Salt House Tavern - A 75-seat, contemporary tavern housed in an old printing press warehouse built in the 1930’s. Exposed brick, original hardwood floors, 12 foot windows and oversized rusted iron girders. "Went here for a special occasion for the third time on a Saturday night and it was overall a good experience. I ordered the NY Steak, and it was served sliced of course, but the problem was that it was served room temperature. Maybe I'm not enough a "foodie" to know this is how it should be served or how chef wants it served, but it was truly a let down. The potatoes and side dishes were a fine temperature so I suspect this isn't the case. Didn't have enough time to complain or reorder, but most likely won't be going back.
I go to restaurants like this for special occasions only (this was a birthday present to my partner) so spending this much on a meal, and having the entrée be a let down is not something I want to chance in the future."

"We were blown away by the Salt House. It was an absolute memorable evening. I had the pacific cod splashed with the juices from a bowl of the best tasting clams I have ever experienced. Others in the party had a succulent pork tenderloin and the moistest baked chicken imaginable. The veges on the side meshed perfectly with the dishes. The appetizers, which included a creative octopus dish plus peppers served with the freshest Acme bread established the evening. The waiter had professional wine certification and brought us perfectly matched whites and reds within a moderate price range. The desserts were bold but not too heavy and rich. It was certainly one of the best meals we've had in the past few years."

"The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is the noise....much too noisy. But, the food is AMAZING!! I went for lunch and had roast pork loin over a bed of farrow with spinach, carrots and roasted apples. I would say the best meal I have had out in a very long time. The flavors were incredible, the pork was perfectly cooked and it was hot! My friend had the flounder sandwich and said it was the best sandwich he'd ever had (and he's PICKY!!)..."

"Salt House is always good. I try to have lunch there once a month. Getting in early and making a reservation is the way to go as it fills up fairly quickly at lunch time. Good food and service. I recommend giving them a try. You will return often."

"It's one of my favorite downtown lunch spots. Love the casual cool interior and the food has been consistently great since the day they opened. I work at SFMOMA and it's close enough to meet friends or take out-of-town visitors for lunch. I've tried everything on the menu but often have the burger and onion rings because they are irresistible!"

"The appitizers and snacks were really fun. We had chips with a dipping sauce that was so good I licked the little bowl. The fries with cheese and gravy was also great. The food was good and the service was fine. The only problem is that open table said we did not honor our reservation. It was worked out, but it was annoying."

"This was such a mixed experience. Good bartender, table ready, pleasant greeting. But the food was not good. The poutine, which I'd had here a long time ago and liked, was soggy with an awfuil texture and odd taste. it went uneaten and the waiter did not ask about it. Some of my oysters were so small that it was difficult to taste them. The cod was horribly overcooked. The desserts were fine. But the noise was so incredibly loud that you could not hear yourself think, never mind have a convesation with your guests. I'll resist going back."

"Delicious food & as someone in New Business Development, was a staple in my rotation, BUT lately the service has been absolutely horrible. The servers ignore you, won't even look in your direction-- definitely unnecessary attitude and ambivelance. We had to flag down a buser with direction for water or cream for coffee or to ask where our food was after 35 minutes in and hadn't yet arrived. ZERO apologies or any ownership of the service by the waitstaff and no visit from the manager to ask how everything is. Really? You care that little? I hope they up their game, because as much as I eat out & bring clients to restaurants for lunch/drinks/dinner, I will go somewhere else if their complacency continues."

"This restaurant came highly recommended to us. While is was a good meal, it wasn't special and it wasn't worth the prices charged. Also, as the evening unfolded the noise level grew steadily making conversation difficult. My wife ordered the Green Farro for an entre and it was surprisingly expensive at $24. Worse, it was very salty and she spent the rest of the evening drinking water to recover. I ordered the Pork Loin and it was better. However, my glasses of Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon were $18 each while a whole bottle sells for about $26. A markup for wine is expected, but that is ridiculous. Overall the experience was fair but not good value. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant based on this experience."

"Service was good - the keg kicked at the bar the bar tender was nice and offered me the 1/2 pour while the new keg was set-up. Nice to have a good IPA (Green Flash) on draft.

"Everytime we go, we are pleasantly surprised. What is nice about this restaurant they only serve what is in season. Our quail appetiser was delicious. For entree we had cod with clams in broth. The fish was nice and flaky. It was not drowning in broth. Just a nice shallow puddle. Had this with peas and carrots on the side. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable."

"For a foodie, the fare was decent, but not spectacular. The service was personable, but seriously flawed. On a weeknight 9:15pm seating, it took our group of 6 about 45 minutes to get appetizers (the poutine is not as spectacular IMHO as in some reviews I've seen), and it was close to 2 hours before we got our mains. One of my guests fell asleep at the table (literally). No apology or even acknowledgement from the staff."

"I really wanted to like this restaurant after reading all the sterling reviews. The vibe was hip, and the place was packed with the noise level high but not ridiculous. The starter seafood platter was fresh and wonderful. Then our highly anticipated Poutine (fries, cheese curds, gravy) was not hot. In all fairness our waitress offered replacement but we didn't want to get full before the main course. Then we had a lull of 45-50 minutes before our food arrived. After such a long wait the meal was only ok (one over salted, one lacked enough garlic/butter broth, the beef duo was good). With so many restaurants to enjoy in SF, we won't be back."

"Although we like subtle tastes and good quality food, along with cooking without salt, this place was not what we expected for the money. Salt House tries to be crafty with its' menu but some dishes, with little flavor, do not stand up to what it sounds like on the menu. It was an overall o.k. experience, but we would not go back because the food here did not really match up with the ambitions and ideas of the restaurant."

"I loved the modern/industrial decor yet it's got a cozy feel to it too. Nice place for a work lunch near the downtown market st area. The food was good. Our only complaint which is typical now days...my lunch mate ordered a Well Done hamburger which was delivered rare. They fixed it."

"The food was wonderful! I had the grains and vegetables and my friend had the poached egg and vegetables. We're vegetarian, the restaurant isn't. Everything was very flavorful and great portion sizes. The menu changes all of the time and we'll certainly be back. The ambiance is loud but energetic In a good way. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone hard of hearing. On a personal note, I had my first date here with the man I'm engaged to. I think it's very romantic :)."

"This was my second time eating at Salt House. Both times the service and ambiance were great. The food was great the first time: the chicken, fish, fries, and the drinks were delicious. The second time, I ordered a beet salad. Unfortunately, it wasn't that great. For the price, there wasn't much on the plate & the scoop of soft beet tasted & looked like it came straight out of the can. I've had better beet salad under $10 elsewhere. Anyway, I would still come back here; however, I won't order the beet salad again."

"I took my out of town family here to celebrate my birthday late on a Friday night. We had 915 reservations. We ordered the poutine, it was INCREDIBLE, all be it not all the way hot, even after we sent it back once. At least they made us a fresh order of it. We also ordered the poached egg with pork belly hash and it was great.Someone ordered the Beef Duo, rare, and it was excellent. My mother had the Green Farro and really enjoyed it. Against my instinct, I ordered the pork shoulder cooked with molé spices on the server's suggestion...it was ok, but definietly would not choose to order it again.The cocktail menu is boring, though I ordered the Port Royal and it was decent. Can't wait to go back!"
