The Walnut Room - Chicago Reviews List

The Walnut Room - Chicago

The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy's on State Street the Walnut Room is the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. With Circassian wood paneling imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers, the 17,000 square foot dining room is both elegant and comfortable. Conveniently located in the heart of the Chicago theatre district the Walnut Room is an excellent choice to take a break from shopping or for a meal and a glass of wine before the show. And don't forget about the Wine Bar at the Walnut Room. Opened in November of 2007, the Wine Bar features a small plate menu as well as more than 20 wines by the glass. After all, in our store, we have been feeding the shopping tradition since 1905.
Enjoy a classic Mrs. Herring's Chicken Pot Pie, French onion soup, or choose from the more contemporary menu offerings created by some of the country's best known chefs as members of the Macy's Culinary Council.

"This was our first visit to te Walnut Room and I was afraid to go there off-season since everyone seems to visit during the Holidays. We were pleasantly surprised with a beautiful brunch featuring their specialties like Chicken Pot Pie and much, much more. Jesus our waiter was superb!"

"I would like to say that I never had a bad meal at the walnut room. Whenever I am in the Loop,I have to stop by for Mrs. Herrings Chicken Pot Pie. The menu has alot of options to choose from, and they are all delicious..The staff is great and friendly.. I can see why they have been in business for over 100 years."

"A couple of times a year I return to what was MF&C to enjoy some of the old favorites that still are available on the Menu. It's bittersweet in many ways as the staff has changed so much in the way they approach the guests. The food is still good and the ambiance more of a tea room experience than a restaurant but that has always been part of its charm. State Street is a long way from being the great street it once had been."

"Don't really know why I am writing this. The room is always enjoyable and convenient for theater and shopping. The food is okay to good. The service is always poor. That about sums it up. We go back because it is there. We always leave irritated that we have waited through this again."

"Every trip to Chicago requires a visit to the Walnut Room. It's become a family tradition that we hope to continue for several years! A "must" is a visit over the holidays to lunch beside the magnificent Marshall Fields (Now Macy's) Christmas tree, and to let the fairies sprinkle "fairy dust" to grant the children's wishes."

"This was our first time to Walnut Room to eat; lived in Chicago 22 years. It was a disappointment. Food is average and no TLC to the restaurant ambiance. Arrived early and read about all the great things in Marshall Field's history, but then expectations dashed. Macy's has definitely ruined this restaurant. About $100,000 from Macy's CEO salary would go a long way to restoring restaurant to prior glory and pride. I'm sure he would not miss that money and it would be well spent.
Plenty of other great Chicago restaurants to go and eat."

"The Walnut Room is always a favorite spot at Christmas, but it's also great for lunch, tea, or meeting friends for dinner after work. I like the Walnut Room's traditional food - friends are likely to try changing specials. Prices, thankfully, are reasonable. Memories rush over me every time I'm there."

"Great location, on the 7th floor of Macy's on State street. Easy to find if you are trying to have a lunch date with co-workers if you work nearby or with out of town friends staying downtown area. The restaurant offers traditional sandwiches, soups and salads, not expensive at all, even better than the food court pricing. The waiter is very friendly, seems to know to leave us alone. My co-worker and I ordered salad and soup combo, light and tasty, presentation looks great too. Would love to go back again."

"Menu is seriously out of date. Salads were made with old lettuce. "Special" of the day did not live up to it's name -- salmon was overcooked and dry and not even hot when brought to the table. Surrounding salad had no flavor or interest. Nasty greasy tortilla under all. Just terrible."

"I love the Walnut Room, and have been going there since before I can remember. This was the second visit for my guest, and I chose the location because we wanted to have a conversation and not have to shout. The food, while usually great, was not up to previous visits -- the waiter did tell us they are in the process of changing up the menu. They had a wine special, which we both took advantage of, and the dessert was incredible (white chocolate bread pudding)."

"This restaurant was chosen because it is within a block of the Chicago Theater and we had show tickets. It was so convenient with parking right across the street. It was a great way to begin the evening - a moderately priced, yet great meal in the historic Marshall Fields (now Macys) building. The elevator ride to the 7th floor restaurant takes you back in time."

"We were looking for a place to eat on a Saturday night before going to a dance show at the Harris Theater. The prices were extremely reasonable.
My meal was outstanding. I had the meat loaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. It was presented beautifully and was delicious. My friend was very happy to find an Argentinian wine on the wine list that she had just tasted while in Argentina. She had the cod fish special and was equally impressed. The service was a bit slow but the Walnut Room has a history and ambiance of its own since it is located in Macy's which was formerly Marshall Fields.

"It was a great experience in a totally historic setting. The food was great, the service - by Jesus - was classy but the kitchen was ever so slow. After 45 minutes we were still with only bread and wine. The waiter apologized as the restaurant was not busy at all."

"I had been wanting to go to the Walnut room for some time because I heard so much about it. Well, the ambiance was great. It is well lit and has a comfortable atmosphere. The food was also very good -- I had the Roasted Salmon. The only thing I was a bit disappointed about was the service. Although, our server was nice I think he had too many tables to wait. We sat for more than 10 minutes before we were even approached with menus. Then our bread and water arrived several minutes later. Our server forgot that we had requested more bread with our soup and salad although it arrived when we were finishing up and lastly I was celebrating my birthday on that day and wasn't even approached about dessert. Overall, it was descent."

"We visited for a Sunday lunch and it recofirmed what I have noticed over the last year or so--sadly, the Walnut Room is not the great place it once was. Staff were arguing with each other and seemed very short-handed, food was not as nicely presented as it used to be. Having said this, the Walnut Room is still not a bad place, especially if you are shopping on State Street--prices are fair, nice wine list and the special menu always has an interesting option or two."

"On what has now become a monthly trek to the Walnut Room, my party and I enjoyed a bottle of Moet & Chandon champagne (the real deal, not sparkling wine, which we also like) -- at half price! What a treat!! The rest of the meal -- salmon for two, rockfish for two - and desserts were just lovely. Service is attentive, efficient, and a little whimsical. No surly waiters here to deflate the impact of a lovely traditional space, great view, and classical music as accompaniment."

"We were in Chicago for a romantic weekend and what better way to cap-off the weekend than a visit to the State Street Marshall Fields? The Walnut room was what we remembered (even if it was February and the Christmas Tree was long gone). The Chicken Pot Pie is still just as good as we remembered too. Always a special place for a romantic meal."

"Food was excellent, view was great, service was subpar. The waitress didn't have many tables so I'm not sure what took so long to get our food. I know there was a group of 55 people that were going to see Book of Mormon that got sat down ahead of us. We, also, were going to see Book of Mormon after lunch that day. We had to order our dessert when our meal came to make sure we received our food in time before the show started. I will go back but not for a while. I would like to have better service, next time."
