"We have been to Spotted Donkey several times and always considered it a favorite. This time, we were not as thrilled. The chips/salsa included "house fried' corn tortillas which did not appear/taste homemade/fresh. The roasted tomato salsa looked/tasted like ketchup. The flour and corn tortillas, with our entrees, looked/tasted store-bought, and they were neither warm nor homemade. They appeared/tasted like tortillas from a local food store.
On the brighter side, the portions sizes are large and satisfying, and the shrimp signature tacos are consistently excellent. The service was terrific, as is the location of the restaurant and the atmosphere.
Just please give us homemade and fresh chips and flour/corn tortillas! We'll try again!"

"We live in the area and have been to the Spotted Donkey many times. Never a time when the food wasn't delicicious and abundant. Not sure how some people can eat there and criticize anything....there isn't a thing we could ever say negative about this place. The variety of the menu alone should please everyone. Plan on taking some home but I can tell you that your leftovers are just as good the next day!"

"This is a great place for lunch... the food always exceeds our expectations. We went on a Sunday when there was music in the courtyard... so we had the best of both worlds... we sat outside under an umbrella and enjoyed the food and the music. Great onion rings. "We are local &!have lived in the area for 15 years. Their food quality has gone downhill again. Cheaper & smaller cut of meat & bland sauces. w which seems to happen as soon as the busy winter season ends. We forgot its April now so they cut corners by hiring less experienced chef & lower quality food. Recommend wait to go back until Late September then restaurant gets better for season"

"Great Mexican food. While a bit on the pricy side the Spotted Donkey provides some outstanding food. We went for lunch and I had the chicken enchaladas which were perfect. Try the combination red and green sauce. My friend had a salad which he stated was large and tasty. They offer a few unique dishes that all looked good. I will definitely return."

"I am not a great fan of Mexican food, subscribing to the Top Gear view (Brits will know what I am talking about) but the food here is of a different class to anywhere else I have been.
We take friends here when they visit us in Arizona and everyone enjoys it.
The cocktails are great - try the Mezcal Mule which comes in a metal cup with Russian lettering on (I wanted to sneak mine home), the staff are friendly and efficient and this place is always buzzing lunch and dinner."

"I called/left a message to advise we would be late for our reservation. When we arrived at the restautant, I was told they gave away our reservation as a 'no show'. I shared with the hostess, I tried calling and left a message....her response "can't you see how busy we are, we do not have time to answer a phone/pick up a message". We were advised it would a 40-60 minute wait. The hostess was rude and will not return to that restaurant...obviously by her response, they are so busy, additional customers were not that important."

"Super fish tacos and guacamole, only thing missing was the free chips 'n salsa when you arrive (you have to pay for chips 'n salsa or chips 'n guacamole if you want some). This was an immediate turn off as so many other good Mexican restaurants offer chips 'n salsa for free. The margaritas were awesome, really smooth."

"We love this restaurant. We're snowbirds and each year we head there as fast as possible, once we arrive, for our favorite dishes. "We love the Spotted Donkey and go there a lot. Have yet to have a bad meal there, always consistently good. The bartenders make wonderful drinks, especially margueritas and will take special orders with care. Food likewise is exceptional. Donkey chopped salad, burgers and the special of the night is what we had, fish tacos. Wonderful. We like everything about the Donkey, from atmosphere to food always a great combination for a wonderful time"

Food was more like bar food. Fish tacos appeared to be comprised of frozen, machine made talapia. OK food, but really nothing spectacular, more along the lines of

"Excellent Mexican food if you don't want the "traditional" Tex-Mex that is glopped with cheeses and bad sauces. This is the only place we'll eat Mexican food in North Scottsdale. Every other place that claims to serve excellent Mexican pales in comparison."

"Four of us had a good meal -- fish tacos were especially tasty (meatloaf was a bit bland). Service was attentive without being overly so. Comfortable seating, but noise level was high enough that we noticed making an effort to be heard around the table (which, of course, added to the noise level)."
