Welcome to Hart House, one of the lower mainland's finest dining experiences. Built in 1910, the locally renowned Tudor style heritage house is situated on two acres of gardens on Deer Lake. This idyllic country estate, is only 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver.
Proprietor and restaurateur Paul Smolen transformed the 'family home' into a restaurant in 1989.
Since then, Hart House has opened its doors to countless dining guests, newlyweds and corporate clients; offering culinary excellence, a well stocked wine cellar and friendly professional service.

"What a lovely place this is! I came here for a dinner with my parents after attending my university graduation ceremony. The service was spectacular and the food was absolutely delicious - best steak I've ever had. I think most impressive of all is the ambiance - it really has a special warm and welcoming feeling with beautiful surroundings. Hart House is an excellent way to cap off a special occasion!"

"A group of 6 of us went for lunch and were able to take advantage of outdoor seating with a great view of the grounds. Tables are spaced well apart. The service was excellent. One of our group had dietary restrictions which were easily accommodated. The rest chose from the fixed price menu - all options were very good. Everyone had a lovely meal and look forward to returning."

"I live about 10 minutes away from this restaurant and run around Deer Lake everyday. But, I had never tried this restaurant, thinking it was too pricey, or that it was just for foodies.
My friend and myself had an amazing time, there was a wedding on, but the noise level was subdued and we were able to have a conversation. The waiter was attentive, but not intrusive, and I could tell that he was as passionate about the food he served as the cook was.
I would recommend this to anyone, even a casual dinner for a special occasion. It's not exceedingly pricey, even though we had a three course meal, our bill still came to within $100. This is a complete Burnaby gem. No other way to put it, I love the way the chef played with our tastebuds"

"It was a wonderful day, sitting outside by a nice garden, overlooking Deer Lake, enjoying a delicious 3 course lunch, chatting with friends. We are spoiled by all these nice things. I loved the oyster a lot especially the sauce. I even dipped my bread in there."

"Our company had our monthly lunch at the Hart House on friday May 31st. Our waiter seemed uninterested and nervous. We had calamari and caesar salad appies. These were both fine, but not anything special. 4 of the 5 entrees were served and another waiter informed the 5th person that he had dropped the plate with the 5th entree and it would be another 1 to 2 minutes. The catch of the day was a black cod and was inedible. Very raw and mushy on the inside. The prawn entree was over cooked and rubbery. Our waiter did not come and ask us how any of the food was(I guess he knows it is not good) or if we needed anything else. Overall we were very disappointed in the meal and the service and we will never return."

"My husband and I have dined at the Hart House many times in the past. The restaurant has definitely evolved showcasing the local ingredients & season of various vegetables & fruits. Their Chef for one year, she has a fabulous understanding of which ingredients go together. The food is divine, service is attentive, professional, courteous & friendly. The staff always greets you with a smile and their manager, always shakes your hands and thanks you for coming & asks how your experience was. Great food, beautiful park and scenery. Thank you always! We will continue to dine at the Hart House."

"Our server was courteous but it took around 45 minutes to receive our food after ordering. This is not normally a problem with a leisurely brunch but when you have two young children at the table enjoying a multi-generational meal, waiting time plays a factor. The restaurant was about a quarter full. There was a small wedding event being held outdoors but they must have known that ahead of time and should have staffed accordingly. This is only a small blip on our experiences with the Hart House so we'll give them another chance in the future."

"Three couples got together at the Hart House Restaurant before one of the couples was going to move from the Lower Mainland. They chose the Hart House from several restaurants that we suggested. Our service was excellent and the food sublime. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal and the server was very attentive - he let us chat for a long time and when it was time to order, he was there! And throughout the evening, he was excellent.
We have been to the Hart House before - and will return!"

"I have never had to worry about anything when I visit the Hart House, and this time was no exception. Our server - Kevin, was very pleasant, attentive and knowledgeable. He was very happy to provide us with excellent service. The dishes were superb as always. We were pleasantly surprised with an amuse bouche of carrot/ginger soup on the house. I thoroughly enjoyed the Belgian Endive salad for my starter. I could taste all the elements separately, and when combined, each flavor complimented the next. The Filet Mignon was executed with perfection and seductively flavorful. Desert was a decadent vanilla gelato sundae. The ambiance of the Hart House is second to none."

"When we order a porter house stake for 2 persons, it was cut by server at the table or some sort of cooking beside table before it is served at another restaurants.

"Superb! on every level, food is beautifully plated and served. quality of food and creativity great! Stars to the chefs..Surroundings are peaceful and elegant. "Went for a nice dinner out with another couple and thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The presentation was incredible and the taste was excellent. Portions a little on the smaller side for those with a healthier appetite but what you did get was incredibly tasty! Would recommend this for a special night out or celebrations in general. You can bring kids here which is why I ranked this 'moderate'- there was a group of folks upstairs with kids that were running around. It didn't bother us too much as we were enjoying the conversation at our table."

"We went there for brunch on sunday - great view even though cloudy skies. We had a 6 year old with us and our server was great with her. I had the mushroom omlette and it was pretty good. I was disappointed in the side salad though - it was just a bunch of leaves...nothings else (cucumber, onion... something else added would have been great. A salad is not just leaves). Skip the coffee though, all 6 of us thought it was terrible. I would go for tea or a latte or something. I have been many times and would definitely go back, even if just for the character of the house and the view."

"Went here for our 12th Anniversary. Had the duck leg confit as we were told that this is the chef's speciality. Well it was. It was the best duck I have ever tasted. Not greasy. Good size portion I couldn't eat it all. Had a 1999 Sterling Merlot to go with it. Couldn't have been better."

"Our server Gabriel was attentive, efficient, and excellent all around. He recommended a great white wine as we were having the surf and turf but I always enjoy my white wine with anything. Service from the time we step through the front was first class. They made us feel special as this was our first time at Hart House and we were celebrating a belated birthday and Valentine's.
The food was prepared to perfection. I could not have starchy food items at that time so the chef provided an excellent veggie substitution to go with the haricot verts. It went well with the food presentation. The steak was tender and prepared to my liking. The evening was perfect!

"Our romantic dinner could not have been in a nicer setting. The seating was well spaced and we were treated to a window table which was plenty private even though the room was more than half full. My wife and I enjoyed the steak & lobster special and both were cooked well. Because it was a special evening, we were treated to dessert after we passed on it initially which was a very nice touch on behalf of the General Manager, Ed.
Overall, we were both very pleased with our dining experience and do plan on returning for another romantic dinner in the future."
