"We live in the East Bay, but rarely get to Rockridge. However, Toast will bring us back. Very friendly staff, great food (although small menu, likely changes frequently). Fab ambience, with large windows throughout and twinkly lights. Only sour note was the tables in the dining room, which are very crowded. We were there for a date night and decided to eat at the bar instead."

"The first disappointment was that there were no beers on tap; the final was that the bread pudding tasted too fruity, like pane tone. In between, everything everything else was good. Our whiskey-based cocktails (modified Manhattans), appetizers, and main plates were tasty and attractive, albeit modestly sized. Our experience was what we expected at a restaurant known for small plates and wine."

"The noise level inside was high so we sat on the patio which was far more pleasant. We were there for lunch and both the food and service were very good. I had hot tea which came in an open pot (i.e., no lid), so the tea became cool very quickly. I suggested to our server that they heat up the pots before brewing the tea and to use pots with lids. The server agreed and we talked about using tea cozies, which would add an interesting touch!
My lunch partner decided that her lunch was so delicious that she and her husband would go back there for dinner the following evening."

"Toast has a pretty small menu, but my dish (braised pork shoulder) was quite tasty. My friend's pasta looked quite plain, but she liked it. Dessert (Boca Negra) was delicious, but I wish they had an espresso machine. However, I will definitely go back. The service was very good."

"Have been several times and each time have been impressed with the quality of the food. I appreciated that when our inside table was not quite ready on time that we were offered the option of either waiting a few minutes or sitting in the table being held for us outside. It's very noisy inside, so I do recommend sitting outside."

"I had lunch there with a friend and it was wonderful. Leila was our server and she had a great attitude and was there when we needed something without being pushy or intrusive. "The food at Toast was exceptional, and I appreciated the ambience. The wine and cocktail list was very good, and our server was very knowledgeable about all the wines and helped our party make a fine selection. The only problem was the kitchen forgot one of the meals for our table, so one guest had to watch the rest of us eat while they made her food. The server explained they just moved to a new kitchen and they were working out the kinks. She bent over backwards to accommodate us for the error, and I am going to assume this will not be a regular mistake. When the food finally arrived, my friend proclaimed it was worth the wait and was very delicious."

"I have visited Toast twice recently, and both times I was wowed by the food and the personable staff. Roast chicken and meatballs have been elevated to a superb level here. The yellowtail crudo with rhubarb and mint was both adventurous and unpretentious. Our servers were relaxed and real. The wine menu offers tastes as well as wines by the glass, to suit every need and every occasion. I hope Toast is around for a long time -- this lively restaurant is a wonderful addition to the Rockridge scene!"

"We were told that there would be a special Mother's Day Brunch. Wrong. Same menu as dinner/lunch menu with the addition of one very weak egg dish. I took three Mothers for a special Day celebration and ended up a bit embarrassed. Grilled cheese sandwiches at 10AM?

"I got there early when the restaurant was almost empty, and I was by myself. It took 15 minutes before anyone came by. It took an hour and a half for the whole dinner, and they ran out of the dessert I wanted (there were only 4 or so on the menu, and that took an amazingly long time to discover they didn't have it once I ordered it). Service was INCREDIBLY slow. Finally after a long wait between the appetizer and the entre, they apologized for the delay and offered bread. Which was then promptly followed by the entre. The food that I was able to eat was good, but the service was amazingly bad. And given the prices, pretty inexcusible. I haven't decided whether I will give it a second chance yet."

"My family & I dined here for Mother's Day and were truly surprised by the lack of thoughtfulness on the part of Toast. They opened two hours early for Mother's Day brunch, so we expected that they'd know what type of guest would be dining - kids and families. There was absolutely nothing kid-friendly about the experience - not many children I know would dive happily into an arugula salad. I believe they also just served their normal lunch menu (my husband was eating a chicken sandwich at 10 a.m.). They turned away a family without reservations, citing they were booked. The family went on OpenTable and booked a table for that exact moment., and were seated immediately/ There were about 10 other things that made us think: nobody here cares."

"Well I must say that I was so impressed with TOAST the first time around that I suggested to a friend that we have lunch there...thinking I had found a neighborhood gem. This time was completely different, and not in a good way!!! First, I'll address the service, "TERRIBLE". This was not only embarrassing for the restaurant, but for me since I had suggested the place. Secondly, the food portions were skimpy and I sent my sandwich back to exchange the salad type and got it 20 minutes later. Probably because of the POOR SERVICE. Thirdly, it took forever to get someones attention to get the bill, and even longer to pay it. The server picked it up and it disappeared into the abyss. So to summarize, I won"t be recommending this place to anyone!"

