Izaka-ya by Katsuy-ya in Manhattan Beach
The Katsu-Ya group has 5 locations in Southern California and growing. Our founder and executive chef Katsuya Uechi tied for #1 ranking for Top Food 2006 Zagat Los Angeles guide. In addition, chef Katsuya has KATSUYA by Starck restaurants with SBE Entertainment in Brentwood, Hollywood, Glendale, L.A. Live and Laguna Beach. There are plans to open more restaurants outside of Southern California. A cool celebrity hang out Hyde Lounge on Sunset Blvd's menu was also produced by no other than our chef Katsuya. With partnership with Mutual Trading Company, the premier Japanese food supplier opened Sushi Institute of American (SIA) in downtown Los Angeles to train future culinary and sushi chefs. We are committed to bring fresh quality foods to all our locations.
"This restaurant is nicely located right in the middle of downtown MB. We had a window table which was light and sunny and also great for people watching. The food however was just OK. Our server seemed a bit overwhelmed and started out a bit cranky with us, but then seemed to warm up. Overall, we found the dining experience to be expensive and unremarkable. There are several sushi options in MB so this restaurant better up its game!"

Review 2 for Izaka-ya by Katsuy-ya in Manhattan Beach
"This restaurant has been hit or miss with service. We have been there many times but have not had the best service at times; long waits between dishes and drinks. The last time we dined there the service was just terrible and I swore we would never return. We decided to give it another try and the service was much better this time. We will return again with the hopes of good service to match the good food."

"Really good sushi. Service was great. I found the atmosphere about as appealing as a grocery store in a train station full of people who skipped lunch. Super hyper people staring down your table the entire time you are eating."

Review 6 for Izaka-ya by Katsuy-ya in Manhattan Beach
"It's an upscale sushi bar that's quite pricey and they have mayonnaise in most of their rolls and refuse to make them without. Unless you want plain sushi or sashimi, it's really not healthy and they do not accommodate requests."

Review 7 for Izaka-ya by Katsuy-ya in Manhattan Beach
"Food was good, but our favorite sushi place in the South Bay is still Sushi Duke in Redondo Beach. The Udon Noodle Soup at Sushi Duke is way better and the food is less expensive with better quality. We've eaten at many Katsuya's, and this one was good, but just not as good as Sushi Duke. For the food, I think the lunch prices may be a better value for the money."

Review 8 for Izaka-ya by Katsuy-ya in Manhattan Beach
"Izaka-ya is one of my favorite sushi bars in the south bay. My only issue with them is the run around I lame excuse I received upon arrival. We arrived 5 min's before actual 9 pm reservation and we were told that they are behind and they can't sit us and they have to treat us as walk in. When I mentioned Opentable they mentioned that they are having issue with opentable and blamed it all on opentable. Can you tell me how is that opentable fault? I think it is more of them over booking Walk-in's vs honoring actual reservation from opentable. We end up waiting and since we were willing to sit at the sushi bar we only waited for 25 min's."

Review 12 for Izaka-ya by Katsuy-ya in Manhattan Beach
"Jam packed; glad to have had reservations, as there were folks lined up outside when we arrived and when we left. Fish was fresh and delicious. Prices were a a bit high, particularly for the premium Saki, which is all they offered for "cold" saki. All in all, delicious food, great evening."

Review 14 for Izaka-ya by Katsuy-ya in Manhattan Beach
"Have eaten here before a few times with good experiences but this was bad.
We were seated promptly but as soon as we sat down, my wife and I were asked immediately if we wanted to order food before we could even look at the menu. Asked the waitress if we could start out with a large beer. Took over 15 minutes to get a beer to our table! And when it did come, it wasn't the server who delivered it and it wasn't even what we ordered! Really? Can it be that difficult? Even received our first dish before this was at our table. We almost left. Ordered some miso soup too but since when does that get delivered near the end of the meal?
Sushi was good but please, this is not rocket science. Dismal service that night."
