Cantinetta Luca
The menu offers casual dining, featuring items such as delicious pizza, baked in an authentic, Italian, no gas, wood-burning pizza oven. Luca also specializes in antipasti, a dozen or so varieties of salumis and handmade pasta. Whole fish and roasted meats are served family style. All of the presentations are simple and rustic; food prepared with fresh seasonal ingredients to bring out bold flavors. The executive chef is Jason Balestrieri who worked under Joachim Splichal at Patina, the famed Los Angeles restaurant. The interior decor of Cantinetta Luca is antique/modern, inspired by the old refurbished buildings of Italy. The design is a blend of stone, brick and glass, chiseled wood and bright Italian colors. The decor features a barrel vaulted ceiling, brick and chiseled beams contrasted by superb contemporary furnishings and modern lighting all set off by rich colors and textures.

"i reserved a table here as the reviews were great...we were a little disappointed. the neighborhood is expensive but this restaurant i think was really overpriced. 15/glass for wine? eh. i was excited for the pasta (had the duck taglietelle) but the portion was so small iw as glad i had eaten bread while waiting lol. the mussels were great (appetizer). BF has a pizza ... just ok. again not what we expected. overall the food was fine, but just really overpriced for what it was. and i hate when they skimp on the pasta, i mean there is nothing cheaper than pasta why not fill the plate? lol"

"The food was good, the portions, however, were on the small side. Pizza was good and big enough for two people to share easily. I thought the prices were a bit high. Service was very attentive and friendly. I would only go back if I had another deal otherwise it was too expensive for what it was. With the groupon I had which I paid $20 for $40 worth of food, the bill still came out to $80 with tax and tip included. We had one appetizer, the octopus (excellent), one pizza (good), one pasta (very small and only okay), 3 beers, and two deserts ( the tiramisu was perfect!)."

"We were very happy to see, upon entering, that the restaurant was even nicer than we had expected from the photos. Two of the three dinners were excellent, even though they were only warm, not hot. The mortadella ravioli's were soft and the sauce too thin. Overall we enjoyed the experience, and would return again."

"I only went there because of a Groupon I bought. The menu is very limited, the service wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Had to send my bill back to be corrected for the groupon discount. The food is overpriced also. There are better places to eat at in Carmel. I also found out this place has the same owner as the 400 Degrees burger joint also. That explains the high prices. Avoid 400 Degrees also. $20 for a burger, fries and drink. Ridiculous."

"The food was fine but the hosts and service need a lot of improvement. We weren't seated until 25 minutes after our reservation with no consideration other than a brusk apology. No offer of a glass of wine or anything else while we sat at the bar and waited and waited and waited. What made it even more upsetting is that other parties with later reservations were seated while they made us sit and wait. The food was fine but definitely not worth putting up with that kind of treatment."

"I loved that the front window booth was available. Created and cozy nook for dining. This was a third visit to Luca and it was for a special occasion, birthday. We had a special wine request and the Somolier was very helpful at choosing just the right wine.
Not being familiar with Italian wines we asked for something comparable to a Red Zinfindel. The Tratturi Primitivo wine was perfect. He also suggested excellent appetizer ideas. The Salame,Burrata adn Crespelle all were melt in your mouth wonderful, flavorful and worked well together. The restaurant was not too crowded and noisy which kept the ambience light and easy on the ears. An overall great experience. We will be back!"

"What a let down. We came to this restaurant last year and were completely enamored with the food and service and reasonable prices. We couldn't wait to come back, especially for the grilled octopus salad and crispy, complex pizzas. This time however, we found an entirely new menu, with much higher prices and none of our favorites. The meal started with stale bread sticks and instead of the perfectly grilled octopus over well seasoned and dressed greens, we got badly seasoned, mushy octopus mixed in with a bland couscous salad. The rest of the meal was much worse and we would have liked to talk to our waiter about it, but we never saw him again until we were ready for the check. Very bad experience. Never again."

"Interested in bottom line.......
Made resv, we were on time, seated too closely to another couple, but doable. While sipping our wine, the server and manager pulled another table to within 2" of our table (remodeling so have tape in purse). When we said that they've got to be kidding, the manager responded curtly that this is how they do it, it's a crowded restaurant. We pointed out that if they removed the table from the line of tables that we were stuck at, all the rest of the customers in the line would have a decent space to eat and spend our money. No offers to move us until we said that this would be the last time we would dine there and maybe we should write a review. Then they put us at the bar next to the servers."

"Food was good, probably a bit under-seasoned for our taste so it could have been very good or excellent, and there was no salt or pepper to be found, and out waitperson was not very attentive or available. The service was awful, and the table selected for us was worse (at the front door in front of the host station, where 2-3 employees stood and talked about work and outside work activities the whole time we were there). It took us 20 minutes just to get water while these 2-3 people looked (or didn't look) at us, we were right in front of them. Saturday at 6:15 is busy, but not that busy. We've been here several times before but the service experience was so bad, and there are so many other choices available, this moves to near bottom."

"The sommelier gave us an excellent suggestion for an Italian wine of a varietal we had never heard of (much less tried) before. Trying the penne with Ragu Verde--a sauce made with wild mushrooms, pork liver, and onions--was also a gamble, but it paid off with unique and delicious flavors. Even the charcuterie selections for the appetizers were new little treats. Trust the staff and try something different. Fun atmosphere too."

"We have eaten here in the past and had good food. This time, it was hit or miss. My pasta dish was just so so. Kind of just a lump of pasta (stuck together) on a plate. My husband had the Swordfish, which he enjoyed. Our salads were heaped into bowls, lots of lettuce and rather dull. I think you can never go wrong with the pizza! "We were running 30 minutes late in which they were very understanding. Service was attentive and knowledgable, but not intrusive. They have a great list of italian wines and price points to satisfy everyone. We started with the Arancini and their house cured prosciutto which were both great. Then, between my girlfriend and I we split the bistecca alla fiorentine, which was cooked perfectly, and was delicious. Literally melted in your mouth. Finished with the quintessential tiramisu which hit the spot. All in all, a great evening and date night. Thank you Chef and FOH
Also, for those that are looking for a late night spot in Carmel, apparently they recently started turning the front half of the restaurant into a lounge on Saturday"

"We enjoyed Luca on a Sunday evening for a special occasion. Our server and his colleagues were very professional in the way one used to see at Italian restaurants in San Francisco. The crushed black olive/olive oil accompaniment to the bread was delicious - get me the recipe good. We shared a salumi sampler and found that it compared favorably with a similar tray we enjoyed last spring in Italy. My gnocchi with braised pork cheek was melt in your mouth delicious; my wife's pumpkin ravioli was good but the sauce was too sweet, overcoming the savory flavors she expected. We ordered wines by the glass and while the selections were limited, our choices of Barolo and Sangiovese were rewarding."

"We were celebrating our 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY & had made reservations a month in advance, we reminded the
restaurant employee of this special occasion when they called to confirm; the restaurant was very crowded as it was Valentine's
Day, however, we had to wait 20 minutes to be seated (for a 6:30 PM reservation) were seated at a table squashed between
two other tables, NO MENTION was made of this auspicious occasion! There was plenty of special attention paid to "regulars"
which is fine....but really...50 years of a loving marriage certainly should deserve a little recognition!!!
