Gyu-Kaku East Village is all about fun and food. You are your own chef, cooking tasty morsels perfectly to your liking, right there at your table. It is an ideal way to share a meal with family and friends.
Gyu-Kaku has a variety of original sauces which it uses as marinades and provides for basting of its select meats, poultry, seafood and vegetables. Grilled by the customer over a glowing charcoal brazier, each item becomes a unique and delectable taste experience. Enjoy!
"I can't say enough about Gyukaku. The East Village one is my favorite location and never disappoints. I always know I'm going to have a great meal and leave satisfied."

"This is the second of the locations I have visited for this restaurant and it was amazing. The service was very good. The only issue I had was the server not understanding or speaking English very well. The ambiance was great. Very large restaurant. Nice bar. Great for a romantic date or girls/guys night out. A real fun environment. The food was mouth watering good. Prime meats at a decent price. This location is a little more expensive than the Upper East side location but still reasonable for the prime cut of meats. Definitely recommend all to check it out. You will not be sorry. Next stop, Times Square location! Can't wait!"

"brought a couple of my sons friends here and they loved cooking their own food - they loved the food - lots of choices for all sorts of eaters but the peice de la resistance was of course cooking s'mores over the fire for dessert - brilliant!"

"We had a wonderful time here. Even though we were a little late they held our reservation after we called. Service is outstanding, with a warm greeting to start the evening off right. Our waiter was Karma, and he could not have been more attentive. The entire experience is a lot of fun with your own personal grill right in the middle of the table. Yes it can get a little hot, but cool yourself off with their excellent cocktails and beers. The food was really delicious and just enough. Be forewarned this is a party place, and not a venue for a romantic quiet evening. Go with friends and you will have a blast."

"Went here with a semi-large group for happy hour. I was early for my reservation so I sat in the seating area by the bar. While seated, I met the bartender (his name is Michael)....this man was the highlight of my dining experience, he was funny, energetic, and mixed up 3 perfect drinks. I told him to surprise me and make anything he wanted, each time I was presented with something I wouldn't ordinarily order, but the drinks were awesome! The food is good as always...I'm a frequent diner at all 3 locations in the city, it's a great place to kick back and relax with some friends DURING HAPPY HOUR. I emphase the happy hour because the menu prices are discounted for most drinks and food items."

"This was the perfect choice for our bday dinner for two! We ordered the spring course with the help of our trusty server who taught us how everyrhing worked. Great food, which came out quickly and was a bkast to grill on the tables. Definitely going back!"

"This place is very good! So far the best Cook it Yourself BBQ restaurants. The service is outstanding because they tell you how long to cook each meat and tell you the recommendations (only if you ask directly). Additionally our waiter helped us navigate through the menu. I'd recommend going back because it is worth the price for the amount of food we had (during happy hour)."

"We arrived at 5.44 for our 5.30 reservation due to train issues. The hostess insisted and argued with us that we got there passed our 15 minute grace period that they can't honor out reservation anymore. We looked around a lot of tables are empty so we couldn't understand why she was being so harsh. So she rudely said that they can sit us but we will have to leave before 7.30pm. There were other people who also had similar situation and after us were given the same extremely rude treatment from the hostess. We took the 7.30 table anyway and things were fine for the rest of the meal. By the time we left at 8pm there were many open tables around us. So again I don't understand why the hostess had to be so rude. Very turned off."

"The late night happy hour special was great. The restaurant is spacious so it's never too crowded for a busy place. Service is quick since you cook your own food over the grill."

"Food was amazing, as always. Ther service is quick. They are always clearing your table of empty plates so there is never cluster. They key is to go during one of their happy hour times ( check their website for availability). Their drinks are good, decently strong ... At least for me.... This is a fun place with just you and your special someone or a group of friends. Everyone has a good time. You would think going to a place to eat an having to cook your own food isn't fun, but it actually is. Prices aren't bad either!"

"We have been here many times before. It's been about a year since the last time and the quality of the meat seems not to be as good as before. Somehow the meat seemed maybe watery or frozen, tough not much taste. The dipping sauces are all thin and watery now. Place is still fun and the service is good."

"Definitely a fun place. Hard to beat grilling your own food at the table. Was most recently there for lunch. Good happy hour prices on drinks. My friend and I ordered the Geisha which was a ton of food and good variety. 'Smores for dessert! Lot's of Japanese clientele which speaks to the authenticity of the experience."

"Take my review with a grain of salt. I lived in Japan so I know what good yakiniku should taste like. Gyu-kaku in Japan is a low end chain a bit like Denny's would be. Cheap and cheerful. Here in NYC it is pricier, but not as good. Music is bumping really loud, club style. Except this is no Lavo or Catch or Tao..I mean, you are cooking your own food and going to smell of meat & smoke so it's not like you're going to be trying to sidle up to a pretty girl you see. You go with a group of your own and have a good time. So in that context it's too loud and annoying. You can't hear each other speak. Also, the beers are tiny for $7. The waiters say "kobe"beef, but it's not Kobe. In Japan it would be 1 star, in NY there aren't alternatives so 3"

"3rd time coming and tried a different BBQ course. They're all amazing. This time the Kobe-style course was superb. Our server, Daniel, was great! Explained every dish and checked up if everything was good. I have forgotten my Gyu-Kaku card and Kitti was nice enough to look up my card info. Definitely awesome!"

"This BBQ place is different from the rest because I did not SMELL like BBQ after leaving the restaurant, which is great!
Highly recommend this place for groups, they have great servers who will explain to you how long to cook the meat ( time frame) and was confortable making recommendations since there was lots of choices to pick from.
For 4 people, we ordered a set that was $160 ( a lot of protein), the set also came with S'mores, ice cream and Lady M's crepe cake."

"It was a fun place to make good tasting food. I don't have anything bad to say about the service or the food but it just felt a bit like an Asian themed Applebee's on the inside which would be fine if it wasn't located in the East Village (where there are amazing authentic asian cuisines)."

"Went there for lunch, their lunch menu was great. The food was good. Mainly had meat and one side. This was our first time to a do-it-yourself hibachi. Kind of kept burning meat in the beginning, but practice eventually led to perfection."

"We've been dining at Gyu-kaku East Village more than 20 times but We had the worst experience on that night. They tried to over charge us more than $50. Also food came very late and they gave us a check while we were still eating because they knew that there were something wrong on the check. I tried to talk to the manager but of course he or she never appear. Anyone who reads this, please always double check your bill."

"The food was very well marinated and the service was great. We went during happy hour so drinks were 50% off and the food was much cheaper than during regular hours. I still ended up spending about $35 without drinks so I don't know if I will go during regular hours. It was definitely an interesting eating expereince though!"
