Featuring local "farm to table" food using a breadth of farmer in the Missouri and Illinois communities. When asked to define of The Crossing, Owner/Executive Chef Jim Fiala often says that he is a chef that buys locally whenever possible and cooks as any French and/or Italian chef would given the ingredients sourced. Joining Jim is Chef Matt Abeshouse who brings a wealth of passion and expertise in classic French cuisine to the kitchen. Our food is fresh, organic (whenever possible), seasonal and by design very simple. The Crossing stays true to classic techniques and the chefs love showing off their skills and passion for elegant food.
"One of our favorite food items is morel mushrooms which are only available for a short time in the spring. The Crossing did a great job of bringing out the very delicate flavor of the mushrooms in a pasta dish. They were also willing to substitute morels for other mushrooms in their other dishes for an upcharge. The price of the mushroom dishes reflected the scarcity and short duration of the morels. Buth what the heck, once a year its worth it. The Crossing has a lot of other very nice dishes that are sort of off the beaten path but were also very good. The wine list is pretty extensive as well. Service was good but a bit ragged at times. The owner/chef of the restaurant was on hand and in fact help serve some of the patrons including us"

"While my husband and I were visiting the St. Louis area, we celebrated our 21st anniversary. From the moment we arrived at the Crossings, we felt that we were given extra special treatment. Our waiter was funny and professional. He knew his wines and the food and described each so well it was hard to choose only one plate for each course! My husband and I each ordered off of the tasting menu and our waiter (sorry I can't remember your name) matched each dish with a specific wine. He did an awesome job - it made our night even more special. If we ever find ourselves in St. Louis again, this is a definite stop!"

"Second time back. Simply put, this is an excellent restaurant. We tend to favor more flavorful, ethnic restaurants (eg, Indian, Thai, high end Mexican) but The Crossing is undeniably good at what it does, which is provide well prepared and well presented food with a delicate touch. Preferred the scallops on my last trip, would recommend those."

"We thought The Crossing was pretty good. My finance and I are major foodies and enjoy quite a bit of fine dining. This resturant was pleasant. Our favorite part was the service. Their crew was professional but rolled with our quirky punches. Courses were well-timed. The food was PERFECTLY prepared but I thought the flavors and combinations were pretty consistent with other fine dining. The wine and liquor lists were extensive with good variety. The prices were, in my opinion, a shade higher than they should be but not too far off. Overall, a good find in St Louis area."

"Jim Fiala serves locally-sourced ingredients and he executes it with panache. His wait-staff are well-informed about the food and wine they serve and both are among the best in the St. Louis area. I heartily recommend you let Jim's kitchen create a meal for you complete with the recommended wine flights -- you won't be disappointed!"

"My husband and I decided to go out for a nice dinner, and since we're moving to Chicago soon we wanted to go somewhere that can only be found in St. Louis. So, we did some searching and found this cute little "French" restaurant. We gave it a try and had a very pleasant experience. We went with the tasting menu and corresponding wine pairings and the food and wine were absolutely delicious (though not your typical authentic French dishes that you might find elsewhere - which we liked). We had a beet and goat cheese salad, ravioli with truffle oil, and Texas quail which were all super tasty. The wines were amazing also and we even wrote them down so we can enjoy them at home!
The restaurant itself is somewhat small, but nice and intimate"

"Food was mildly disappointing. Service was great. Wine selection by the glass was expensive . My wife's pork loin entree was tough. Beet salad and pasta appetizer were very nicely done. Dining room is beautiful with white linen tablecloths. A second visit might be better but there are too many other good places to select from."

"The Crossing has a wonder, deep wine list, with good choices at a lot of different price points.
The food was outstanding. We chose the tasting menu. The pricing was a little misleading, but in a very good way - I thought the food was way better than the price led me to expect.
We love Acero and loved Lilima when it was open, and The Crossing is in that same family. Our only issue is that the restaurant feels a little bit tightly packed. There was room for the wait staff to work, but it still felt a little crowded. Not a serious issue. We'll be back quickly, despite that."

"Three of us went for the Ultimate Tasting. Our server thought we would need an extra course, which was delicious. I was fascinated that in about half the courses, we did not receive the same dish as each other. They were just big enough to share bites. Our wine pairings were tasty, albeit a little pricey.
I like the concept of French-style cooking with local ingredients. The Crossing is not the only restaurant to try this, but it does it right.
I cannot think of anything that was not top notch at our meal. The food was a very good value; the wines enhanced our meal.
Our server was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his food and wine, and he seemed genuinely pleased to have guests who were there for the food."

"I cannot say enough good things about the tasting menu at The Crossing. I went with the beet salad, crab cake, talipia, and creme brulee. Everything was delicious. My boyfriend had the quail and said it was the best quail dish he has ever had. The price of the tasting menu is very reasonable considering the quality of the food. I love this place!"

"We enjoyed one of our best dinners in some time. Yet, it is difficult to justify the price for this enjoyable meal. While we generally enjoy the three course tasting menu, we chose one of the special entrees of the evening, without inquiring about price. Next time we will ask before ordering."

