The majestic "Million Dollar" ocean view from The Ka Ikena Restaurant of the Culinary Institute of the Pacific is surpassed only by the gourmet delights found on its menus. The Culinary Institute of the Pacific at Kapi`olani Community College has produced many of Hawaii’s top chefs who have become world famous for their ability to blend classical Western cuisines with the unique ingredients and flavors of Asia and the Pacific.
Lunch and Dinner are produced and served by students enrolled in its culinary and pastry arts program, .
Named in honor of Queen Kapi`olani, the college and its culinary arts program maintains her legacy and her motto, “kulia i ka nu`u” (to strive for the highest) in all that we do. "We were a party of 4, and we each ordered something different so that we could "sample" a lot of different food. This proved to be a very good idea, as everything was delicious.
The students do an outstanding job and go out of their way to make dinner a truly enjoyable experience for everyone. It is a satisfying experience knowing that, as a customer, we're helping with their culinary education. I love this place and you simply cannot find another fine dining experience on this island for this price."

My guest, a first timer, was most delighted with the "great atmosphere, casualness, friendliness, presentation, ambiance, great food, 'waiter's" knowledge and caring attitude.."

"This is the hardest review I have ever had to do. The student chefs did their best, but it is difficult to put out good food when the ingredients are not the best. I cannot blame the student chefs, but I do blame their instructor supervising the kitchen. She/he let meals go out of the kitchen that were over oiled. The service was like other cooking schools we have ate at more than acceptable."

"I am a regular here and the meal was excellent as always! Food is always superb and the presentation flawless! The servers, though students, aim to please and any mistakes the servers make, is due to learning on the job so certainly can be overlooked. This time, no mistakes and the service was impeccable! I have recommended this restaurant to so many people, that it is now hard to get a reservation...must book 3-4 weeks in advance. But worth it!"

"Great, as long as you know it is a practicing work station. Service can be slow, which we appreciated since we didn't need to be elsewhere until later that night. The dessert for birthday girl was a nice surprise and beautiful. How it tasted I don't know since we had dessert from the dessert bar, so we told her to take it home and share with her family."

"The table arrangement made it a very comfortable. There was no noise or distractions from other tables. The seafood dishes were very well received but the lamb shank did not have enough flavor and was somewhat dry. The goat cheese tart and tomatoes were great with comments that I don't usually eat tomatoes but those were good, I could have just had two servings of this salad instead of my entree. Two diners missed the crunch on the top of the creme brulee."

"Homemade cake noodle set the standard from your usual oyster sauce chicken cake noodle. Also great was all of the portions were just right especially when you get soup, salad, appetizer, main entree and dessert.
It was such a great treat to try a variety of different foods prepared in the best way possible, and all in one meal.
My advice, don't change a thing (portion sizes, appetizers, soup/salad, dessert tray, entrees)! I think you guys have really perfected the organization.

"What a wonderful culinary experience. From the moment we we seated, the staff was attentive to our every need. I particularly loved the presentation of the meals. I asked about the types of sauces that we were savoring and received DeGraff explanations each time. The venue was artfully decorated with paintings that evoked a tranquility to the guests. "We go here at least once during our annual trip to Honolulu and it never disappoints. Lunch includes salad or soup, dessert and beverage. You can also BYOB of wine and imbibe with a small corkage fee. The view is fabulous and the student-servers are solicitous and friendly. The room was fairly noisy and made conversation a challenge at times. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made 30 days in advance. Tips go to the scholarship fund for the culinary program, so don't be shy about giving."

"We were a party of five senior gals and everyone enjoyed the whole dining experience. From hostess to waiter to bus persons to cooking staff, all were excellent and provided great service. The timing between amuse, appetizer, soup/salad was great; however, it was quite a long wait for the entree. The cooking staff explained later that it was their first night of that rotation, so there were some things to work out. But, we did not mind and had such a leisurely dinner with time to chat. Presentation and portions were also great - loved my coconut dessert!"

"I didn't care too much for the sweet corn and chicken soup. It was served lukewarm and was too sweet for my palate. The steak and shrimp tempura was ok but the sauce was competing with the flavor of the steak. Dessert bar was fabulous."

"The culinary department at KCC shines in this spectacular view from Kahala to Koko Head. We ordered the lobster thermador which was the special of the day and it was delicious. The students are actually more attentive than some of the servers at high end restaurants! We came at 11:30, so my recommendations would be to try to get the first seating (11am) for lunch because there are only 11 parking stalls on campus. By the time we got there, some entrees had sold out, the parking lot was FULL and the dessert cart was running low by the time we were ready for dessert."

"We were a party of 12 for Valentines's Day dinner. The food choices were excellent and everyone in the party had no problem finding a suitable selection. The food was very good to excellent. The problem was the understaffing. The service was very slow and we had to ask repeatedly for additional bread, coffee, tea, etc. Our waiter worked his okole off trying to serve the table, but he was overwhelmed. He needed a helper, or another waiter, to get adequate servive to a party as large as ours. We all appreciated his attempts to serve us, but it was too much to expect from one young waiter."

"Our experience at the restaurant was just superior! We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the ambiance and our placement of where we sat. Our waiter, Trae was very attentive, very personable and thorough during our meal. We can't remember when the last time we had such good service.
The 5 course entree was just superb!!!!!! Everything was delicious! The presentation was also outstanding!!!!

"This was our first time and we had a wonderful lunch! We appreciated the efforts made by the students and the food was great. The buttermilk biscuit was delicious, the appetizer (both squash soup and duck confit salad) was beautifully presented and delicious as well. My entree of fresh fish (snapper) on spinach bed/mashed potatoes was good- the potato and spinach was just acceptable but not great. My husband had the osso buco with risotto-he said it tasted great but the meat quality was a bit chewy/fatty. The desert table had a great variety to choose from and yummy. Would definitely visit again.
Only negative was that it is very difficult to find...we visited 3 different buildings and took us an extra 15 minutes to find this "gem.""

"The menu had a nice variety to choose from. The food was great, the only flaw I found with the food was the steak I ordered came a bit cool. I don't think it was due to the medium rare, but that it wasn't served in a timely manner. Our server was very nervous. I told her to relax, but I think she did a good job. I had asked her questions that she did not readily have the answers for, but no big deal. Service was very good. I do believe that they need to maintain the facility, the ceilings need to be cleaned as they are black around the air conditioning ducts. But, overall excellent by far.
On the website, or online at open table, one could be informed that they only do three seatings and that you may bring your own choice of beve"

"What a pleasant surprise! I'm so happy that I finally had the opportunity to try Ka Ikena. There are only three dinner seating (when school is in session): 5:30, 5:45 and 6pm and they fill up fast! The early seatings allow you to enjoy the beautiful view from the slopes of Diamond Head. The food was delicious and the portions were extremely generous. The entree price includes one appetizer, soup or salad and dessert! Plus, it's BYOB, so it's very affordable. I'd like to try their lunch service next!"

"We have always enjoyed this venue. On our visit we had two problems. First was that 5 people at our table requested Beef Wellington and they were out. 4 people were told no more desserts of their first choice or even second. This is extreme poor planning on the senior staff.
When the service trays came from the kitchen the snapper in paper was cut and served while the lamb sat on the tray and got cold. I believe 4 people got the lamb as a subsitute and it was almost uncuttable, tough, dry and cold. Lamb shank is braised for a long time and is always fall of the bone tender. I believe that the lamb was thrown in for the beef and it was not done. No supervision in dining room and poor skills for senior staff. You can do better."
