Tiella serves modern Southern Italian cuisine. Its inventive and sophisticated menu is inspired by and elevates the home-cooked meals and peasant culinary traditions owners Giuseppe Castellano and Mario Coppola were raised with in Naples, Italy. Indeed, Tiella takes its name from the Neopolitan word for a cast-iron pan that is used for baking, grilling or frying meats, fish and breads. Our signature tiellas are pizza-like appetizers baked in our wood-fired oven.
Our philosophy is that the greatest meals require the finest ingredients. We import mozzarella di bufala, stracciatella and other fine cheeses, as well as risotto and prosciutto from Italy. Many other ingredients are sourced from local producers and farmers. To ensure that we serve the very best bread and pasta, we make our own.
The extensive wine list is comprised of Italian makers and complements the menu.
"The food was great, service was great, If you are looking to go somewhere casual with great Italian food this is the place. I had the Stracciatella E Tartufo Tiella and the Garganelli for my entree and both were excellent."

"I travel the country on business and eat at a lot restaurants that are mediocre at best, but Tiella is a true gem. Interiors leave a lot to be desired and the seating is very tight, but the food more than makes up for it!"

"The first Courses were excellent, agnolotti with mussels and clams and an eggplant dish. The veal chop was also very good. The risottos and gluten free pasta with vegetables were overlooked. Service was not very present but when we caught their attention, they were very accommodating."

"Four of us dined together, having appetizers and main courses only. Seven different dishes (one was duplicated); of these, three were well-regarded, but four were disappointing for two main reasons: uninspiring/contrived conception, and too-limited presence of key/more expensive ingredients such as shrimp, swordfish. Overall the meals seemed overpriced for what they offered."

"Tiella hits the mark: its dishes are inventive combinations with individual ingredient integrity. I had the dorado in a potato crust, scallops wrapped in speck on a bed of pureed peas topped with ricotta and black truffles, and both were excellent.Paired with a bottle of Gavi, it was a memorable meal. My girlfriend, who is from Firenze, and of course is the final arbiter of all food italian, was also impressed with the meal."

"One of the best Italian meals in the city. Although I live in the neighborhood I still think this place is worth traveling around the city for. Been here twice and both times were incredible."

"This place felt like an old neighborhood hangout. The owner/manager was greeting a lot of guests by name and asking them if they wanted their regular drink. The ages inside ranged from late-20's to folks in their 70's or 80's. It is a small place, which isn't a bad thing. The atmosphere makes you feel more like you're having dinner at a friend's then eating at a restaurant (minus the servers in white jackets).
The food here was great. We sampled pizza, baby octopus, tiramisu, pistachio cake, espresso, wine and a number of their pastas. The pastas tasted fresh. My ragout was very well done.
All in all I'd go back here again without hesitation."

"I've been there a few times, and while the menu offers great selections, I now go for the daily specials. They're consistently good and quite creative."

"Have been a regular for awhile now, food is great, but now getting relatively expensive, especially the shrinking portion sizes of the starters, $14 to 15 for a thimble sized portion of eggplant stuffed with burrata cheese swimming like a minnow in red ocean of tomato sauce is getting to be a bit too precious for what has been a neighborhood gem!"

"For a reliably excellent, delightful dinner in a cozy brick-walled space on 1st Ave near the Queensborough Bridge, Tiella is a true "Neighborhood Gem". Always a warm welcome and friendly, professional service which allows the unpretentious and always fresh and tasty food take the fore. Thanks Tiella for being a great go-to place for consistently terrific meals."

"This was the second time I was to Tiella - the food is "out of this world" - the service was also great - friendly waitress for 2nd time in a row - wish the bread wasn't so good because you can't stop eating it. I had their Dorado encrusted with potato and it was so exquisite. My husband had their short ribs for the 2nd time and they were awesome - great place to dine for not outrageous NYC prices."
