Named after a notoriously elusive rum-running prohibition ship, the Black Duck resides in a beautifully restored 18th century brownstone. Besides the the historical landscape, we offer an array of Contemporary American delicacies served by candlelight. The romantic yet New England inspired décor perfectly compliments the backlit alabaster bar. Our elegant and cozy lounge with a fireplace is perfect for a happy hour drink (served daily from 4:00 - 7:00) or to enjoy the live Jazz performed Friday and Saturday evenings. We end the week by playing the James Bond Film Series on our dining room projector.
"We thoroughly enjoyed our first dining experience finding the atmosphere romantic and intimate - perfect for celebrating a quiet birthday. Our waiter offered excellent service and accommodated our needs. The food overall was excellent; the duckling exquisite. Although there are not many entree choices and the dessert portion is too small for the price, we recommend Black Duck and will return again to enjoy another wonderful dinner. Tom and Lois"

"What a treat to dine at Black Duck! Located within the Park South Hotel, the restaurant is cozy and inviting, with a lively bar. For starters, we ordered the Caesar salad and mixed green salad -- both fresh and crisp. Our main courses -- the roasted duck and pork chop -- were fabulously delicious. The duck was tender and juicy, as was the pork chop. Dessert: the red velvet cake -- yum! Black Duck also has a nice selection of wines. As for the service -- excellent. One nice surprise -- a small jazz band (bass, drum, sax) entertained the dinner/bar crowd. We'll definitely return to dine at Black Duck!"

"We made reservations hoping for a special dinner out. The service at the door was fast and friendly and we were seated and given water right away. But the menu was so disappointing in terms of food options that we ended up leaving.......
Seems to be a good place for after work drinks and a quickie dinner if staying in the adjacent hotel.."

"We ate here for their Valentine's Day "special" for which the offerings were limited, the entire staff kept agressively pushing the undersold menu items, and the food was adequate at best.
Try anywhere else!"

"I suspect the reviews were written by the bar staff! When the best you can say is "not the worst meal I ever had" I think that sums it up. Poor wine choice. The "special" LI Duck appeared in 15 mins, suspiciuosly too short a time period. As I say, not a disaster but so so."

"The food at Black Duck was tasty although we were surprised to find out that bread was not served unless one specifically asked for it. The restaurant was not crowded when we dined and there was no reason for the service to be inattentive. We have been there before and so wanted to return but found the meal to be disappointing."

"This was a great experience mainly due to the service (Michael was great!), but also the food. The truffle fries, crab cakes, and kale salad were just amazing!"

"We have now discovered this place tucked away on a side street and we will be coming back. The food is excellent and comes from very fine purveyors and the happy hour deal is a good one if you come on the early side. And they are very obliging when it comes to making any kind of substitution on your dish. And how welcoming they are. All in all, a very good formula."

"The food is nothing special here but at inflated prices. We were there for brunch and dishes were creatively described but tasted bland and unimaginative. Their duck confit was a big disappointment (tasted just like chicken) and the desserts seem to be commercial rather than home made. Not worth the visit."

"Quite simply this place was excellent. My amazing date and I decided to go on Friday which included a jazz band. The wait staff was pleasant, informative and attentive. The environment seems to be made for a nice date but they had a nice front area They also have a few tables in the front for when the weather improves. The highlight of the experience was the food. We started with the sliders. They were absolutely tasty, though a bit dry. My date had the roast chicken and I the roast duo. It was immaculately prepared. At first it did not seem unusual but each bite was more and more interesting. This is definitely a place that we would frequent"

"My boyfriend lives near Black Duck. We always have a really great time when we go there! The food is consistently excellent and the service is attentive but not annoying at all. Call ahead if you're going for the jazz because the schedule is a little inconsistent."

"This was a great find; it is a lovely restaurant which has a small jazz group on many evenings. The food is good; service is attentive without being intrusive; prices are moderate and portions are large. I certainly would recommend it for a pleasant evening."

