The downtown hit-makers behind Scottish hot spots Highlands and Byron at The Surf Lodge set aside the tartan for industrial chic at WHITEHALL Bar + Kitchen. Chef Chris Rendell puts an upmarket twist on British classics. Gin enthusiasts will not be disappointed with the bar's artisanal selection of over 50 bottles of England's national spirit. WHITEHALL is opened for cocktails and dinner. The setting is also perfect for a variety of occasions from a quiet dinner in the intimate dining room to drinks at the bar or a gathering of friends for cocktails.
"Came here on Saturday night for dinner with friends. Thought the ambience up front was great, and the quieter dining area in the back worked well for dinner and conversation. Enjoyed the food - had the burger which was cooked perfectly. Enjoyed the meal, and would come back."

"Cute restaurant with great food. Originally went to try the highly reviewed brussel sprouts dish but they were out of season. Got the asparagus instead, along with a green salad and the sea trout dish. All were fabulous. Portions were on the smaller side but overall the experience was delicious. Great ambience. And the wine for $10 was not bad at all, which was surprising (since normally I see barberas for under $14 and usually expect them to be sub par -- sorry if that sounds snooty; it's more an unfortunate reflection of how overpriced good wines from italy are). I highly recommend this place!"

"I loved the lighting, exposed brick, and open feeling of the back dining room. Was seated before our reservation time! When we ordered a bottle of wine they didn't have, the sommelier promptly came over and recommended an excellent choice to replace the missing wine. Every morsel of food was great, especially the scallop appetizer with the cashew, Asian inspired relish. It took a few minutes for our server to come over after we were initially seated, but it seemed like she got 3 tables seated at the same time, and that was the only hitch in our service the whole evening. Very interesting dessert, not my favorite but I was glad to try something new (strawberry rhubarb meringue & mousse)! Will definitely come back and recommend to friends."

"The front room with the bar was raucous and packed when we arrived and left. A great energy for those who wanted a bar scene. But since we were there for dinner, I was pleased to be seated in the back where the noise level was appropriate for conversation. The server was nice and available when needed. The food was timely and delicious. My party had a leisurely dinner which I fear delayed the later reservations but we never felt rushed. So much so, we didn't even realize how long we had been there. Which I think is a testament to the service.
Overall, I believe there are 2 establishments in 1. The bar area was quite a scene but the dining area was comfortable and made for a delightful evening."

"Our food at Whitehall was delicious! We got there a bit early (7:15) so as the evening progressed it filled up and the energy improved. I would recommend it to friends for a casual but delicious meal."

"Drinks were exceptional (No. 4 & No. 11 were fantastic). Butternut Squash Salad was very refreshing and perfect to split for 2 people. I had the cheeseburger, which was a revelation. Friend had the chicken and she thought it was great. Also, the boozy brussel sprouts are quite tasty (boozy because they use scotch butter). Overall, a solid place with great service. Could definitely see myself going back here as a trusted, fall back option if I'm ever in West Village and unsure/unable to find a restaurant."

"We have dined here three times and have enjoyed our experience each time The menu is a mix of standard dishes prepared with an Aussie flair that makes them unique and tasty! (Was told that the chef is Australian) The front of the restaurant is a little louder and has a active bar while the back is more quiet with a warm and cozy feel. The wait staff is trained to express their personality and give excellent service"

"The best part by far was were the drinks. They were really the only remarkable bit. Everything else was pretty good, but given the prices, I wouldn't really recommend it for food."

"Bravo!!! What a meal. I was beginning to think that I am just way too picky. It is nice to fine a place that i can really rave about. We sat in the back room, which is a little bit quieter. The ambiance is very casual but cool. Do not miss the Lamb Chops. We had the Squid app, which was perfection. The fruit tart for desert was another homerun. Oh yes, do not forget to have a before dinner cocktail."

"My friend and I enjoyed Whitehall from the moment we walked in. The music was quite loud and we asked if they would lower it - they did, immediately. It wasn't very crowded when we got there, partly, because it was Easter. I suspect that on any other night it would have been noisier and more crowded (hence the "moderate" for noise level. The service was excellent, the food delicious and beautifully presented. Nice wine list, friendly but not overbearing staff. Definitely will go back."

"Great experience at Whitehall. The atmosphere is energetic and the decor is really clean and well done. Great location in the heart of the West Village. I thought the service was great and the staff was really attentive and friendly. The food was excellent as well. I wish they would experiment with more non gin based cocktails (I am a bourbon fan), but that is there trademark and I knew that going in. That being said, the gin based cocktails were great. Excellent time!"

"Whitehall was a solid surprise. Cocktails were well made, and boozy brussel sprouts were delicious - we couldn't stop eating them. The pork chop was slightly overcooked and dry in the middle, but tasty nonetheless. Overall, a positive experience."

"Not crowded but surprisingly loud. Service was mediocre- the server wasn't British, disappeared for large chunks of time, didn't list all the specials, and didn't explain the cheeses in our cheese plate. Our gin cocktails were fine. My glass of port was disappointing. My friend's burger seemed good and the fries were delicious. My fish was drowning in butter sauce, and surrounded by surprisingly flavorless apple cubes. For dessert, we split a mediocre chocolate dish. For the price, this place wasn't worth it. I was a bit disappointed."

"Very cute and quaint restaurant. Enjoyable and pleasant hostess to start the meal off right with several interesting dishes to come back an try. Hopefully they'll be a fish and chips on the menu to really get into the theme and feel of the restaurant."

"food was good but was spoiled by the service, provided by a slightly self-impressed individual. we ordered one round of drinks and our brunch entrees. he came by to check on us immediately -- annoying at best since no one had tried their entree yet. the next time we saw him was when he dropped the check on the table. no "need another drink? interested in coffee? would you like more water? can i provide you anything?" plus we didn't ask for the check. why were we given the bums rush???"

"Everything was great, the food is amazing, I love the ambiance, the only problem was that the table (for 2) we were given against the wall was mere inches away from the adjoining (noisy) table of six. I had the asked the (reluctant) hostess to move them a little (they had plenty of room on the other side) and it became awkward with the other table. By the end of the dinner the table of six were so loud we could hardly carry on a conversation."
