Restaurant Reviews for La Provence - San Francisco

La Provence - San Francisco reservations La Provence - San Francisco

1001 Guerrero St
San Francisco, CA 94110

Dip down to the south of France to La Provence, the authentic Provençal French restaurant. Seafood, poultry, game and fresh produce dominate the menu, and the flavors of herbs, garlic and citrus permeate most dishes. Contrary to Parisian tradition, there is little in the way of cream and butter. Not to forget is their complementing wine list. Give them a try. As they say at La Provence "You've got taste? We've got flavor"

Review 3 for La Provence - San Francisco

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Our first visit to La Provence was quite rewarding. The food was exceptional and well-prepared. The waiter was attentive and pleasant to talk to. We liked that the menu didn't have the usual suspects on it. Filet Mignon of Porc, for example, was delicious. And no creme brulee in sight. Instead, a wonderful Strawberries Verinne. We'll be back."

Review 6 for La Provence - San Francisco

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This was my first dining experience at a French restaurant and the food was exquisite. i have never had these food combinations before: sweet apricot marmalade on duck pistachio; veal seared carpaccio; a juicy, tender pork filet mignon; and the most melt-in-your-mouth salmon with parsnip puree. Dessert was also delicious. I'm not a fan of tiramisu cake, but the tiramisu here is delectable, prepared with hazelnut sauce and cocoa powder atop a layer of whip cream. I was very impressed by freshness of the food and unique ingredients. The portions were a good size, leaving me satiated but not heavy."

Review 7 for La Provence - San Francisco

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Valentine's prix fixe menu was wonderful. The proprietor, Lionel Lafitte, has done a wonderful job in bringing wonderful culinary delights to the table without the use of butter or cream. This menu had mostly items that aren't on the regular menu, although the regular menu is worth revisiting over and over. For the price, it's hard to beat this fine little restaurant."

Review 8 for La Provence - San Francisco

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"As a romantic spot, this place cannot be beat. I generally find that the appetizers and soups are better than the entres (they are always excellent!) BUT overall the food is tasty. Dessert is always wonderful as well. The main glitch is that the restaurant seems to have a repeated problem with seating you even with reservations. This time there was a short wait that could have been avoided. Once you are seated the service is superb. I will definitely go back for lunch and special occasions."

Review 9 for La Provence - San Francisco

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant in the Mission. Food snobs: spend more elsewhere:-) Warm, colorful, roomy (not crushed in). The menu is simple but broad. Something for every taste. French country food, very like what we experienced in small towns of Provence and haute Luberon. Lionel, the owner and executive chef, was friendly & warm but not overattentive. Waitstaff: efficient, friendly, professional. We enjoyed the salad and bruchetta, the Bouillabaisse and pork. All well prepared & nicely presented. Unlike many current restaurants we frequent, the dishes were a perfect balance of sweet and savory, NOT over salted. Nice wine list for all pocket books. $20 corkage encourages one to try their list ... which we did. We'll be bac"

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"This was our last Dine about town restaurant. We have/had eaten at 5 others
All were better on all criteria. The tiping point was when the owner took empty wine bottles and put them on the sidewalk next to a SF City trash bin.
Also they do not accept AMEX

Review 14 for La Provence - San Francisco

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We've been to this restaurant half a dozen times in the last few years and it never dissapoints us. This time I got the soupe de poissons and my wife got the duck. Both dishes were extremely well crafted and tasted great. The wine was amazing. The owner is as quirky as usual - correcting my french pronunciation. That is really OK with me since it reminds me of the days I lived in France as an expat.

All in all - this is a great little restaurant with authentic southern French flavors. Highly recommended!

Review 15 for La Provence - San Francisco

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"This restaurant was recommended by a guide on San francisco. It is an Open Table Winner. The food was very good and the waiter was friendly. The ambience of La Provence left something to be desired however. I would have expected table cloths at what should have been a high end restaurant. This restaurant is in the mission and is a neighborhood gem. But for me I can't recommend it based only on the ambience."

Review 18 for La Provence - San Francisco

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We completely enjoyed our Christmas Eve dinner, and were delighted with their fixed price menu. The lobster bisque was flavorful and rich; the second course of goat cheese with pecans in a filo pastry, nicely bake to a golden brown, was a special treat. The sea bass as moist and flakey, and we both loved the parsnip puree "cake" which accompanied the main course. Those at an adjancet table seemed to enjoy their filet mignon. We both chose the coconut panna cotta, which provided a refreshing end to a great meal. The attentiveness of the staff provided a nice balance between service and privacy.

We'll be back soon to try their regular menu.

"The waiter was very helpful and informed regarding wine selection. Allowed our table connoisseur to taste the wine he was recommending. The food was consistently good and solid. Review 24 for La Provence - San Francisco

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"La Provence is gradually becoming one of our favorite places, surely wonderful enough to merit without hesitation a trip over the bridge to San Francisco. Lionel LaFite's reception is warm and friendly, and his cuisine is spot-on terrific no matter what I choose. His list of wines, most from southern France, is well-selected to complement the Provençal dishes he serves. My favorites include the octopus salad, the grand aïoli (with cod), the filet mignon of pork, and the rabbit ravioli. The service is friendly and casual, yet always professional and well timed. La Provence is at or near the top of our list of restaurants where everything comes together seamlessly and harmoniously. Merci beaucoup, Lionel!"

Review 25 for La Provence - San Francisco

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"This was our second visit to La Provence. The first one was better, and this time we've decided we're not going back. The owner/manager is clearly just interested in making money, and does not seem to take a personal interest in his customers (at least not us). We had come there to celebrate our 12th anniversary, and mentioned this when we made our reservation. When we brought this up after our dinner the owner acknowledged that he'd seen it. But all he did was bring a glass of wine over to our table for himself, raising his glass and saying 'any event is a good enough reason for me to have a drink'. Then he walked away without even saying congratulations."

"Nice little unpretentious neighborhood southern french restaurant with knowledgeable friendly service with relaxed atmosphere quiet enough to have a normal conversation.
