Mestizo is the creation of Chef Aarón Sánchez.
The name, Mestizo, represents the melting pot of
cultures that defines Mexico and its people. From
the Native Americans, to the Spanish and Latin
American influences, these cultures define the
personality of the country and translate into the
cuisine. All Mexican cuisine can be traced back
to the Yucatan, Pueblo or the Veracruz regions and
to the ingredients that are indigenous to these
areas. Through the masterful combination of these
ingredients, Aarón Sánchez uses his classic culinary training to create recipes that define a menu of bold flavors that set a new standard in Mexican cuisine. Using only the freshest and sustainable ingredients, Aarón's food will delight the palate and create a true appreciation of the flavors of Mexico. "Overall had a good experience. The restaurant is very difficult to find. Describing the restaurant as being at Park Place isn't very helpful since there is construction going on. Please consider better signage."

"My wife, children and I dined at Mestizo's the day before Mother's Day. The chilaquiles and pork belly tacos were outstanding! And the service was great, as we've come to expect. However, our server was TOO efficient this time. She promptly refilled our drinks (water, tea, lemonade), was friendly without being smothering, and quickly corrected a small error in our order. But she also collected our plates too quickly--and (at least twice) without asking. Fortunately, no one at our table had their heart set on taking home the remnants of the chilaquiles that disappeared while my wife was in the ladies' room and I was distracted with the kids. This is a minor issue in the end; we will be back!"

"I had heard from a friend about the tacos at Mestizo, and had previously driven by it , we finally decided to pull the trigger and set up a reservation. We were not disappointed. We ordered the guacamole as an appetizer, I had the skirt steak tacos and my wife had the pork belly tacos. The guacamole was very good although a little steep for the price. The tacos on the other hand, were amazingly delicious. I inhaled mine very quickly, and my wife soon followed suit. We had a few drinks, and if it had not been happy hour where the specialty drinks were half price, we probably would not have. I had the sangria, my wife had a mojito, and a margarita. Overall, I loved the food, and will return for it to satisfy my taco addiction."

"I've been going to Mestizo almost weekly for the last 6 months and the service has definitely gone WAY DOWN!
Two weeks ago, I was seated and our hostess told us that they had another reservation in an hour so we need to be done by then. WHAT?????????
This most recent visit, we waited almost 10 minutes before our server took our drink order and waited over 20 minutes for our drinks - that is almost 30 minutes after we sat down before we got our first drinks.
I've been telling people that Mestizo was my favorite place, but no longer. I think I'm done there."

"This was our first time at Mestizo. After watching Aaron' on Chopped we just had to try it out. Our server (Bailey) was very knowledgeable and had some great recommendations and she always had a smile on her face. Something you don't see often times at a restaurant. The food arrived quite fast. The quality, appearance, taste, temperature and portion sizes were excellent. The drinks we had were very good. To top it off the dessert was great! And the highlight of the evening for my wife was seeing Aaron' and getting her picture taken with him. It was nice to see the man himself making the rounds and talking with the diners. And it appeared that he has great respect from his employees! We are spreading the word."

"We started with the Tres Salsas & Chips. The grilled pineapple & the avocado tomatillo salsas were fantastic. The third should be described as "fire in a bowl". The first bowl of chips was a bit greasy, the second was better. We then tried the cucumber, jicama and mango appetizer. Served sliced into sticks then tossed with lime juice and sprinkled with a chili powder, the dish is extremely light and refreshing. We would have enjoyed it after having our entrees in lieu of a standard dessert item. We then had the chile rellenos and the seafood paella fritters. Both were excellent. Our server was excellent and made the experience great."

"Mestizo was a good restaurant. I sort of had my hopes up that it would be fantastic. It was good, not fantastic. The food was good and moderately priced. Guacamole was good but not worth the $9. I had the fish tacos and my husband had the lamb enchiladas. The enchiladas were very very good (I will order these next time) - fish tacos were good but the tortillas were a little oily and the fish was overdone- good flavor though. Drinks were good but we were slow to get refills on our margaritas. I will go back."

