"2nd time here . Don't know why it's not the fourth or fifth time. Excellent food. Staff: Great. Portions are on the small side, but the chef really knows what he is doing. Many unusual ingredients. Great fish and some of the best chicken I have ever had. The only thing I did not like was the white chocolate desert."

"In Blackfish, my wife and I found the perfect restaurant at which to celebrate our 18th anniversary. The staff was extremely courteous and very knowledgeable about the menu. The restaurant is lovely and, most importantly, the food is beautifully presented and evidences a creative use of disparate tastes and flavors to be savored and enjoyed. Having read reviews ahead of time, I had a light meal about two hours before going to the restaurant and so was prepared to enjoy and appreciate the artistry involved in the entire presentation without being distracted by the small size of the portions. We ordered the 5 course chef's tasting menu to which the chef sweetly added beignets as a gift for our anniversary. We look forward to returning."

"I think if you embrace all the awards and praise that have been heaped upon you, you should also be willing to accept the harsh criticism. So to paraphrase, "To whom much is given, much is expected." My wife are I have a goal of visiting every restaurant that appeared on this years Philadelphia Magazine top 50 list. This weeks date night took us to Blackfish which was easily the most disappointing experience this far. We've never been to one of those restaurants having experienced at least one thing amazing. We shared 8 dishes to total and the highlight was the beignets. Salmon, foie gras, squid, scallops, bouillabaisse, halibut, coffee creme brûlée, and beignets. For $175 before tip, there are lofty expectations. None impressed."

"We were there this time for the duck tasting; we are regulars. The food was phenomenal as always and the service very attentive. We particularly the tastings because we try things we wouldn't normally. The duck ham was great, would have ordered it anyway. The salmon cooked in duck fat, no, and it wasn't cooked as much as I like - but I trust the chef to give me a good meal with a storyline. It is fine dining at it's best in terms of the food and the service.
The problem is always the ambiance. It is just too loud. And, as happens too often, a very loud table dominated the relatively small space. Please consider some changes to absorb sound. And if you were the woman with the loud annoying voice near the door, pipe down!!!!"

"As always food was excellent. We had the nine course tasting menu and with the exception of one dish it was all outstanding. The waitress checked after each course was served to make sure we were happy with the dish and when we said we weren't fans of the cod collar she whisked the plates away and returned with a dish to replace it.

"If you like FOOD THAT IS UNIQUE but not strange then Blackfish fits the bill. The preparation is delicious and cooked in a most delicious way. My husband and I had three courses each and we shared each course-so we each tasted six different courses. The mackerel was delicious and the sweetbreads were out of this world. The wait staff was very attentive and helped to make dinner even more enjoyable. Definitely will return."

"This was our first time dining at Blackfish and we couldn't have been more impressed!!! Wow! The food was out of this world and the service was some of the best we've seen. Definitely try the smoked salmon first course, I've never had such a beautiful presentation and each bite got better and better. We will definitely be back to try more menu items. Don't miss this place... Couldn't be happier!"

"Five course tasting menu (no meat). Ice bucket for our white wine. Small, packed, and noisy.
The amuse bouche was a nice, strong-flavored oyster.
spanish mackerel 'crudo,' w/ breakfast radish, navel orange, yuzu kosho. This was very tasty: citrusy and nice texture.
smoked scottish salmon with deep fried egg, potato, sour cream, mizuna. Nice mix of warm and cool, crunchy and gooey. Substantial piece of salmon, w/ mild smoked flavor.
crab cake: gentle seasoning and the crab came through wonderfully.
Fourth was the grilled tuna: cooked almost to perfection (more searing, more raw?) w pumpkin seed, eggplant puree, sunchoke, cauliflower. Not so interesting in flavor.
Raspberry beignet: delicious"

"It had been quite a while since we returned to Blackfish and after dinner last night I have no idea why...the food and service were outstanding. The dishes were beautiful and the taste profiles excellent. The service was great. The staff was very helpful, friendly and just the right amount of attentiveness. The only thing I don't like about Blackfish is the closeness of the tables."

"Blackfish felt like a great restaurant, but we found the food to be disappointing, especially the more we worked down the menu. We ordered three courses and were brought an amuse bouche of butternut squash soup. It was incredible -- I nearly licked the cup clean. Then, our first courses came. My husband had the roasted garlic soup and it did not stand up to the amuse bouche. It was actually a little boring compared to the butternut squash. My oysters came as advertised -- nice lemon foam, but otherwise just OK. Next, we had the pork belly which was shockingly bland and the veal sweetbreads which were spot on. Hangar steak which was excellent, though the eggplant with it was incredibly salty as was his tuna."

"We arrived for our 8:45 dinner reservations and were told there'd be a 15 minute wait, which was fine. However,45 minutes later we were seated. The manager said it was because diners from 6:00 still had not left,a whopping 3.5 hours later,totally unconscionable, totally rude. Lucky for us people who came in at 8 were done by 9:30 and we got their table. We were treated to appetizers and dessert -which was nice, the waitstaff was terrific, and the food was terrific, but the night was a bust. The question should be - who do anger? The people waiting for a table or the people who overstayed their welcome? At some point, the manager has to hand the hangers-on their coats. It's a business, not their private living room"
