Bistro Campagne
Bistro Campagne is a warm and friendly neighborhood restaurant in the tradition of a true French bistro. From the beginning, Bistro Campagne has strived to capture and express that ephemeral quality found in favorite small neighborhood bistros in Paris and rural France: the sense of welcome, ease, fun conversation & and of course excellent food. The setting is a charming blend of prairie-inspired decor and lively Gallic spirit. It is the food, however, that is at the heart of a great bistro, and Chef Michael Altenberg offers a seasonally changing menu of classic bistro fare that is based on the best ingredients he can find. His commitment to organic agriculture leads him to seek products from local organic farmers throughout our Midwestern growing season, and even from organic farms on the west coast throughout the winter. Bistro Campagne is committed to the use of organic food products and strongly supports the sustainable, low impact agriculture movement.

"Had a great brunch with my mom who has dementia. Our server was cheerful, helpful and patient. She was not flustered or put off. The food was delicious and prompt. The table was in a window with sun streaming in, overlooking the outdoor patio. Pleasant experience all around."

"We three were marking a special occasion and could not have picked a more appropriate dining spot. Our serving of Moules à la Bière, mussels in Belgian ale, was the best in memory, with delicious bread to sop up all the liquids in the bowl. Two of us shared the Bistro Burger featuring Black Earth beef, every bite of which we savored, as we did the fried onions. The third person had the Poulet Rôti Forestière, which was more than she could finish and a dish she could not stop raving about, even after departing the restaurant. The meal was indeed as special as was the occasion."

"This was our 4th visit. This time to celebrate our 46th anniversary.They never disapoint. The food and service are top notch. Had the Strudel and the Pate plate for startersa. My wife loves their chicken specialty and I had the pork chop this time. Both done perfectly. Love this place.
Interestingly, while we were there celebrating our 46th, a young couple at the table next to us, got up, went outside in the garden and he dropped to his knee and proposed. She accepted and both seemed quite happy. Good luck to them."

"This has been our go-to restaurant for celebrations - birthday, anniversary, etc. While still very good, it somehow didn't live up to our expectations. The menu didn't excite us as it used to; the party at the next table (extremely close) was loud and seemed to deter our own conversations. The service was great and lived up to its usual way of making us feel welcome."

"We had a great bottle of wine that was on special. We were reluctant because we weren't sure we could drink the whole bottle. The waitress said that they could re-cork and send us home with the bottle, which they did. Lovely experience. Still one of my favorite special event restaurants."

"Very tasty. Ambiance was perfect for our 4 year anniversary. Staff was very friendly and kind. The food was delicious. Can't complain. I wish I was there when it was warmer to enjoy the beautiful patio!! My only suggestion: don't feel like you have to eat everything. It's ok to take some food home. My fiance and my stomachs were a bit "urpy" due to the buttery, garlic and general richness of the food. Don't be bashful about taking home a doggie bag. You might regret it if you don't!"

"I hang out in Lincoln Square all the time and somehow JUST discovered this place. I love it! The food was incredible and the interior was extremely charming. Its great for groups and can be very romantic for dates. I can't wait till it gets warmer so I can go bad and sit on their adorable patio."

"We had a terrific, albeit early, meal - five of us - before a concert at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Patrick, our EXCELLENT server, knew of our time constraints and was exceptional at keeping everyone on time. He was also accommodating in a split-check request. Our meals all came as ordered and what my husband and I shared was terrific! An octopus appetizer, a quinoa and eggplant entree salad and the wonderful "madame" ham and cheese with egg sandwich. YUM! The bartender was wonderfully adept at a couple of cocktails; what could be better. Merci!!"

"We went out for our 34th anniversary on a cold Sunday night. I had roast chicken with mushroom ragout and crisp fried onions. Chicken was super. Onions and mushrooms were also tasty though the onions added a little heaviness to the dish after a few bites. My wife had a pork chop w. accompaniments - she also enjoyed hers. Opener of parsnip soup was nice if unspectacular. We each has a pot au creme for dessert. Oh man, that was so good. I had the recommended wine pairing with the dessert and it was perfect. Very friendly service and of course nice neighborhood in Lincoln Square, a stone's throw from Old Town School."

