Coal Vines
Coal Vines is a casual neighborhood restaurant that brings a piece of New York City to Kansas City's beautiful Country Club Plaza. As a specialty pizza and wine restaurant, Coal Vines is known for its coal fired oven pizza but is also complemented by a full menu and a wine list that is synonymous with quality, at a reasonable price point. We offer a simple menu of seafood, pastas, appetizers and fresh salads in addition to our New York style pizzas. The casual elegance of the restaurant is enhanced by great music and an energetic dining area. A Sunday Brunch is also offered and has quickly become a favorite brunch spot in Kansas City. The patio and open-air dining make this a popular nice-weather dining restaurant and the candle-lit bar and dining room keep the restaurant cozy during the colder weather. The popular Coal Vines Weekday Winedown (Monday-Friday 3:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m.) offers select glasses of wine for $5.

"The kitchen had ran out of the pasta special of the day when we arrived at 5:30 p.m. We were offered a different pasta that was not whole wheat but we were assured it was good. Yuk! It tasted like it had been made from breakfast sausage. Also, the bruschetta we had was so dry that it nearly turned to powder when you bit into it. On the flip side the wine special of the day was rather good. Good wine-Bad food. Overpriced!"

"We ordered 2 bottles of Jordan chardonnay...fairly pricey bottles. Both bottles had significant sediment at the bottom, which the person who was poured the last glass of each bottle received. I believe we were talking to one of the owners (not Zach) and he told us that, according to the distributor, this was normal for Jordan chardonnay. THIS IS NOT NORMAL. I went home and checked 3 bottles of Jordan chardonnay in my wine cabinet and none had any sediment. One of the couples we were with are regular drinks of Jordan chard and they have not had this problem with any of their bottles. The owner took 10% off our tab, but should have taken an entire bottle of the tab. We are regulars and will not order Jordan chard anymore."

"This was my first time. The food was so good. We got the white pizza after reading multiple reviews on Yelp. We were not disappointed. My only complaint: while I love when my Diet Coke stays filled without me having to ask, this was a little ridiculous. Our server would keep bringing me a new glass of soda and take away the one I was drinking which was still half full. Seems like a total waste to me."

"The food (white pie with pepperoni and mushrooms) was fantastic. The server was a very sweet young blonde. Her only downfall was that I wish she would have checked on us a little more. However, the shining star of this meal was the Moscato they serve by the glass. It is PHENOMENAL. I manage another restaurant on the Plaza, and must admit, I am considering changing our wine selection to include this gem."

"Food was outstanding. The meatball & habanero pizza was as good as I've ever had. Our server was a little under-trained for delivering/handling wine. When a customer buys $150 bottles of wine, there's a protocol for presentation and allowing the customer to confirm the wine is suitable/etc. Apparently, this server was of the "pop the cork and pour" training class. The food was outstanding, so it overall was a very enjoyable evening. Tighten up the wine handling for servers and a 5-star rating across the board."

"We had a great dinner here. We had a party of 10 and the owner went above and beyond to accommodate our table, even giving us a few free apps. One of the nicest owners we have ever encountered. It was my first time at this place and we live on the plaza. We will definitely be back. A lot. Might have found one of our new go to places."

"My husband and I don't eat out often, so when we do, we're looking for a special experience. One of our favorite date nights is to go out for pizza and wine, so for Valentine's Day we decided to try Coal Vines. Although the Valentine's menu looked delicious, we're not that big of eaters, so we split a pizza (and I had a salad) and each had two drinks. The ambience was perfect--we got to sit by the kitchen, and the staff was fun, playful, and attentive. We were pleasantly surprised when the bill was significantly less than we thought it'd be. Coal vines offers a special experience at an affordable price. We're already planning our next dinner out!"

"The pizza at Coal Vines is nothing short of phenomenal. I haven't tried any of the other items from their menu, nor do I think I would recommend anything else simply because the pizza is so delicious. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and overall, a really nice ambiance. The one negative is that the service did seem to be a little slow, but seeing it was a busy night, completely understandable. I definitely recommend Coal Vines, and it has officially become one of my favorite spots on the Country Club Plaza!"

"Like a number of people we read the review in the newspaper. We try it on a Friday night at an early time. We had of course the fix-price menu. With only one choice it is either a hit or a miss with the guest. For my wife it was a hit as for me it was a miss. I watch several couples come in and talk to the hostess, but they were not interested in the theme that night which was sea food. I am okay generally with seafood but my wife loves it. So it is either a hit or miss since there is not a second choice. The bread was very good my wife finally had to grab the last piece before I ate it all. We differed on the wine pairings my wife loved them for me just good. Before you eat there I think that you should ask what the theme will be"

"We have visited Coal Vines before and been very pleased with the service and food. A previous engagment and traffic, made us about 10 - 15 minutes late for our reservation. To our dismay the restaurant gave away our table. We were told that there would be a 15 - 20 minute wait. We were pleasantly suprised when 5 minutes later, they seated us at a table. I understand a restaurant can not hold a seating all evening, however we drive 65 miles just to get to the restaurant. I'm glad they were able to seat us in short order. The food, service, and atmosphere were very good as always has been. Authenic fire baked pizza and italian sandwiches are a specialty. Excellent wine parings are available."

"The food was good, but nothing extra special, except for one thing... the cake. I'm not even sure what the cake was, because it was just given to us as a substitute for the wine on our prix fixe meal, but it was very good, so good that my date is still talking about it days later.
One thing I will say is that the food service was VERY fast and that our waitress took very good care of us, from giving real thought to her food recommendations to giving us the cake, even though it technically wasn't restaurant policy to substitue on the prix fixe."
