Sleek and modern with one foot firmly in the Old World is the feeling at Perbacco. The restaurant boasts a brick wall original to the historic 1913 Hind building, with other touches such as a bar top and floor tiles made from white Carrara marble. With 16 seats at the bar and 7 more intimate tables, Perbacco creates an atmosphere for a glass of wine or a light bite. Perbacco also features 2 dining rooms, one on the main floor and a smaller one on the Mezzanine, which has the added allure of serving as "theater", with windows to watch all the action in the kitchen below. Chef Staffan Terje strives to cook the finest food reflecting the Italian regions of Piemonte and Liguria. Handcrafted, house-made salami, prosciutto and other meats are featured at the salumi bar. Filled pastas, a tradition in Piemonte, range from the traditional ravioli to the more exotic agnolotti. Main courses feature traditional dishes such as Bollito Misto and milk-braised pork shoulder with Savoy cabbage.

"I was there with two others for a business lunch. Service was wxcellent and food was great. We had ample time to conduct business without intrusions, yet the waiter was able to get our orders and serve lunch in a timely manner. Thank you."

"Umberto is always there and oversees the dining room in a professional manner. You do not notice it but he insures that everyones dining experience is perfect. The food is great and reminds me of home, which is Piemonte Italy."

"I had the risotto with asparagus and mint. It was a great combination. Our table shared the brussels sprouts and the potatoes and the potatoes were good but the brussel sprouts were awesome. The service was good. The couple of times I've been there it's been busy at lunch. I really like the decor of the lower level; the upper level is a bit blah."

"Food was very good. The service was very attentive and accomodating. We decided to order the "bis" which was two pastas to share. The portions were tiny on our plate. While the food was rich and we didn't need a lot more, it was about two tablespoons of each type of pasta for a $15.00 plate. I would recommend ordering a full portion and sharing it at the table. We were disappointed with the recommnedation of doing this by the waiter. Otherwise, the wines were delicious, the pasta and appetizers quite good and overall a pleasant experience."

"Wow, this plates gets better every time we do here. The kitchen is definitely hitting on all cylinders. There are a number of great Italian places in the city right now, but I'd be hard-pressed to say there is one better than this. They have a great wine program as well, with a number of reasonably-priced wines available by the glass, as well as in .25 L, and 0.5 L carafes. The ambience is great, although I prefer the downstairs rooms to the upstairs. We also tried a few specialty cocktails for the first time. Very, very good as well. I highly recommend this restaurant."

"We've now been to Perbacco's twice and have truly enjoyed each meal. Each time our party ordered a different dish and loved what they got. Especially love the desserts. The panna cotta and "ugly cookies" are favorites. We're definitely coming back."

"Always reliable fresh pasta and other dishes with a Piemonte flavor by a chef who knows his stuff. Substantial wine list excellently served. Hard to find fault with the place. Only wish: it could be open later into the night, as opposed to following San Francisco habit of closing down at 11 PM or so.
The vitello tonato and the pasta sugo dishes are as good as anything I have had in Piemonte, in the better places.
Absolutely a must for Italian food lovers."

"OpenTable's option to send special menu concerns is helpful; I have celiac disease and the wait staff went so far as to say they had received a note about my dietary restrictions (no gluten), which was very helpful, as they were prepared to discuss the menu option on those terms.

The food was a bit low on value - good quality and well prepared scallops entree, but very minimal accompaniment, so that unless you ordered several dishes you weren't well fed. That makes sense with the half-size orders offered, which is a nice option, but when ordering a full size entree I think you should be able to expect more."

"They put the two top tables too close together so you might as well be eating with the people next to you. I would rather sit at the bar so I coud have enjoyed a more intimate night with my wife. "I took my daughter to this restaurant for her birthday as she works near the restaurant and had herself been there several times and enjoyed it. We found the food to be delicious, the service excellent, our waiter very knowledgeable and helpful. I would definitely go there again."

"Terrific Italian food, maybe the best I've had in San Francisco. The offerings are complex and rewarding. The wine list is very complete with excellent Italian wines. The only possible criticism I would make is that there are too many wait and service persons, so there is a continual filling of water glasses and taking items away.....it would have been more peaceful without so much of that. But this is a great "foodies" restaurant and I will definitely be returning."

"Good food at Perbacco. I didn't care for where they seated us (near the kitchen). However, the service and food were pretty good. Extensive italian wine list but did not see a sommelier. "My second visit to this restaurant and my experience was every bit as enjoyable as the first visit. My daughter with was with me and her experience was equal to mine. When asked would she return to this restaurant her reply was 'oh yes, and I will bring Eric (husband) with me'. My daughter is vegetarian and she pointed out that it was unusual to have such a wide choice on the menu!!. Food plating was excellent and the waiting staff were attentive and friendly without 'being in your face'."

