"Unless your at the bar this is not a place for causal dining as the website says. Came in with my 5 year nephew and 7 month old neice and the staff looked worried and they had to dig for a childrens menu. The average age of the other guest was around 65 so we felt a little out of place being only in our late 20's.
But the food was amazing and the staff was very pleasant. Full of compliments how well the children were durning our vist."

"I have been to the Carlton many times and have always had good food & service. My visit last week was the best meal I've had in a long time and the best I ever had at The Carlton. The Chilean Sea Bass melted in my mount and the blue cheese risotto was delicious. We had a delightful evening because of it."

"I took my wife to The Carlton the night before I ran the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. My wife had the filet and it was out of this world. The waiter helped me pick out a seafood dish that wouldn't weigh me down for the run the next day. He was spot on. Everything was perfect. There are many reasons why this is our favorite restaurant in Pgh."

"This is a very fine restaurant but we got caught in the "pre-concert" mode. Service started out strong but diminished rapidly as the location became more and more crowded. The entrees, which we both had the same one, was liked by one and not liked at all by the other diner, but taste is very personal. The dessert we ordered never arrived before we had to leave for the show. We were charged for limo service we did not order. We would return as our prior experiences have all been very positive, but not prior to a show."

"We dined at the Carlton on 4/15 and had a great experience. As always, the restaurant provided a very nice dining ambiance allowing for easy conversation. Diane, our server was knowledgeable, friendly and appropriately attentive. The John Dory that I had was prepared expertly, and although generally not a fan of couscous, is was very good. I would always recommend this restaurant for a great downtown Pittsburgh dining experience."

Too much shell fish on menu. Makea it hard for those with allergies to make selection of seafood dishes when shellfish is added to almost every entree. The night we went was very busy and stressed. Out of some items. Waiter was slow because of kitchen--he was polite and conscentious though."

"We were greeted very warmly when we arrived. After being seated, we were given an iPad that showed all their wines by region and vintage. Nice touch. The other cool aspect of their wine is that you can go up to their wine rack and actually pick your wine and bring it back to the table. It's highlighted by the price. Very unique. I chose a 2006 Dunn Howell Mountain Cab. It was expertly decanted by our waitress.
The food was very good. I had lobster bisque which was creamy and well seasoned. I then had a sea bass special that came with rice and a really tasty light red sauce. It was accompanied by mixed vegetables. It was cooked perfectly and the sauce made the meal. I highly recommend The Carlton for it's meals and wine list"

"The food was delicious, but the service was awful. I initially asked for a beer for myself and a drink menu for my girlfriend. 40 minutes later, our dinner orders were taken. About 25 minutes after that, our food came. 15 minutes after that, my beer finally came, with no drink menu ever arriving. The older couple at a table across from us ordered a bottle of wine as soon as they sat down, so I guess the waiter decided to pay his attention to them. We'd have probably ordered more food if we didn't just want to get out of the place."

"Food is always imaginative and top notch!
Some of the servvice is not as attentive as in the past. Whether it's a problem of being spread too thin, I don't have an explanation. Late getting our menu's, no description of specials etc. However I might add that it has been the same server the last 2 visits. I will ask not to be seated in his section the next visit."

"Valentines Day was over booked, too crowded. Had to wait 15 minute or more for a 7:30 reservation. It also appears the kitchen couldn't handle the heat. My dish was cold and over cooked. I sent it back and got it done right. My date's osso boco was cold. The server forgot to bring the wine he had ordered. I also notice at lease one dish at other tables also got sent back. A poor performance over all. This used to be a great place to eat. What happened?"

"We visited the Carlton on the weekend after Valentines Day. The service was wonderful as usual. The food, was not up to the normal Carlton standards. My vegtables were over done and the scallops were missing that nice carmelized sear. Had a wonderful wine you would only find at the Carlton."

"The food was amazing! Lived up to every expectation I had. Tried several different types of wine, all to my liking. Nice romantic setting for my boyfriend and I who were there for our Valentines dinner. We both loved everything and will def be returning. :)"

"Second time there for husbands birthday. Not as good as last time, but still good. I had asked for a special table when making the reservation and it was not acknowledge when we got there. "this is a solid, mainstay of downtown Pittsburgh. The menu changes to keep up withthe seasons. The food is good and not in gigantic portions so you can order a salad and entree without stuffing yourself. The service is helpful and not rushed. They have a nice wine list, considering the limiations that restaraunts in PA face. It's a good place for business meals or for a date. The bar is hopping before Penguins' games and at happy hour."

"My boyfriend and I dined at The Carlton on Valentine's Day, sure to be one of the busiest nights they have. Service was great, the food was marvelous, and they even placed my present on the table so it was waiting for me when we sat down. The scallop BLT appetizer was delicious. The scallop melted in my mouth, and the bacon was thicker than any piece I have ever seen. I had the lamb chops, which were perfect, and my boyfriend had the mahi mahi, which was also a good choice. We will definitely go back. I would love to go there for lunch, too. I hear the crab cakes are awesome!"

"We took my parents for their anniversary. The restaurant is a favorite of theirs and we all enjoyed it very much. The menu successfully combines traditional entrees with innovative preparations. On a minor note, the spread served with the bread didn't have much of a taste. We would have preferred service of butter and a spread. The waiter readily brought butter when we requested it."
