Gertrude's Restaurant, located inside the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), is where John Shields celebrates Chesapeake cuisine using local foods, in a warm and stylish setting.
Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible.
The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.

"Tuesdays with Gertie's beat Tuesdays with Morrie anytime, and Morrie was good. The Maryland Chicken is astounding, the biscuits sublime. Have the soup. Have the fish. Have whatever you can and try something you mightn't normally because it will surprise and please."

"I went here to celebrate my graduation with family and friends. The food was delicious, the waiter was kind and accommodating. The portions were the perfect size, not too much food but also not too little. The weather was gorgeous so we got to sit outside and enjoy the view of the fountains and sculptures. It was also a great place to take a few photos to remember the occasion."

"I mostly enjoyed the location and the ambience After my graduation we ate there and had the opportunity to take pictures outside where interesting sculptures were located. Since I am a culture lover, the Baltimore Art Museum was a perfect location for me. The service was great and they were very flexible.
After we paid the bill, they even let us (group of 7) hang out at our table for at least another hour. But the best part is that they surprised me with a Congratulations desert as I think they saw me with my graduation gown."

"Five of us dined on a busy Friday at 1:00 pm. Our choices varied widely over the menu from a prosaic burger to the seafood salad (yum!). Our server was quite attentive, considering how busy he was. Overall, it was a nice experience again."

"Everything was fine except the noise level.I guess that nothing can be done with the stone and glass walls. When the band would take a break it was tolerable.On a previous occasion,there was background music.This time it was much louder and although probably nice music, it was overbearing.My Mother In Law had an awful time with it and even though I have good hearing,I couldn't hear conversation at the table when they played.We were at the opposite end of the room from the band."

"We had a great meal. Our food was just delicious. The waitress had a great personality although the bartender was a bit slow getting drinks to her and poured the wrong wine once. The sculpture garden is a great place to sit and they have live music on Friday nights."

"We visited for a family celebration. Service was not rushed, and the server was extremely efficient and readily assisted one of us with making sure some food "intolerances" were identified and avoided with the menu. The calamari appetizer was huge! The duck breast would have used more seasoning but the portion was very generous. Desserts were also large. We especially liked the effort to provide local, sustainable and vegetarian food items."

"Every time I go here, I'm pleasantly surprised by how great everything is. Had the pork sliders, and the zuchettes to start, followed by the tuna steak and rock fish, and we ended with key lime pie and the chocolate decadence.
Everything was delicious! The outside seating is beautiful and definite plus!"

"I hosted a bridal luncheon for 8 on a very busy weekend and we did not have any problems. Our server Elena was so professional and attentive to our groups needs. The cream of crab soup was smooth and delicious and the berry salad was fresh and chilled perfectly. All other diners enjoyed their meals as well. I have been here several times and have never had a bad experience. Great outdoor patio for dining as well."

"I made reservations at Gertrudes for my sister's bridal party brunch. There were 6 of us in the party. The experience and service was average. I asked the waiter if he could split the checks but he could not do that but could use different cards to apply to the bill. When the bill came, a side of homefries was left on the bill even though we did not receive them, I asked the server to take that off the check. When he returned with the new bill, it was more money, I noticed he added gratuity to the new check! I was surprised he didn't mention that when he handed it back to me and i'm glad I looked at the check before splitting the bill with everyone."

"My family and I went there on Saturday for brunch and thought it was amazing! The food and service were great and we toured the museum afterwards making it a wonderful way to spend the morning. Our waiter mentioned the "Afternoon Tea" that they do once a month and my daugthers and I are looking forward to trying that in June. Wonderful place!"

"We like Gertrude's because it is both conveniently and beautifully located, in the Baltimore Museum of Art. It is also attractively decorated. The food is good to very good; the desserts very good. But this last time service was incredibly slow. We waited almost 45 minutes to order our food. To be fair, the restaurant was very busy during our last visit. But service here is often on the slowish side. It's hard to know whether that is because they don't have enough wait staff but it needs to be improved."

