a way that it can handle any function. A legendary owner and a celebrated Chef ensure an irresistible unique Cuisine. Fresh herbs are produced by a model community-service project that tells the story of revival and hope.
Serving lunch, and dinner, Maize has an elaborate tea menu and extensive wine list, and is open seven days a week. Maize, owned by Livingston, New Jersey resident Wilson De Sousa, has received a rating of "Very Good" from The New York Times and "Three Stars" from The Star-Ledger. Maize has been a filming location for the popular HBO series The Sopranos, and has been featured on NBC's Weekend Today in New York.

"Overall, the experience was very good. The food was uneven. Flank Steak was tough, but we did ask for it to be cooked Med/Well. Suggest Med at most. Mixed Green salads were very good. Apple tart for desert was OK.
Overall, it is a great place for pre-show dinner at the NJPAC."

"Stopped here for dinner - made reservations which was good because the restaurant was full on Friday night with a show at the NJPAC. We've eaten at Maize before and looked forward to returning. The food is excellent as is the service."

"We arrived promptly at 6 for our reservation. Our hostess seemed confused and asked my name 3 times. She finally took us to our table and while seating us knocked over several glasses with menus.We waited 20 minutes while no one ever came toys. We told 2 different bus boys to please get our waiters attention to no avail.We left with out eating or ever being greeted.What foos I did see, looked mediocre.Skip it."

"The food was basic - nothing special but bordering on bad. The service was horrific. We will never dine there again or recommend it to anyone. Our waiter was exteremly slow and only came to our table three times - to take our drink order, to give us our drinks and to take our dinner order. It took 45 mintues for our food to come out and we all ordered seafood - which is the quickest food to make!"

"We chose Maize because it was across the street from NJPAC. Unfortunately, we had to have our entrees boxed to go! We arrived at 6:30. Our friends at 6:45. We ordered salads and entrees, ate our salads and were waiting for the entrees. Our waiter seemed to have disappeared. At 7:40 we realized we could wait no longer and asked where the food was? Realizing we couldn't possibly eat it and make the show we got out dinners to go. I noticed that other folks who had tickets were having a difficult time getting their checks so that they to could get to the theatre. The lesson learned is get there at 5:30 if you want to make it across the street by 7:45! I'm not sure we will use that lesson."

"I was not impressed. Our table was in a high traffic area and they refused to move us even though there were other tables open. There were no specials on a saturday night. My steak was cooked the way I like it but it was drenched in butter. It came with mashed potato and asparagus. Nothing to write home about. My husband got Paella Marinara. The seafood was good but the rice was a simple pilaf which shocked me since I heard that their Spanish/Portuguese food was very good. They brought our check without asking if we wanted coffee or desert. We ordered apple tartini and flourless chocolate cake. Both were mediocre. The apple tart tasted like a pre-made frozen dessert. I wont go back there again."

"We were seated with our on-time arrival. From there, everything was a bit slow. The wine list was poor. Not a lot of choices, and if you are into good wines, don't go here. Appetizers came out together and were very good. However the entrees came out staggered, about 5 minutes apart, so one of the plates just sat there while we waited for the other plate. I was just about to send the first one back when the second arrived. Dessert was good, but the cappuchino I ordered didn't come until dessert was long gone...that was after asking for it 5 times. The waiters would say they were on it, run away, and then not come back. Overall, good food...service...not so much..."

"A friend recommended this delightful, charming restaurant located in the Robert Treat Hotel. Since we were going to NJPAC to hear Tony Bennett perform, its location was perfect. The Portuguese cuisine was tasty and the presentation pleasing.Loved the lemon tart! Paul was extremely attentive and professional. In fact, everyone was helpful and nice. We look forward to returning to Maize!"
