"This is a very pretty restaurant in an open, airy space. We have eaten here before.

The wait staff was efficient but lacked warmth; they were almost robotic. We had to wait before our order was taken. Our main dish was luke warm and had to be re-heated. Little complimentary desserts came after the coffee rather than as an accompaniment."

"CONS:
- The bread brought to the table was not warm.
- Some of the clams in the clam chowder seemed to be undercooked.
- The pasta special was given to my date with an octopus leg in it, she specifically asked for no seafood -- We did get this plate refunded
- Steak was very fatty throughout. Didn't finish it and didn't take it home. I can't remember ever not bringing leftovers home before.
- Onion rings were bland - how does this even happen? I am guessing they were undercooked.
- Waiter was great at first but after serving our meal did not stop by until we were ready to leave. I had to ask a bus boy for ketchup for my onion rings.

PROS:
- The free 'shots' of cauliflower soup tasted very good.
- Cocotini and beer = good."

"8 1/2 is a great lunch place, the food is fantastic and the service wonderful. The food is really good, had a beet appetizer that was a work of art and incredibly tasty as well. Main course was really good as well and presentations all around were top shelf.
Would go back here in a second, staff is well trained and very knowledgable."

"The sauteed skate with baby lentils and pineapple chutney was fabulous! But that was just one lunch that impressed me. Lunch is always delicious, service is always friendly and attentive and the booths provide enough privacy to have business conversations without worry of sharing those conversations with other diners."

"Very nice restaurant. The decor was excellent, staff was friendly, and service was great. Nice location and very catchy place. Can be very romantic. It wasn't very loud in which you aren't able to hear one another. The lighting is perfect, the wine menu is extensive. Price is fair. The food was mediocre. I was hoping for something more. Overall, I would rate it a 3/5. You should try it out, but not the #1 place you have to be."

"We ordered the three course prix fixe dinner at Brasserie 8 1/2, and while the presentation was amazing, the food was not as good as we were expecting. The poached cod was very bland, and the seafood chowder was served lukewarm. The desserts didn't dazzle either. Also, our server seemed to be very confused and was inattentive -- she brought us the wrong bottle of wine in the beginning and then didn't come back with the correct one for ten minutes (we hadn't even ordered yet). Overall, we were disappointed and will probably not return."

The service was 4* (and from a waiter who'd only been there 4 weeks - which shows how good the training is) and the food was among the best we've had anywhere in NYC (including much higher priced places). "My friends and I absolutely loved our restaurant week dinner experience here. It was one of the best recent dinner experiences I have had in New York. The service was just remarkable. Our waiter was beyond just friendly and even gave us complimentary treats and drinks! Food was just so beautifully put together. Such a luxury and delight for the taste buds! The desserts were absolutely divine. The portions were great as well. Seats were comfortable and the ambiance so warm and inviting that we were able to have so much fun.

I will definitely return to this restaurant. Absolutely impeccable!"

"We went on a Friday night, as 2 couples, and were well treated, with delicious food.
I then went back on Tuesday night with my (adult) daughter, and although the service was pleasant, the food was a lot less good: we ordered the lamb, which was incredibly gristly and fat, the dessert (chocolate pudding) was ok, nothing special. The atmosphere was also less fun (that is not their fault I suppose)."

"Our waitress was fabulous - very welcoming, great service, and patiently answered our questions. The fluke tartare and new england clam chowder were good, but the tuna tartare was just divine. The olive oil poached cod and braised goat were tasty. For dessert, you have to try the vanilla panna cotta. It is just the perfect combination of creamy vanilla and cheesy goodness. I had the tropical fruit eclair, which was good but could have been better - part of it seemed to consist of syrupy canned fruits which I do not like. Whatever you get, I would recommend getting the wine pairing to go along with your meal."

"It is in the basement of a new building off 5th Ave; a large open area with bar on one level and the dining room below. Though it is large, the feeling is spacious, and glass partitions around the table keep down the ambient noise. We had superb onion soup and clam chowder: my wife said it's the best clam chowder she's ever had, and we are from New England! Very rich Scottish game with small beets and excellent fish dish were outstanding. The staff was quite attentive, though one person was in training and missed a few details. At dessert, there was a small crisis as we were pressed for time and the pastries didnt arrive , but they hurried to get us our order so we made the opera a time. The price is quite reasonable for such high quality."

"This was one of the best experiences I've had in a while. Before this last visit I'd only eaten at the Brasserie a few times but it is one of my favorite spots for drinks. This dining experience was close to perfect: The waiter was attentive without being annoying, the food was superlative. Even something as simple and straight-forward as a salad with a vinegrette-type dressing was a tongue pleaser."

