Restaurant Reviews for Vie

Vie reservations Vie

4471 Lawn Ave
Western Springs, IL 60558

The first restaurant in Western Springs to serve liquor since prohibition, Vie offers guests the opportunity to experience urban fine dining in a warm, relaxed village setting. Conveniently located steps from the Metra station, Vie attracts food-conscious diners from the entire Chicagoland area. Guests will find sanctuary in the intimate, gracious dining room housed in a two-story red brick building in the center of Norman Rockwell’s Americana. Chef Virant’s cuisine reflects the seasons, local harvests and the world becoming a smaller place. While the menu celebrates artisanal foods and local family farms, it also takes advantage of the increased availability of specialty foods from across the globe. Vie features Seasonal Contemporary American cuisine inspired by Western European cultures and rustic fare. Virant elevates familiar dishes by relying on the simplicity of a few, high-quality ingredients.

"We enjoyed dining at Vie immensely. The menu was creative and the food amazing. Surprised my the casual atmosphere but guess we did not check in advance. Our waiter, who had been with Vie for six years, was terrific and extremely knowledgeable. Would highly recommend."

Review 2 for Vie

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Went to Family dinner night. Great deal for mom and dad and for the kids - by the time you add drinks (even non-alch) and dessert it is not exactly cheap. But for this caliber restaurant a great value. The staff is by and large very friendly though you can tell they are aware their tickets and tips will be less, bus service great. All in all a great way to dine with kids in a nice place. Limited chocies for adults so if picky might be better to regular night. Kids menu Grilled cheese and Chicken Tenders - interestingly the tenders are almost too crunchy - noticed this the first time we went. Might benefit from a third choice. THe only knock is they might want to pick up the pace of service as depending on kid age."

Review 6 for Vie

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Very disappointing! we had heard good things about the restaurant so we went with friends only to be slightly embarrassed by the outcome. Our server was wonderful, she tried very hard to make up for the shortcomings of two very "can't be bothered" bartenders, and food not prepared ask ordered. Portions are ridiculously small, and my husbands dinner looked like something of the pork and beans nature with very little meat. Will not be going back."

"The Special Valentines Menu was Outstanding. The seven course menu was paced to provide a relaxing dinner without waiting too long between courses even given the large crowd on the Saturday night. The wine pairing was excellent with several small unknown (at least to me) wineries. The food sourced form the local farms help provide a memorable dinner."

Review 11 for Vie

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Excellent find in the southwest suburbs. It's so nice to find a restaurant of such caliber in the suburbs. The menu is elegant and varied at the same time. The food was served to perfection and the service was excellent. Expensive, but not pretentious, and well worth it. We are fans of sustainable food as well as locally grown and seasonal products, so this restaurant gets a total thumbs up for us."

Review 13 for Vie

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Considering the fact that Vie was recently named to Gayot's top 40 and that it took us 1:30 to get there from Chicago I had high expectations - expectations that were absolutely met by nearly everything that graced our plate. What was not top notch, however, was the service - dishes went unexplained, coffee and water sat unfilled for stretches of time, more bread required a request, and the burger my Aunt had wanted was not available even though it was on the menu and we were not informed of its "limited availability." In addition to this, while we watched one table indulge on a tasting menu we were never offered one - not at all.....as though our presence and money weren't as good as that of others."

"The ambience of the resturaunt was amazing, and I went to Vie to propose to my fiancee and was very pleased with the decor, and lighting. The staff was very receptive, kind, and helpful in my proposal. My waitress even got pictures with my camera of the moment I proposed so my fiancee could have them to cherish. Overall the food, ambience, and hospitality of Vie was perfect for my romantic occassion. "This was our first time at Vie. For Valentines day they had a special 5 course meal with optional wine pairings. The food was inventive, well plated, and delicious. "My wife and I enjoyed an excellent dinner at Vie. The service was outstanding, and the food was on par with the best restaurants in Chicago. I loved the pan-roasted beet salad, and my wife raved over the chowder. My wood-grilled steak and crispy slow cooked chuck made a great combination. I can't wait to return to try some of the other menu choices. Vie is a gem of a restaurant!"

Review 20 for Vie

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"My husband and I celebrated Valentine's Day eve at Vie. We had not been there since our wedding anniversary last year. But it was an excellent experience again, as always. We usually have an earlier reservation so this time we were surprised when it got crowded and noisy toward the end of our meal.

Service was a little slow and the waiter seemed a bit harried at times but that is to be expected with a holiday. Our preference is to go on quieter evenings.

There are few restaurants that you leave feeling like you have experienced something amazing but Vie is one of them and I am sure it will remain at the top of our short list of places to celebrate special occasions.