"My wife and I have eaten at the Crossing a couple times a year over the past several years. The food is the main draw for us and we were particularly pleased to see that Chef Fiala has been nominated for a James Beard award for Best Chefs in the Midwest.
Based on the food we received on Saturday evening, I am guessing Chef Fiala was not preparing the food. While all the food was acceptable, it was lacking a bit of care. The crudo was poorly cut, which the waiter blamed on the fish itself, the caesar salad had some really questionable lettuce and the porchetta was extremely dry and was probably the worst porchetta I have ever had. On the plus side the egg raviolo was splendid and our server, Garret, was very attentive and pleasant."

"I love going to a restaurant a bit before our reservation to relax with a glass of wine in the bar. I hate when they have a small bar AND it's full with people eating at the bar. I know, it's based on the smoking ban that encourages it, but I wish there was a way for people to actually get a table to eat. Ugh"

"Had a great post Valentin's Day dinner with my lovely bride and certainly enjoyed the meal. The stars of the show were the Seared Scallop and Fois Gras and the Filet. Rest of the meal was very good, but not quite up to the standard I believe the restaurant touts. A little more creativity with the Veloute, Tagliatelle and a couple of the other courses and it would have been an amazing culinary event. Like I said though, food was wonderful, just was expecting a little more from such an established Chef. Service was phenomenal and the wife and I had an overall great experience and would certainly recommend The Crossing to others for a romantic evening."

"We went for the $25 Clayton Restaurant Week menu. We were favorably impressed by the generous serving size of all three courses. The quality of the food and the service were the usual excellent standard that The Crossing is known for. This is a consistently great restaurant."

"It was Clayton Restaurant Week, so the menu was pared down. One would thing everything would be easy to.prepare & present fresh, but our meals weren't that exciting & reminded us of meals at a mediocre wedding reception. I expected more from the Crossing, in terms if flavor & freshness. My pork seemed tough & like it had been under s warmer for a while. Even though it was restaurant week, I still expect the same quality food. The service & ambiance was still good."

"We loved, loved, loved it!! We have already shared our dining experience with a number of friends. We had not been for awhile and have already decided to return very soon. The food was superb.....the best I have have been served as far back as I can remember. I enjoyed Squash Bisque, Salmon with out of the world lentils and Chocolate Molden cake. My husband wouldn't share his Rigatoni, nor his Pork and Spinach entree. His Creme Brule was gone before I could pick up my spoon. Yummy Cuisine!
My daughter recently researched "The Best" restaurants in St. Louis and after her research sent us a gift certificate to "The Crossings." I must add, we can't wait to return!"

"We visited The Crossing during Clayton Restaurant Week so we had a fixed menu to order from; starter, entree, dessert. Everyone at our table (6 adults) all had favorable comments on all three courses. Mine was delicious while being pleasing to the eye and perfectly sized portions. The restaurant was crowded but the service was impeccable! One of my favorite restaurants in the St Louis area."

"We were there on a very busy evening because of a city-wide promotional event. The wait was reasonable considering our large party (8 total). Also, because of the promotion, the menu was limited. I had a beet salad which was awesome, followed by tilapia over spinach and butternut squash. Warm chocolate cake for dessert. My husband chose the exact same foods, and we both agreed it was great. Others in our party tried different choices, and no one was disappointed. The restaurant is pretty small, so I'd recommend an advance reservation. We will definitely try it again when we have access to the full menu."

"Food was poorly prepared. It was hard for me to finish my meal. The meat was overcooked, very dry and chewy. I was disappointed as I had been wanting to try the restaurant for awhile. I will not go back. It was way over priced for the quality of the food. My husband's tilapia was good but not great. We did enjoy the beet salad and rigatoni appetizer, however."

"As a longtime resident of Clayton, the location of The Crossing will forever be, to me, The Lettuce Leaf, a favorite former casual restaurant. The Crossing has a much more formal character, more expansive, sophisticated menu, but exists in the same space with, to my eye, very little change of atmosphere. So the place itself is lacking to me, and the food was not fantastic enough to make me forget my surroundings. The offerings during restaurant week were limited, which I expected, but were also lackluster. The service was first class, very attentive with all tables filled. That was a stand out. The food came out quickly, was hot, but just good - not great. Within the "Select Special Features", there was not a single one that I would check."

"I went for Clayton Restaurant Week, so I didn't have an opportunity to choose from their regular full menu. "Went for Clayton Restaurant Week, so had a limited menu - but choices were still great! Butternut squash soup with string of balsalmic was nice and warming, but tasted a little watered down. Beef brisket with polenta was delicious and tender, and apple tart with ice cream was awesome! Definitely want to go back and try more from a larger menu. Service was friendly and even got to meet Jim Fiala. Super friendly guy and totally was psyched to meet him after knowing his awesome reputation for food in STL. Great restaurant - complimentary valet parking."
