Long ago chef Ngamprom "Hong" Thaimee left her modeling and television work in Thailand and made her way into the world of food, trainining under Thailand's most celebrated chef, M.L. Sirichalerm Savsti. Eventually she came to New York, where Thaimee cooked at Kittichai and Spice Market. She now goes solo at Ngam, which, aside from being her namesake, happens to be the Thai word for beautiful. The Union Square area spot serves updated spins on Thai comfort food, including a tom yum soup with crispy trout, Thai burger with papaya salad, pad Thai with grilled black tiger prawns, and duck larb salad. You'll also find a smaller lunch menu, plus a bar serving wine and beer.

"We must be in a minority because Ngam is popular. The dishes we ordered--pad Thai, sweet pea dumplings, and green curry were mediocre and the curry was awful. Expensive short pours of wine was the nail in the coffin."

"I'm an avid Thai food eater and whilst this is good food with authentic inclusions such as holy basil it is a little on the expensive side. Green curries, a staple in thai cooking, shouldn't cost this much."

"I tried this as a 2nd date spot before a movie at the recommendation of a coworker. The food was very good (definitely try the surf and turf app for 2) but it was more of a Thai/American fusion menu. They offer the mandatory noodle staples typical of a thai restaurant (pad thai etc.), but they also carry some very interesting alternatives. The decor gives the feel of that modern vintage look - it's not the most romantic spot but definitely works for a casual date or a precursor to a movie. I will be going back again."

"I'm very happy I stumbled upon this restaurant (thankful to Opentable b/c I would not have gone there if it had not been on Opentable and thankful because I had a great meal and a professional and helpful waiter. My table shared the Surf & Turf for an appetizer and I had the Soft Shelled Crabs as an entre. My friend had a more typical green curry. We enjoyed the food. I always ask waiters what they recommend and our waiter hit the bullseye with his suggestions. The ambiance was great, but we ate there late and it was fairly quiet. There are some larger bench like tables, too."

"The staff was very friendly and helpful. The dishes we ordered were somewhat inconsistent however. The papaya salad was bland and the lobster tom yum special was not great but the rustic chicken soup was very good. The lobster ravioli was excellent but my friends were not blown away by the green curry or the laab. I would try again but my friends were not very thrilled."

"The food was fine for location and price point. Stinks that they felt the need to include a 20% tip for a group of only 3 people but that's another story. The service was poor. Our table seemingly had 5 people covering it and the only time people came over was to take the order, bring the food and and get the check. Our water was consistently empty and no one came over during the meal to check on anything. We had our plates empty for at least 20 minutes and still no one asked if we were done. We sat by the kitchen and we had many people pass RIGHT BY our table. We had to chase down someone just to get our bill. Of course, we paid and they came back immediately to have us sign. I can understand if the place was busy but it wasn't."

"I'll be honest - I wasn't expecting much from a restaurant that had availability 3 days before a Friday night for a group of 10 people. Boy was I surprised! The food was great and really inventive (I had the papaya pad thai and my husband had the squid ink noodles with calamari), the drinks, even though lacking liquor, were really tasty and not too sweet, the cost was very reasonable and the service - WOW! Living in NYC, I never have high expectations for service at any restaurant that isn't $$$$ and I was pleasantly surprised by the attentive and friendly service here.
Overall, great food, drink and service and a reasonably priced meal make Ngam a restaurant I would return to and recommend to others!"

"House-made curries and sauces really do make a difference! The best Thai meal we've eaten outside of Bangkok. Great specials and an equally great regular menu. Each dish was excellent. We also had appeatizers and soup, and everything was delicious. Add to the great food a very personable chef/owner and Ngam is a winner. Can't wait for our next trip to New York."

"The food is indescribably good. I lowered my face into the "Cutie Duckling" to let the smells wash over and in me. We had some hits and some misses. My first cocktail was weak, but when I told our server that I wanted my second one strong, he was happy to oblige. I wasn't sure how I felt about the oyster shooter, but the scallop served in a martini glass was perfect and interesting.
Everything else was great. Grilled calamari was juicy and flavorful, the sweet pea kao suey with dumplings was incredible (spicy, but you can tell your server to go easy on you), and the jasmine panacotta with lychees -- UNREAL."

"Atmosphere and service was good. Was really looking forward to brunch with a thai influence. I couldnt be more disappointed. Ordered the Thai omelet with shrimp, it arrived missing 2 ingredients (ground pork and turnip, as the menu states). Omelet was greasy and bland, had 3 pieces of shimp and sat limp over a bed of bland white rice.
The only item with any flavor were the specs of sriracha decorating my plate.

"Ngam is a small place with an active tame-out clientele. It's not fancy, with a low key atmosphere that is neat and modern. Menu was varied, not your standard Thai restaurant, and we found several appealing, well flavored items. You could make a nice meal from the "small plates." "The food is fantastic and the overall experience is all down to Chef Hong's approach to her diners. It's an open kitchen so she is visible working and expediting, and makes it her business to regularly go around the tables to chat to guests and see how they're enjoying the food and the experience. All in a friendly, natural way. It's highly unusual for such a talented chef to do this, and makes a dinner at Ngam very special. Her approach rubs off on the wait staff who are all great. The restaurant itself is also the right mix of cosy and cool. Highly recommend."

"The food here is wonderful and chef Hong makes you feel at home. We came in for dinner before heading to a movie and loved everything even though it took MUCH longer than it should have. Without us even complaining Chef Hong came over to our table, apologized, gave us two drink vouchers for our next visit and comped us for one of our entrees. We went back a second time last week and were just as impressed by the food and everything came promptly. Check Hong again came over to our table and thanked us for coming back. I would recommend Ngam to anyone who likes inventive Thai food."

"Hands down, NGAM currently offers the best Thai food possible in NYC. In addition to the standards, they have a great number of unique, innovative Thai dishes that you can't find at your local Thai place. And the best part is, the food is just outstanding!I've never tried something i don't like there. The drinks are equally delicious, and all of this comes at a relatively reasonable price. The only downside is that this place gets crowded and they don't have a great spot to wait for your table--as in, very little space. Reservations are generally respected, but they are often running 10-15 minutes late, so as long as you know that, its ok."

"the food was edible but not remarkable in any way. we had the appetizer platter with multiple items on skewers e.g. calamari, pork wrapped in bacon, shrimp - the dipping sauces were very good. we also had the pad thai with shrimp and vegetables - had a real seaweed taste that i did not like. the brownie dessert however was very tasty. i love thai food and this just didn't deliver for me. i would not go back there again."

"Had an excellent meal solo sitting at the bar. I was a little uncomfortably close to the prep area (I liked it, but not sure it would be for everyone).
Hostess greeted me promptly while also dealing with a group reservation - very smooth
Server struggled with guiding me through the menu, but luckily chef noticed and made her way over to talk with me a little.

"Had an amazing time celebrating a birthday here with a large group of 10. The service was slow - which was expected since there seemed to be only 3 servers for a packed restaurant. With Chef Hong's recent episode of Iron Chef America, this was also expected. Chef Hong came by to greet every table at least twice, which was very unexpected and so pleasant. She was warm and gracious, and even sent dessert our way once she knew we were celebrating. The food was EXCELLENT. The spring roll appetizer was one of the best I've ever had in the city. The butternut squash in my curry was a little undercooked at first, but while it was in the iron cast skillet, it continued to cook. The presentation of the food was beautiful. Would highly recommend."