"My wife and I come into the city every once in a while to see a play or just hang out. We have been here a few times, and it is great. When booking through open table I made a "special request" that we were interested in gluten free options. Upon arriving they confirmed this with us, and the waitstaff was prepared with recommendations. Would highly recommend."

"I am always on the look-out a restaurant that serves fine food at reasonable prices , pleasent surroundings and allows you to bring your own wines. NB: you must make the reservations through Open Table and note it on your reservation. Kudos to Black Duck for working with Open Table to allow this. The menu is small but well thought out and nicely prepared with quality ingredients. We had the crab cake and elk sausage as a starter, Duck and pork chop for entrees. The desserts Chocolate mousse and pecan tart while good were not the same caliber of the starters and entrees. They will be changing their menu soon, we are looking forward to our next meal there."

"I wasn't very happy with this restaurant. I had heard great reviews from a friend but I thought that the decor was shabby and the food was just okay. The service was excellent and the staff was extremely hospitable but I think the restaurant could use a renovation. It looked outdated. The thin cut fries were delicious but everything else we ate was unmemorable. I remember while we were eating we thought everything tasted bland. On our way out the restaurant manager informed us that there is live jazz on the weekends. Maybe that would have created a better ambiance. As for now, I would not go back and I would not recommend it."

"Our rating for ambiance is a notch lower because some of the tables (like ours) were under strong spot lighting and the room was a little on the loud side. We are not particularly price conscious, but we thought it over priced. Example: my entree of three medium size scallops in butter and herbs + three slices of grilled bread + greens was $24. The tab came with an 18.5% gratuity already added in - something I find offensive for a party of two. The "service charge" was on the gross meal amount. For full disclosure we had a $25 gift certificate that reduced the $101 meal for two (no drinks, one salad, two entrees, two desserts) to $76."

"The menu selections are few, but what is there is delicious and innovative. Grilled romaine with smokey bacon and a yummy dressing. Pretzel coated crab cake over a rutabaga couli. Striped bass perfectly cooked over a bit of cubed potato hash. Would definitely return."

"My wife and I ate at the Black Duck on Valentine's Day just after arriving in New York City for the weekend. Although we did not get to order off the regular menu, the special occassion menu was excellent. It was really nice to find a quiet, romantic neighborhood restaurant for the special evening rather than a chaotic "tourist trap". It was a really nice touch that, although dessert was part of the meal, they gave us two cupcakes in a bag tied with a ribbon when we left for us to enjoy later. We also liked seeing the vintage black and white movies playing at the bar rather than the usual SportsCenter highligh reel. We will definitely go back!"

"It was a great dinner. The piano bar was great, they show old films around the bar area. We sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly and competent. Dinner was good -tho menu items are limited. My roasted lobster was very good."

"We love going to Black Duck. Perfect location - food is fantastic - service is always top notch. They have a changed their menu and the food was delicious. The service is always great. I had the duck cooked two ways and it was cooked to perfection. Not greasy at all. I would definitely try this place if you have not been there yet."

"I went there for a Valentine's Day dinner, and I was impressed. It's a nice, small, quiet spot to have dinner and actually hear each other have a conversation. The food was delicious, and wait staff were attentive. The cocktails were also tasty, and I highly recommend getting there early in order to have a taste.
I'm looking forward to going on Bond-themed, live Jazz nights."

"Felt good when walking in, lovely bar. Bar lady and lady greeting when entering restaurant were very good. The guys waiting the tables were poor, not interested in communicating with guests, felt as if they were putting themselves out to give you any attention. If I lived closer would pop in here for a drink but wouldn't make a special effort to go there."

"The food is really good! And we wanted to have a nice glass of wine to go along with it. But it was not to be. Although we ordered it just when our dinner arrived, the wine appeared when we were just about finished. This is not the way to enjoy a meal at a restaurant, sorry."

"Came here for Restaurant Week because of the good reviews this place received. The cozy fireplace helps during the cold New York winter nights. The place had a very interesting feel to it; felt like I was inside a living room on a boat but only later realized Black Duck was named after a boat. Stay away from the Duck and the Hangar Steak as they were both wrongly cooked. Nice beer selection and great wine offerings."