"It's not a new "hot" restaurant but the restaurant week lunch menu/food was just terrific-better than it had to be. While options are limited (3 choices for each course) they're all interesting and beautifully presented. I had skate served on a bed of lentils with diced pineapple as a complement. It was wonderful. The vanilla panecotta for dessert was light and delicious. I had an excellent glass of muscadet for $9.

The service was professional and seamless. All staff attitude was helpful and "can do." I don't love the downstairs space but it's cheerful & sunlit with tables spaced far enough apart so you don't feel as though you're dining with the next table. This is becoming a new midtown favorite."

"our dining experience, at Brasserie 81/2, was wonderful. The service is superb and the food was absoutely scrumptious, with such a wonderful array of textures and flavors. The Sancerre was wonderful and excellently priced, the bread basket was very nice, but not perhaps as fresh as we would have liked, the rolls could have been warmed. My husband and I both had the Crab cake, it was beautifully presented and was full of lump crab, without filler and was not fried, which very fresh. I had the Diver sea scallops, with trumpet mushrooms, pork belly, and quail eggs. It was a delight, very fresh and alot of flavors, that stood on their own and were not cluttered. My husband had the Ciopinno, it was fresh and flavorful. Very enjoyable."

"I was hesitant about this place due to some reviews that indicated it was a little dead. But the place is lovely, the food very good and the service excellent. We were two for dinner and offered a rounded corner banquette which made the meal more intimate and enjoyable. The service by Jessica was just great, to the extent that I asked her name again at the end of the meal just to be able to send a note to the restaurant. It was definitely quiet, but enjoyably so. Our reservation was for 8:30 and at 10:30 we were pretty much the only ones left in the place. Nice wine list with good ranges in pricing to accomodate any budget."

"Been coming here for years and it never disapoints us. Love the open airy decor, tables are spaced far apart, so even when it's full, it never feels crowded. Food is always excellent as is the service.

Booths are big and roomy. Noise level is never a problem.
Love to come here for an afterwork drink as well.

"A truly wonderful dining experience. The service was very attentive. The pace at which everything arrived was surprisingly quick. For midtown, it was an exceptional value. I highly recommend the pig confit - mine was spectacular. There were some very good values in French wines on their wine list which matched well.

We will absolutely be back the next time we are in NYC."

"The price fix lunch was perfect. The French onion soup was the best I've tasted recently. Our waitress was very helpful and attentive. "This is my secret dinner venue. The chef is outstanding and the food is top-notch. The atmosphere is sophisticated and the room very spacious. "I have been going to Brasserie 8 1/2 for years and always love it. However, I went New Year's Eve (and because of time constraints (we only had 1 1/2 hours to eat due to our theater time), I had downloaded the New Year's Eve Menu so my guests would be able to decide in advance what they would eat. However, when we got to the restaurant the New Year's Eve Menu was COMPLETELY CHANGED. I can understand changing a couple of items due to unavailability of fresh items, but the menu was COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE. IT IS FALSE ADVERTISING. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THEIR DOING THAT AND WITH THE CAVALIER EXPLANATION FOR IT.

"The space is amazing! And the quality of the food matches. Often we'd read the menu and think.... hmmm... would I really like this? But then it appears so beautifully presented, seasoned perfectly, and delights your palate. We are never disappointed. The chefs are creative, but the results are always delicious. "I went to Brasserie 8 1/2 for New Years Eve. It was my third time at the restaurant so I expected good food for my friends. However, two of my friends ordered the cod and it was too salty to eat. Then, the waitress kindly let them order another dish so they ordered the trout. However, the trout when cut into was raw. They had to return the dish and by the time it returned, they had lost their appetite. The service was very slow, considering I had a group of 7 people at my table. Very disappointed."

"have been many times over the years. service continues to be wonderful and cheerful. love the banquets, very comfortable. floral displays beautiful and seasonal. the breads are a mix of sour dough and a mutigrain which were excellent,the butter rich and flavorful, yes i will rave about bread and butter when it so deserves. appetizers of yellowtal and sweet breads beautifully presented. sweetbreads perfectly cooked to bring out the nuttiness. buttermilk fried chicken crisp, not freasy, tender and flavorful. the squab filled with fois gras delicious mix of flavors and texture. regarding the deserts the souflee seems to have been pre prepared and was a bit rubbery !!!! a no no for a souflee. great destination for our city center forays."

"Went here on New Year's eve. Liked the setting of the restaurant - you wouldn't know its there unless you had the address. After walking down the stairs there's a bar area that has a hotel-like feel. The restaurant is spacious and modern. The service was spotty - forgot bread plates; didn't fill up waters unless we asked; and brought out the wrong dessert. The food was average - definitely not of value, and the portions small."