"The food at Mestizo is top notch. But I must say that the service is HORRIBLE. This is about the 6th time I have dined there and so not impressed. We had a reservation but waited over 3O minutes for drinks to come and for the waitress to take our order. When we brought this to her attention she said the bar and kitchen were very backed up but then walked away in the middle of taking orders to take care of something else and we had to wave her back to our table. In addition our second glasses of wine did not come until after the meal. For such great food you'd think the service would be a little better!"

"This is the best gourmet Mexican food and most authentic that I've seen. We had Kelly as our server and she was excellent. I recommend asking for her. They have different happy hours every day which run from around 5-7 and then again after 9 or 10. They also have a "skinny" (not skinny girl) margarita which is supposedly under 100 calories (hard to believe). I started out with the Lobster Ceviche which had many large chunks of tail meat lobster with just the right amount of cilantro, onions and bathed in a passion fruit sauce. The chips and salsa are homemade and quite different. My main course was the fresh fish which was Barramundi. At a price of $16, couldn't be beaten for the quality of this meal."

"I thought upscale Hispanic food when I saw the menu. I have been from Monterey,Mexico to Sonora to deep down the west coast. Did not recognize most of the flavors. Some food flavors were very odd and some were okay. Nothing was exceptional. Chips seemed stale to me. Mostly so-so meal for $60.00 per couple."

"We were greatly surprized to learn that Mestizo had a good gluten-free menu. Everything was great with dinner. The only problem was that our table was not ready at the time of our reservation, so he asked us to go to the bar and sit for a few minutes. After 30 minutes of waiting, I went to the hostto see how much further delay. He told me that he forgot about me."

"I travel to the Kansas City area a lot and this is my favorite place by far!! Always a great experience and I try something new most of the time. A hidden gem that surpasses others that are in places like the plaza! I take my KC friends here and they love it too."

"This was our second visit to Mestizo. Our first was right after it opened, and we were unimpressed. We thought it would be worth another shot. It was not.
PROS:
1. The food was just fine. The drinks were tasty, but pricy.
2. The restaurant had no problem accommodating a time constraint.
3. The space is attractive.
CONS:
1. A "celebrity chef-inspired menu" (this was beaten into our heads) is supposed to make us open our wallets and ignore our tastebuds.
2. We were constantly reminded that Mestizo does EVERYTHING better than anyone else in this cowtown (my words, their sentiment).
3. Our server was condescending. He tried too hard to upsell to more expensive dishes despite diners' actual desires.
PROS:

"Mestizo has a great atmosphere and our waiter was very helpful and responsive. The chips and salsa were delicious. We also tried the cactus steaks as an appetizer. Really good with the dip. We also tried the banana chips, which I wasn't crazy about. For dinner I ordered the tostadas with lump crab meat and the shrimp and scallop ceviche. I didn't realize both items were served cold so I wish I had ordered a warm dish on a cold February evening. My husband had the lamb enchilada, which he enjoyed. I'd like to go back again to try something else on the menu. Comfortable atmosphere that would be fun to return to with friends."

"Very interesting Mexican fusion type restaurant. Certainly not the typical Tex-Mex cheesy dining experience, in other words very refreshing. The sauces were very delicate and interesting. We especially liked the plantain appetizer. The restaurant is gorgeous. I indicated the view is scenic because you can see the ice skaters out on the rink. They also have what appears to be a very nice patio. This is a nice addition to Park Place, which is a growing upscale development in Leawood. Everything we sampled was well prepared, tasty and innovative."

"We went on a Saturday evening and were sat about 25 minutes after our reservation. We bellied up to the bar, so that was not an issue. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. The menu offers more of a traditional upscale fare that you won't find at most area Mexican restaurants. The cactus app was wonderful. It was my first experience with pork cheeks and definitely won't be my last. Great lively atmosphere that is also good for a late night snack and cocktails. We have already been there a few times and will definitely be returning."
