A Louisville landmark since 1923, with English Renaissance architecture and Southern grace. The English Grill is the Brown Hotel's AAA Four Diamond signature dining room serving American cuisine with seasonal and regional influences.
"This is a pretty fancy place, not cheap, but worth the experience. It very quiet and romantic for us, but we went fairly late on a Tuesday night.
The cocktails were made perfectly. The appetizer of Gnocchi was delicious, and of course, their famous Hot Brown was amazing. I couldn't put my fork down. My girlfriend ordered a Hot Brown from a brewery in downtown Louisville the night before, so I tried it, and there was no comparison.
The service was great as well. The server seemed a little short with us at first, but as the night went on, he opened up and chatted our ear off and gave us our dessert on the house. The bus boy was very friendly too. Highly recommend this place."

"Don't miss this experience! It was the dining highlight of our Derby trip! We landed in Louisville and headed straight to the Brown Hotel. Although we were delayed by parade traffic they held our reservation until 9:30PM! We were amazed by the hospitality- the hostess was so obliging and our waiter was polished and a pro! We met the General Manager of the hotel and The young new chef at the English Grill gave us a tour of his kitchen and served us herbs from his own organic farm. Cuisine: the meal was one of the best I have ever eaten! Simply a great, world-class dining experience."

"I surprised my wife with a trip to the Kentucky Derby. It was the first time we had been there. After doing a little homework, I made reservations on line at The English Grill. Of course, Derby Day was booked but Thursday was available, so we took it. Everything was perfect. The beet salad, the pork chop, the salmon, the flaming chocolate dessert, the service- all spectacular. Even the reservation person was extremely helpful on how to get there, where to park and how best to fight the traffic. The parade finished at 7:00 and dinner at The Brown immediately following. Life is good."

"We had a fabulous time at the English Grill. We had initially intended to have the famous Kentucky Hot Brown where it was invented, but found they were having a Derby tasting menu preview with wine pairings. We couldn't resist after the server showed us the menu. It was outstanding. Since we visited during the start of the Derby celebration, it was probably a special time for tasting and not something that would be occurring often."

"Overall we enjoyed the experience, with one exception. The menu and food were good, if perhaps not great for the price. The decor and ambiance were very good. The location was perfect. The service was generally prompt, with the right amount of attention paid without being intrusive. The only real drawback was our waiter, who decided, on his own, to switch the wine we were drinking. My wife had chosen a wine she liked. I later asked for the same, and she asked for a refill. When the wine came, she said it tasted different. When we pushed the waiter on it, he admitted he had given us a different wine that he liked better, and was unapologetic about it. He gave us a price break, but should have suggested the wine, not imposed it."

"Impeccable service. It is good to know that there is still fine dining that lives up to the old standards. The atmosphere was eloquent but not over done. The food was incredible! The beet and goat cheese salad was outstanding as ell as the salmon and sea bass. The Brown hotel has a real gem with the English Grill! This was a great dining experience!!"

"The food is so good!!!! The only thing I didn't like was the crepe dessert. But the dinner and appetizer FAR made the meal worth it. That and along with the server Kenneth. It was great being pampered!!"

"Excellent bar and bourbon list. Soup was excellent, entree was good but not great. Maitre d and Manager were very friendly and offered amenities. Server didn't come back to check on food but one time. Great bar for a bourbon drinker. Every other upscale restaurant I've been to in Louisville has much better food than this one."

"We were celebrating a birthday and an anniversary. We were surprised with two beautiful flaming desserts that we all enjoyed and which made the occasion a memorable one. Our waiter, Phil, was attentive and helpful and made sure we had whatever we wanted!"

"Wy wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and evening. We had our wedding reception in the Crystal Ballroom in the same hotel, so it was an ideal place for our early Valentine's Day dinner. Very fine dining, but relaxed at the same time. Perfect!"

"I took my husband to the English Grill for his 50th birthday. Being one of the nicest restaurants in town, I had high hopes. Unfortunatley, the restaurant did not live up to expectations. They overcooked my filet -- TWICE -- then finally served me half an hour later, after my husband had entirely finished his meal. Further, for such an elegant venue, the wait staff was surprisingly casual and loud with the guests. I could hear conversations across the room. Finally, our waiter talked our ear off, killing an intimate special occasion for my husband and I. I won't be back."

"Food was pretty good overall. Service was a little slow and waiter seemed disinterested but overall an enjoyable meal. Loved the hot brown but beef ribs were somewhat lacking in salt and flavor. Appetizers and salads were yummy. We did not have room for desserts at the end of the meal but the options sounded good, although not a lot of explanation about them, just names."

"Was disappointed with our server at the end of the night when our checks all got messed up. Our meal ended up on my sister's bill and we ended up paying for part of theirs and the waitress was supposed to fix it and bring the new bill back. She never brought it back. Then she came and asked my husband for our credit card and was gone forever with our card and we never got to see the new bill. When our receipt came back it was wrong but we had waited so long by that time we needed to go. Our 89 year old mother was really getting tired and we needed to get her home."

"The quality of the food has gone down and the lack of wait staff made it worse. This was my last visit. With the hotel full it appeared that that they did not plan for walk in traffic."

"Very considerate, if slightly overbearing service. Lots of dark wood and horse paintings. Food was mostly good, especially the curried butternut squash soup and quinoa-brussel sprout accompaniment to the grouper. However, the curried tofu "steak" was blander and softer textured than nearly all other tofu preparations I've tasted."

"We had a reservation, when we arrived there wasn't a host/hostess in sight. We waited 10 minutes until we were greeted. Once inside, service was good!
Hot brown was great (when at the brown, eat the hot brown)."