"At a convivial early Christmas Eve dinner for six that lasted nearly yhree hours, two steaks were overcooked (medium rare was not even pink in the center) fish portion was minute (perhaps 4 ounces all told) — not really acceptable at $85 per head, But clam chowder was memorable, service was very competent and friendly, table was spacious and private.
A gala evening despite the slips, but an establishment of this quality shouldn't make such slips, especially when it was early (6 o'clock) and there was no press of patrons. Good thing we had had excellent drinks and delicious bread sticks in the bar beforehand and were in a forgiving Christmas mood."

"I was very disappointed by the food at Brasserie 8 1/2. I ordered a tuna salad entree that was the special of the day, and it looked and tasted like something you'd whip up in your own kitchen on a weeknight, in a rush. The clam chowder was also nothing special; the recipe called for sausage and a huge piece of ham in the soup, which, frankly, did not make it look appetizing. Certainly not worth the fancy atmosphere and price. I think this place needs a major overhaul."

"I went on sunday morning when it only has a buffet. It's not great. It's just ok. I've certainly had far better buffet breakfasts in hotels. The atomsphere was fine, nothing great, again it's probably due to the fact that it was the weekend. The decor is nice and it may be fine for mid-week business breakfast if the food is better and you can order off a menu. Brasserie on 53rd and Park is certainly good for mid week breakfasts so this may be similar. I'd pass if it's the weekend."

"I love the space with Matisse and Leger art in a spacious room one arrives in by descending a circular stairway with brass rails. My first time eating dinner here exacted a different experience than at brunch. This is my favorite brunch spot. Lights were dim, the atmosphere serene, the food innovative but not too much so, the service attentive and friendly. The goat cheese appetizer balls are stuff dreams are made of. Calamari and pearl couscous are memorable. With different shaped plates the presentation was artful. If one is looking for a quiet evening with excellent food and great ambiance, this is the spot."

"We had made reservations for Thanksgiving fix prix menu, looking forward to a tasty dinner. We got our appetizer about 40 minutes after having been seated. The appetizer was small, but delicious. We had to wait another 20 minutes for our main course. I had ordered fish (not salmon) and was handed a plate of salmon, without being asked, with the excuse that they had run out of the other kind of fish. I was willing to eat it at that point, but it was so salty that it was inedible. I returned it and the waitress said that she would not charge me for it. I wasn´t charged, but I was still hungry. Dessert was good. Poor waitress looked tired, I can imagine all the complaints she had gotten that night. I would not reccommend Brasserie 8 1/2."

"All of our meats (pork chop/belly, turkey, steak) were overcooked and dry. Other than that, the food was pretty good across the board, but definitely not what I expect for the price.

Where this restaurant really suffers is the service. Our courses took a very long time to arrive, as did any requests (wine, bread, etc). I had to ask for plates with the bread as we were seated at a table with none. A side order was completely forgotten and when I asked about the coupe glace, I was told that it's "like a souffle" (it's nothing like a souffle). In their defense, they were understaffed."

"My companion and I enjoyed Sunday brunch. The room is spacious, colorful, dramatic, with a slightly intimidating long circular stairway that was a challenge for my friend with two replacement hips. The brunch was buffet, fairly traditional with omelets, shrimp, roast beef, all prepared well, but most memorable were the hot and chilled vegetable salads and combinations, most creatively prepared. "This was our first time dining at Brasserie 8 1/2. It happened to be for Thanksgiving dinner. We chose this restaurant based on the prix fixe menu for the evening and the ambience in the photos on their website. Unfortunately, they decided to make this dinner their "black Friday" and overbooked the place. According to our waiter, they had over 800 reservations. We were seated in a bland banquet room rather than the dining room itself. There were huge delays in both taking our order and getting our first course to us. While the food wasn't bad, eating it in their banquet room made me feel like I was at a cheap hotel wedding. My 12 year old was charged as an adult so the tab and tip came to $220 for 2 adults and 2 children. Not cheap at all."

"We had a great table by the kitchen. Our server was awful. She didn’t know how any of the food was prepared and when she told us that they had oysters but she didn’t know where anything was from and told us they only had one kind of oyster on the menu. We asked her to check and she found out that they had more than just the Japanese oyster. She told us that business was slow so they were trying to get rid of them. We thought it was her first night, so we cut her slack. That was until the service got so bad that we begged another waiter to wait on us. She was in such a hurry and there were only about 10 tables in the whole place. Our second course arrived first, so we sent it back. When our seafood arrived the kitchen sent out 4 extra oyster"