"We went to Toast for a special dinner and our experience was excellent! The only downside, if you are looking for a romantic time, is that it was pretty loud (we were there at 7:30 on a Tuesday) and most of the tables are pretty close together. If you would like some more privacy, request a table against the wall.
But the food, drinks and service were all top notch. The food is mostly organic and all from scratch, and you can feel it! After a full meal of drinks, apps, entrees and dessert, we felt amazing and not bloated ;) And our server was attentive and always there when we needed her but not hovering at all.
Overall, highly recommended! And oh, I almost forgot, they offer Mariposa gluten free bread for their sandwiches - YUM!"

"The two items noted in the title were the most memorable things about it. The menu items--largely upscale CA-cuisine bar bites--were fine and well-prepared, just not anything we hadn't seen before. We were even joking (before we were told the dessert options) about what the most stereotypical dessert items would be, and indeed we correctly guessed that a warm/flourless chocolate cake would be one of them. So if you're new to the area and haven't already had ten different versions of pate, arugula salad, olives, and so forth, or if you just want an evening of outdoor dining, it's worth checking out."

"We've eaten here several times and have always had great service. This time, after the waiter brought us our appetizers and cocktails, we enjoyed that course, but then sat with empty plates and glasses for over 30 minutes before he stopped by to even take our dinner order. When he did, I asked if I could see the wine list again, as I wanted to order something different with dinner. He never brought the list, and I had to ask the food runner for it when he brought my soup course.

"TOAST is close to being a superior experience but a couple of small problems are holding it back. First, service is friendly and cheerful, but also slow verging on lackadaisical. It can't be totally blamed on the front of house because the kitchen isn't that snappy either. The food is good but not consistently inspired: the pork shoulder was terrific and the cocktails clever but the other courses and salads were adequate. Don't get me wrong: TOAST is not bad at all, but in Rockridge it faces serious competition and it doesn't shine by comparison. What does it want to be? If it's a wine bar with munchies, it needs more tapas and a mellower vibe. If it's a full-on Bay Area restaurant, it needs more focus and investment in menu and service."

"They were very busy when we were there, so I understand that the service would be a little slow. The orders and drinks came out in reasonible time after ordering. However, our requests for water and bread seemed to be incredibly slow, even after asking multiple times. It's as if the person cutting the bread and refilling the water bottles took the night off and the wait staff had to do it when they got around to it."

"Our table was the second seated and yet our server took 10 min to greet us. Although the place filled up we continued to have to find our server for most steps of our meal.
We have not found this to be the case in prior visits so we blame it on our particular server. Management should do a better job of managing new staff.

"This place was great, though it did have plenty of yin and yang, good and bad. Our server was a tad unresponsive and forward, but the Manager was amazing. we asked for wine recommendations to pair with our dinner and he was informative and spot on. Food was great, when it was cooked. My chicken came out raw in the middle, but they took it back and recooked it, and it tasted great. all the apps, mains, and desserts were very tasty.
So it had it bumps, but I imagine it is a rare event.

"Toast had a fun menu with lots of interesting small plates and main course options. Megan our server also played a key role in guiding us through a very nice evening of dining. The pork meatballs and asparagus with lentil salad both had nice kicks in their sauces which gave each dish a nice surprise finish. This should be a great destination once its dining room is opened."

"We were seated pretty promptly. The place is small so no sitting around in the bar having drinks while you are waiting for your table. When we go seated we had a nice big table for four. We ordered plates and shared everything. Kind of noisy but not impossible to hear. The cauliflower was particularly good. We got olives and pate' for appetizers."

"The chocolate chip cookie that comes with the lunch was the high light. It was truly the best I've ever had, next to the one served at the Hilton at University of Pennsylvania, of all places. The decor is hip and cool. The service, however, better step up its game. My friend and I were the only table for a long time inside for lunch. Then another couple arrived. No server, not once, stopped by to see if we were okay during lunch. Not once. Not even a friendly check in. Every time we had to flag down the waiter, he seemed every so slightly annoyed. When they were at our table in the beginning to take our order, and at the end to deliver the check, they were pleasant enough (she much more than he!) But really people. This is not how it works."