Review 21 for Vie

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"We went to Vie for the Sunday Super special menu with our Children. The pre-fix menu had only three entrees to chose from which were all breaded, fried or full of rich sauces. There wasn't anything on the menu that was prepared light, such as an entree salad or a fish choice. The special children's menu consisted of only two choices, grilled cheese or chicken nuggets which my 12 yr. old wanted neither and ordered off the adult menu. We thought the Sunday Super would be a good way to try Vie. I was completely disappointed with the menu and the entire experience especially for a fine dinning restaurant and will not be back."

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Enjoyed our evening, although the experience, and some of the dishes, fell short of expectations. The Sea Bass amuse bouche was a nice burst of flavor to start the evening. For "firsts" , the gnocchi were a touch under done, and not as flavorful as expected. The Scallops were lovely, with the smoked squash beautifully accenting the sweetness of the scallops, but one of the scallops was bit under cooked, and the granola added little to the dish. The beet salad lacked the sweetness I expected, but was a nice presentation. The arugala salad was nice, but we found a walnut shell. The soup of the evening had a rich prosciutto and parmesean broth, and the textures provided by the roasted squash and farro was interesting. For main dishes, the wood"

"So disappointed in our experience. I had been looking forward to this evening for well over a year ago. Vie has been on my list for so long, and we finally managed to plan a celebration evening for our anniversary. Food was mediocre. There was a preponderance of "smoky" tastes to many of the dishes which overwhelmed the other layers of flavor. Lamb entree was tough...not good quality at all. The dessert was disappointingly not even worth the calories. My turkey dish was a beautifully presented, but did not deliver on taste. Dry. Boring. Was it an off night?"

"We are never disappointed in our Vie experience. From the imaginative cocktails in the beginning to the complimentary sugar cookies at the end everything was perfect. I took a friend from out of town and he was very impressed with the ambiance, food, and service. We split an appetizer (gnocci) and house salad; he had the beef plate (delicious) and I had melt-in your mouth halibut--possibly the best fish dish I've ever tasted! We finished off with cake smothered in pumpkin ice cream. Needless to say, neither of us left hungry--which is often the case nowadays in upscale restaurants. While not inexpensive, you certainly get your money's worth at Vie. It's a perfect place for a special occassion."

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Great concept to highlight local, American food and produce. However, poorly executed. Meat dishes (e.g. elk) had too much going on sauce and flavour-wise. Fish (steelhead and halibut) were NOT swamped with various sauce flavours and were thus very good. Amuse gueule was excellent (spicy shrimp). Scented (implies something delicate) rice pudding dessert was awful - a solid mass of rice, nuts and marzipan. Highlight of the cheese platter was the mass of stodgy bread. Noise was the KO factor. On a table of six it was literally impossible to exchange words with a person at the other end of the table, which turned the experience into something similar to Bob Chinn's."

"From the time we arrived to this restaurant, until the time we left, my group felt like we were given exceptional treatment. The wait staff was attentive, but not overbearing. They were also vey knowledgable about the menu and wine list. The menu contained a variety of local ingredients, and seemed to offer something for everyone. All of the diners at our table raved about the textures and flavor combinations of their meals, and the meal was truly a feast for all of the senses.

By the time our meal was over, the bar was overflowing and the tables were full. Western Springs is luck to have this gem of a restaurant.

"We had an excellent meal at Vie on 12/5/09! My husband had an excellent serving of elk from Wisconsin and I had a delicious Walleye -- both done superbly! Executive Chef Paul Virant even stopped by our table to say hello -- just a wonderful evening -- thanks Vie for coming to the the western suburbs so we don't have to go downtown for an amazing meal!"

"We had seen Chef Paul on Iron Chef America, where he had loss by only one point. Planning a trip to Chicago had to include a visit to Vie. We had trouble driving to the restaurant (my fault), so we arrived an hour late. The Vie staff made up for my mistake by their outstanding service. Hostess seated us at a great table, and the server was just outstanding. Our appetizers were incredible, salad was perfect, entrees were unbelievable tasty. Each bite of our entire meal was a pleasant experience for the taste buds. Before the entry was served, Chef Paul came out and spoke with us for about 10 minutes. He sent out a dessert cheese tray of us, on the house. We even received a tour of the kitchen and storeroom. Vie is a must place to eat!"

"Amazing fine dining experience. I've been to several places that offer this type of high level culinary experience, but Vie is by far the most creative and delicious. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a special meal with an amazing selection of wines.

Be sure to take advantage of Tuesday when they currently offer no corkage on wines and also 1000 point reservations! A great way to experience their exceptional food and maximize your dollar. Of course, be sure to take a look at the wine list as well, they have an exceptional offering & it's worth the expense.

I'm planning on coming back for a special occasion for the tasting menu with wine pairings. Overall an all around great experience.