"This is a really special place that we love to go to when visiting our daughter in the Lincoln Square area. Amazingly prepared food, great wine list with suggested pairings, and diligent service, right down to scraping the breadcrumbs off of the tablecloth! Definitely recommend this to foodies. Make sure to make reservations at least a few days ahead. We like the intimate ambience and the fact that you can dress up or not. We celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary in very casual clothes, and were still treated like VIPs."

"Always a favorite spot. Only disappointment was that we love their duck breast, and their brussel sprouts. Both are still on the website for the regular menu, but alas were now off the menu in reality. Our taste buds were all psyched for these favorites, but alas, no longer on the menu. Very sad. The excellent waitress tried to help us over our disappointment with some very tasty duck croquettes, but we were still sad.
Amazing mac & cheese in french style and the chicken is also lovely. I had the beef bourguignon special, which was delicious, but a little light on the beef. Great crusty french bread to start. We'll be back, but will call way ahead to see if we can order the duck in advance. Love sitting in the garden on warm days!"

"A little out of the way for someone visiting downtown Chicago but worth the effort to get there. It reminded me of sitting in a very charming French bistro in France. Nice menu and a small but reasonably priced wine list. Service was very very good as was the food."

"I have never been so disappointed with Bistro Campagne. My partner and I have frequent this restaurant over the past 8 years. We dined on New Year's Eve 2012, and just recently entertained some special guest for brunch. The food and service were lackluster both times. I was very embarrassed at brunch since our guest have never dined in Lincoln Square. Campagne verified my reservation just the day before and when we arrived the place was half empty and our 4 top table was not ready-they had to break down the leaves of a circle top table. They ran out of quiche, the benedict lacked flavor, the potatoes were undercooked. The food was delivered not knowing who ordered what, and ordering a piece of bread became too complicated."

"I have been going to Bistro Campagne for years and have always had a good meal. This last visit completely turned me off. Except for the mussel appetizer, the food ranged from mediocre to bad. There were four of us; two of us had the same entree, the boeuf bourguignon, which was heavy, with overcooked pappardelle and no subtlety of flavor. The other two entrees were either overcooked, the leg of lamb or undercooked, the hanger steak.
I am very sad because I have always loved this place. Perhaps it was a bad night. I will give it another chance"

"Another wonderful evening at Bistro Campagne. We had a charming server who was helpful with wine selection. He had just the right touch of friendly attention without smarminess. The food was terrific. The roast chicken is a must have for very visit as far as I am concerned but I hear the special preparation of the mackerel was outstanding.
This is such a special restaurant. It always makes us feel welcomed. The quiet cottage feel is so charming. This is an unpretentious place to enjoy spectacular meals."

"We shared a salade lyonnaise and dessert, both of which were very good. I had the hangar steak, which was wonderful. My friend had the cassoulet and was dissappointed. He said it did not have a lot of flavor. I love this place, but wish my friend had had a better experience, because I think the kitchen is very good."

"We found the food good but not great. My Poulet (with onion rings) all too salty. My partner's Boeuf Bourguignon not among the better one's we've had (too smokey tasting, and where were the pearl onions?). Very nice and professional wait staff, however. And attractive interior."

"I had forgotten what a great place this is! The food is terrific, the service attentive, but maybe the most stunning aspect of the place is that it is so delightfully quiet. One can talk to one's companions. Talk. Not shout, even with every table full. All while enjoying truly delicious French-inspired food, great drinks, and wonderful wine."

"This was my first time at this restaurant and I was very disappointed. The service and ambiance of the restaurant were fine, nothing extraordinary, but no complaints. The food, however, was poorly prepared, uninspired and flavorless. I went here based on all the positive reviews I read online (Yelp and Urbanspoon) and had high expectations. I'm not sure what those reviews were based on but this was one of the worst meals I've had since moving to Chicago last September. I won't be back.
In addition, the only time available to me was 10:00pm on a Friday night. I booked that time, but when I arrived at the restaurant, it was obviious to me that there were many open tables that had been available for quite awhile"
