Umami is the new hit restaurant from the Sustainable Restaurants Team (Mamacita). Umami has been developed to highlight great dishes, traditions and drinks from across Asia. While the menu focuses on delicious and true to form Japanese and Vietnamese offerings, you will also find highlights from other countries as well. Umami takes the utmost care in preparation and the ingredients that they use, putting high quality sustainable and organic ingredients and food at the forefront of their offering. Umami has excellent seating for large parties, a private room, bar seating, and great seating for smaller parties as well.
"Umami is by far at the top of my list for Sushi restaurants in San Francisco. I don't think I've ever had something on the menu that I didn't enjoy. The sliders and Poke tacos are a must, and I could eat their Buttercup roll all day long."

"Really loud upstairs! There was a big group in the middle that made the entire room extremely loud, to the point that you could not hear the person opposite you. Food was okay, but sushi rolls were too big and not tightly rolled enough so they fell apart easily. Burger? Now that was good!
But overall...meh...what's all the fuss? Better sushi and creative Japanese food around the city and better ambiance for actually talking to the people you came with at other places."

"We're been twice in the past few months very good meal each time. We're a bit older than the resident demo (late 20's to mid 30's) and it is a very loud place. Lots of hard surfaces so if good food and short conversation is your choice you will love it!"

"Food was pretty good. I feel like you can't really go wrong with rolls as long as the ingredients are fresh and they were. Had the hot sui roll and was pleased. The fried rice and potstickers were mediocre for someone who grew up eating Asian food. Service was pretty good. Restaurant was loud but what you'd expect for something in the Marina. Overall a good experience."

"The restaurant was very accommodating for our large group. The table was ready early and they had no problem with seating us before our entire group arrived. The sushi was inventive, especially the dessert sushi. The bartenders were attentive and cocktails yummy! Nice selection of specialty drinks."

"We arrived for our reservation 5 minutes early and were told that our table wasn't yet ready. The hostess asked us to wait in the bar, which we did, but she quickly ran over to us to tell us that we could NOT sit at one of the bar tables unless we were ordering food. There were no seats at the bar, so we stood and waited, and waited, and waited for 25 minutes for our reserved table! Once we got to our table, my seat on the booth had food on it, and when my date sat down and pulled his chair in he got gum on his hand. It was extremely loud so conversation was difficult. The food was bad, and there were moths flying around our table. We will never go back."

"The restaurant strives to cultivate an after work crowd with discounted small plates and inexpensive drinks, which seems to be working well but takes away from the dining experience. The waitress misunderstood my order of a tempera dish and assumed another sushi roll. Thus all the sushi rolls were brought at once on one plate, and the waitress was done with us. Not the dining experience we were hoping for."

"Food was incredible. Our waitress was friendly, efficient and attentive without being too much. Not a thing we had was the least bit disappointing. Quite the opposite - the food was incredible.Highly recommend the roasted kale for an appetizer, and the strawberries and cream blondie for dessert...everything between is up to you. There is so much to choose from, we'll have to come back."

"Despite the rave reviews, this was overall disappointing. If you happen to be in the neighborhood, late at night, this is a tolerable food option. The sushi is of middling quality, even the daily options were lackluster. Texture suggested a poor cut of fish in a number of cases. Mostly unmemorable. The non-sushi items were slightly better. The best thing we had was the kale salad, it was at least interesting and with a range of flavors. Fresh udon was overcooked, and monotonous, although with great mushrooms hidden throughout. Staff were really nice. Overall, I can't imagine going back."

"We had reservations at 7pm but arrived a little early. Our table was already available so we were seated right away. Our waiter came up immediately to inform us their happy hour ended in a few minutes to encourage us to get our drink order in (half of bottles of wine). Great variety of food, from sushi to steak to seafood. Everything we tired was outstanding! I would highly recommend the ceviche and cod. I will definitely go back and highly recommend to my friends!"

"The food at Umami was superb. I especially liked the Duck Hot Pot.. a real must for first timers. The sliders were also wonderful as well as the Brussels sprout dish. All the food was great. There was a large wine selection. It was a wonderful experience and we will be back."

"We really enjoyed meal; the food was creative and quite tasty. However, when the hostess called to confirm the reservation, I asked her if I needed to allow extra time for parking due to restaurant location. She said, "No, it's always easy to find a spot on the street." This was very misleading and made me late to my dinner. I started my experience on a negative note, which was entirely avoidable. Poor form on the hostess's part!"

"Not as good experience as usual. We were rushed and sushi was not as fresh and as good as usual. On top of that it was very cold on the second floor where we were seated."

"This spot is quickly becoming my favorite choice for Japanese in town. Ambiance is cozy, decoration and lighting create a romantic but somewhat trendy atmosphere, making it suitable for going with your friends or with a date. Food is really good, I'd recommend the edamame hummus(!) and the chef's sashimi plate. The sake selection is pretty wide, and flavor descriptions helps a lot in choosing, if you're not an expert."

"Sumo Hour (5:30-6:30) specials are a good deal. Sushi and rolls are of high quality. The sliders (small burgers) are a highlight. The restaurant is however rather cold and drafty on the lower level."

"The hostess was very friendly and appropriately helpful. In general, I am not a big fan of the waitstaff being overly attentive but then I don't like not being able to find my waitress when I need to order appetizers while I am already waiting for the rest if my group to arrive. When the rest of my group did arrive, however, the waitstaff was perfectly available and super friendly. Great food, great service. I would easily recommend this restaurant to a friend and I am definitely going back."

"One of the best sushi fusion restaurants that I know. Their rolls are out of this world. But you have GOT TOTRY their Kobe sliders.... You will come back again and again. I took a colleague of mine to umami this weeks. It was his first time.... He hasn't stopped talking about it."

"Umami's decor is great, with it's old style country home and the dark natural woods. Food is very imaginitive and tasty, but can does run on the expensive side. It's definitely a special occasion type of restaurant, or a place to stop in for a little bite to eat and drink. A great nigiri sushi and sushi roll menu. We went primarily to try the ramen. Ramen was ok, but the broth was a bit bland and missing something, and the portion was small. All in all, a nice Izakaya."

"Another great meal at the sushi bar at Umami. This has become and remains our favorite sushi place in SF, also near my PacHeights home. We held a party for 14 there last mont and many said it was now their favorite sushi place in SF as well. Good for groups with advance planning, but also excellent at the sushi bar. Daily special sashimi were excellent (shima aji), as was the o toro and hamachi."

"I brought my sister here for her birthday. The reservation was for 8, and the whole restaurant was completely full. We ordered the white fish tataki- delicious. I like my fish on the raw side, so I suggest taking the fish off immediately. We then got the kobe beef tartar, delicious with the taro chips, though I would have been happier with a more runny quail egg yolk. Finally, the suppai roll came. It was amazing. I love shiso, and fuji apple really added to it. Unfortunately the quality of hamachi wasn't up to par, but the sour ume sauce really helped make it a very complex flavor complement. Finally, we got the Vietnamese coffee dessert. It was good, but disappointing that they did not care to recognize that it was her birthday. =("

"Been here many times and this was not a pleasant experience. They wouldn't seat my friend when they opened at 5:30pm because I was 3 minutes late. The place was empty - why not let her sit and get a drink? We were sat at the end of the bar anyways, so it's not like they needed the table - again, they just opened. Server took our order and that was it. Didn't check on us except once to see if we wanted another drink or sushi for happy hour. Felt very rushed to leave the table. Had the service been more friendly & gracious, we would have stuck around for more overpriced drinks. But instead, we left to find another bar where we felt welcomed. Disappointed since I recommend this place to everyone."