"Though jam-packed w/ people from 2 concerts ending, staff rescued the day with extra bread and filling our drink orders quickly so we could sip wine & nibble as we waited. We had a very good meal--a nicely grilled chicken w/ garlic mashed potatoes for one and a group of tasty small plates for the other. The fried oyster appetizer was absolutely divine-- light and perfect w/ an excellent dipping sauce that also went well w/ the steamed asparagus. A spinach salad has all the right ingredients, but could have used a little more dressing and bacon. The least successful item, strawberry-rhubard crumble, was not up to the usual excellence here. We attribute the minor slip ups to having all the tables fill at the same time slot after the concerts."

and attitude of the hostess was not. We actually left the restaurant last year when refused seating we thought would be more comfortable and suit our needs. We were pleased to that on May 3rd the host was very accomodating and the

"Brought a good friend of mine here for Thursday dinner and she was rightfully impressed with the food (Smith Is. Crab cakes- A+) and the surroundings...always a great experience at Gertrudes: consistent and reliable.

"I chose Gertrude's for my husband's birthday because of our past great experiences there, but this time the service left a lot to be desired. We sat outside and perhaps the waiters just had too much to do waiting tables both inside and out, but we were left for over 30 minutes without even a sighting of our waiter, and even then had to flag him down through the window. I appreciate wait staff not hovering, but do expect that they appear occasionally to move things along."

"Stopped in for a long lunch with an old friend on a week day. We had great service, and he didn't mind that we took up a table for almost 2 hours! I had a tomato and porcini mushroom soup that was more on the just OK side, but I ordered the Spinach Salad with fried oysters, and oh my goodness was this one of the best salads I've have in a while. And the oysters were perfection! My friend had the Grilled Cheese and soup, and all were delicious for her, especially the fries. "Gertrudes is my favorite go-to spot for practically every occasion. Sunday Brunch is a quintessential laid-back, jazzy affair with fabulous food. I've been to casual lunch in the sculpture garden and buisiness lunches under the tent -- John Shield's extensive, imaginative menu is always appropriate! BTW Shields was "doing" local and sustainable way before the trend kicked in - he incorporates his famed Chesapeake flavor into everything. An added bonus is it's location - in the BMA!"

"I went on a Saturday morning for brunch with my boyfriend and Aunt. I ordered the stuffed French toast, which was honestly just so-so. I wish that it had more of the cream cheese honey filling and the apples were cooked to mush. My boyfriend ordered the steak rancheros and he absolutely loved it. My aunt had the traditional crab cake with a side Caesar salad and she raved about it. Our waiter was awesome and the atmosphere was just perfect! I thought I would have trouble finding parking but there was a lot right by the restaurant. I would definitely come back again."

"Waited a long time for the food to come and then it came cold. Some of the orders were incorrect. Before ordering we were told the special was lump meat crab cakes with just butter and lemon, this was not the case. They were shredded crab meat with filler. Waitress was defensive and rude. Totally a very unpleasant experience."

"First visit to Gertrude's at the BMA was Sunday brunch to celebrate my fiance's birthday. The food was wonderful. I'm sure when it warms up and the outdoor eating area doesn't have to be covered with the enclosed tent, the ambiance will be a little nicer. Our server was attentive but seemed a little bit "out there". The only problem with our visit is that instead of running my card through for the $32+ of our bill - it was run through for $102 - still waiting for the credit to come through on my account for that snafu. Otherwise, we had a very enjoyable meal."

My gripe about Gertrude's continues to be that the people that bring out your food NEVER know who is eating what. How difficult can it be to sort this out on the ticket? Every course they come out with food and set the wrong items in front of you! Definitely a training issue that they need to address as it has gone on far too long!"

"Table wasn't ready when we arrived, had to wait 20 minutes for the reserved table. The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't that great either. I was quite frankly expecting something better for the price. The best thing we got was the appetizer a Crabette, the BBQ pork was a sore disappointment and the Chocolate indulgence was nothing to indulge in, it was just ok.
The place was very noisy, to the point it was difficult to have a conversation at our table. Service was substandard and the waiter obviously felt that it was a chore to serve, no joy there.
I would not recommend Gertrude's to people because of the average food compared to price and substandard service."
