"We found Hops & Hominy through OpenTable and are glad we did. The food was great as was the wine. We plan to return to try more items on the menu. The Halibut and the Shrimp & Grits were very good. We followed that with the bread pudding, which was also pretty darn good."

"Nice relaxed atmosphere with excellent flavorful food. Everything was cooked perfectly and seasoned to bring out maximum flavor. Service was friendly and prompt. Can't go wrong here. Just don't ask them to call a cab. Apparently they don't have much pull with the cab company. It's much easier to just flag one down outside."

"The food here is pretty heavy - corn bread, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese. Even the salads are heavier than usual.

The food was tasty.

The owner/chef came by the table to say hello, which was a very nice touch. We appreciated it.

The place was bustling on a Saturday night. They seated us upstairs which was almost too quiet at first and then a big group showed up at a nearby table and things got very loud. Things were pretty intense on the main floor, so I'm not sure where the best tables are.

The food choices were interesting compared with the usual fare at other places.

The waitress was amazing - great timing and just the right amount of engagement.

I'd recommend the place for an interesting night out in SF."

"Great list of beer on tap. The deep fried oysters were fabulous. Best pork chop I have ever eaten; moist, tender, flavorful. Everyone at the table was satisfied. The bread pudding isn't what I would call a traditional bread pudding, but was out of this world tasty. Our table also ordered the fried green tomatoes, the burger, and the duck breast. Everyone left happy. Would definitely eat here again. Vibe wasn't amazing but was comfortable and pretty quiet for a small space - although we were definitely off peak with a 6:30 Friday reservation. What a difference the coat of paint makes - almost didn't realize it was the old Azul space."

"I loved the black eyed pea fritters. The cocktails were well-thought out and had a nice balance of original not too-sweet options and dessert-like drinks. The sous-vide seared pork chop was fantastic and the burger a delight. I wish that we could have stayed for dessert. On the whole, a great experience that I'd be happy to repeat. Our server also was incredibly attentive. I was surprised that the food came out so fast for prime time on saturday night."

"As always Hops & Hominy was fabulous. The servers are helpful, kind, and present. The atmosphere is energetic and fun. Most importantly the food is wonderful! Each time I've been I've had a different item on the menu and each time I am impressed. This place is great for a dinner with friends or a date. The drink menu is creative and tasty. I highly recommend the shrimp and grits! You will not be disappointed!!"

"We arrived at the tail end of the day for Easter Brunch. They had run out of a couple of the interesting things on the brunch menu, which was too bad but not unusual given the day we were there. The cheese grits were fantastic! Service was good, especially water refills, and servers were all pleasant and friendly. There were a few lulls between check-ins, but nothing really objectionable. People at the bar were having a good time, but not raucous. We were drawn to Hops & Hominy because of their regular menu posted online, and will try it again for lunch or dinner, with cocktails. The bartender liked my easter socks. Be aware that most of the published menu is not available on Sundays."

"My friend and I decided to give Hops a try. The atmosphere is definitely vibrant...not the place for a quiet romantic dinner. The wait staff has to lean in very close to you to hear and be heard. Cornbread is served hot out of the oven in a cute little cast iron pan. Be warned that for any addition cornbread ordered will cost you. On the cocktail front, my friend had a Salty Dog and I opted for the Rob Van Winkle.

The Salty Dog was your standard pup, but the Van Winkle was pretty tasty. The Van Winkle is a concoction of House Vanilla Infused Barrel Select Dickle, (fancy term for vanilla infused bourbon) Basil, and House Made Sour. "The southern-style food was good as were the cocktails. They served warm corn bread with a honey butter to start that was yummy. I ordered the shrimp and grits which was tasty and so was the black cod that my friend ordered. However, I was really surprised by how few people were at the restaurant or bar at 10pm on a Saturday night. Not sure if it's the location but it's not a place I'd recommend for the bar scene at night, at least not based on our experience."

"What happened to the portion sizes?? On previous visits, the pork chop was hearty and delicious, one of my favorite entrées in San Francisco. It’s been reduced to a thin, four-bite mini-chop. The blackened grouper was also much too small. This is a fun restaurant with friendly servers and a lively atmosphere. I want to like it, and I know that profit margins are tight, but I would rather spend $5 more for a generous portion. After my latest meal, I can't recommend it."

"This was my second time to Hops & Hominy and it was just as good as I remembered it. We started with the black eyed pea fritters and the Mac n Cheese. Both were delicious. "The food and beer here is fantastic - but I want to take a minute to comment on the excellent service given some of the other reviews. I was in town with my colleagues for a medical conference this past weekend. We had a reservation for 6 but at the last minute 3 more people joined and we weren't able to notify the restaurant until we showed. The hostess and servers at Hops and Hominy didn't bat an eye! They rearranged the tables and we were seated within 10 mins. Thank you guys - great service!!"

"For us the restaurant hits the sweet spot of having a relaxed atmosphere accompanied by great food. The service was great, but the noise level is very high (maybe I'm just getting old). We loved the black eyed pea fritters with the spicy sauce and my spouse's seared halibut was excellent. My shrimp and grits was very good, the only minus was it seemed to only have one chunk of crab meat in it when I expected it to have more. Otherwise it was a very good dining experience for us, we recommend this restaurant to others."

"Service was adequate for what we needed but I wouldn't say great; most food was very good however the grits which I was looking forward to were AWFUL. Dessert was never delivered but that wasn't a real problem. We were there for an extended time and the flow was nice and they did not bother us to leave our table, while we were having drinks afterwards and since we were a larger group this was nice. Overall, I would go back but not order the grits which were like mashed potatoes instead of grits..."

"The food was quite good and was worthy of return visits in the future. The noise level was however almost unbearable and may very well keep me from returning. Conversation was close to impossible. The hard wall are just too good as reflectors and it's difficult to see how absorbing materials could be used to reduce the noise without changing the character of the p;ace. Too Bad."

"It was fun but the kitchen wasn't very good. The appetizers were very good but waaaayyyyyy too long to wait for our entres because we had to cancel them (fried chicken) because they came 50 minutes after we ordered. Waitress was very sweet and not her fault. FYI, our reservation was at 7:15 on Saturday March 2nd and we were seated promptly but everything was slow once we sat down."

"The staff could not be friendlier. Clearly they love working there. The chef/owner came to our table. We offered a suggestion and he is going to implement it! This is a wonderful place. We ordered all sides for our dinner. Everything was flavorful and delightful. It is just a lot of fun to be there. It seems the secret is out. It gets crowded, but everyone is happy."

"Awesome restaurant, fanstastic food, inventive delightful cocktails! I'm not giving the food a 5 because a few dishes did not have much salt in them, and I'm not the biggest fan of the sous-vide method for cooking meat (meat is very tender but has no crust or crispiness on the outside). But honestly, my personal preferences aside, it was wonderful."

"I've been twice now, once with a friend then again with family because it was THAT good the first time around, the kitchen did not disappoint however the service was a little lacklustre on the second go which was fine - because the family did not notice - however since I had experinced such a stellar all around experience the first time I was expecting that trend to continue. The hot cornbread, delicious apps and inventive cocktails are all reason enough to go; however evry dinner tried has been incredibly spot on. Love this kitchen and it's execution!"

"I had heard a lot about the cornbread and was looking forward to trying it. It was hot--right out of the oven--and tasty, but there was only a very small portion to be split among four people. I ordered the swordfish which came on a small bed of cooked vegetables. It was cooked and seasoned well. I think the quality of food is very good, but portion sizes are small. They have an excellent selection of draft beer. It was also quite loud in the restaurant and it was not easy to have a conversation."