"Perbacco was a fantastic place to spend a 3 hour boozy lunch with girlfriends. The food was top-notch... we ordered the risotto and four other starters for the three of us, and really enjoyed eating this way. Service level was overall quite good, although I would have appreciated a bit more personality from our waiter. Oh well, can't have everything. It came pretty close, though."

"Second time at Perbacco, and the food was good. Nothing too memorable, but was tasty. The duck breast was the best dish of the night for our group of 4x. The service was really the thing that stood out during the night. This is the type of service you could admire and need to applaud the entire staff. "We were particularly impressed when after given a table where one of the bench seats was NOT comfortable (split bench) the waiter offered an adjacent table without a hassel. The serving staff was most efficient and pleasant without being intrusive. It was a birthday celebration and the waiter 'sprang' for one of the desserts (the birthdayboy), again, a nice gesture without fanfare."

"Spectacular food, and for about half of what I might have expected to pay for what we had. (Well, I'm from New York, but even so, I know that you can easily pay NY prices in San Francisco, and I have.) I have suggested to a dozen people already that they go to Perbacco. A marvelous restaurant. All four of us had different appetizers and entrees, and every one of them was outstanding. And we are demanding. I wouldn't bother leaving this feedback, actually, without being highly enthusiastic. Just wish the restaurant was in NYC."

"The food here was terrible and the experience was greatly disappointing. To qualify that I am not just "flaming" a restaurant, I went here on Valentines Dinner and was hopeful for at least a basic SF "nice" night out. I know SF, I know our restaurants, this was way below average.

The ambiance of the restaurant is better suited for a loud business lunch (there are diner booths as you walk in) and perhaps it's my fault for looking to the financial district for a good nighttime restaurant (but Aqua, Farallon, etc. are on the same block).

Beet salad and Pear Salads = bad ; Pasta course = average; Fish Entree = God Awful"

"The food was exotic in the sense that it had rabbit, duck, foie gras, etc and lots of different types of mushrooms, great use of unusual spices. Perbacco had an extensive wine list. The service was excellent and the restaurant did an amazing job of making our special occasion truly special. The house special hazelnut meringue cookies were amazing."

"My son had recommended this place to us. I surprised my wife with a night at the Meridian and a great dinner at Perbacco for Valentines, the day we met 43 years ago. We had a wonderful time. The food from the mixed green salad she had and the beet salad I consumed, to the entrees - anginlotti pasta for my wife and the pork shoulder for me - was spectacular. We also enjoyed the desert: chocolate moose bar! This was a decadent chocoholics dream come true. We had a delicious proseco to drink with the meal. If anyone were to ask for a place to eat in the Embarcadero area, I would send them to Perbacco."

"We went there for Valentine's day, just the two of us and they stuck us in series a three two-person tables right next to other couples, like a Cheesecake Factory. Not intimate at all. Very noisy place. The food though was outstatnding and the Pinot Grigio was some of the best we have ever had. They said it was imported from Italy for serving in the restaurant and not for sale in the states."

"Was there on Valentine's Day...the ambiance was alright, could use some good music and better lighting. But really who cares because the food is OUTSTANDING!! We had help picking our bottle of wine (from an incredibly expensive list, though), and the waiter was awesome. I had the scallops, they were melt-in-my-mouth delicious. My husband had the duck, which was also delicious, & we especially enjoyed the sides of brussel sprouts and baby carrots! Not to forget the desserts...mmmmmmm. Do not pass up trying dessert wines, we each had a glass of something different and shared, and I recommend doing that so you can taste a couple. They were unbelievable! A sure hit, this place is fantastic."

"Perbacco has always been a favorite. We request second floor dining so as to mute the noise. The food is excellent and
the service good. The Tajarin with Sugo is a perennial favorite. The wine is excellent and they can serve it in decanters
from 0.25L to 0.50L and it is reasonably priced. The attention to detail in the Italian cooking is rare to find in most

"Have eaten here for dinner with friends and business associates. The food continues to exceed expectations even here in SF where great restaurants abound. Service has always been informative, never rushed. Love the valet service at the door. The reservations/ hostess-host staff is friendly and works hard to accommodate your seat preferences (with a smile), unlike some places where the "we'll do the best we can" feels like you just asked for the world. Request upstairs or the back wall downstairs for quiet conversation. If you're with a group stick to the first floor and enjoy the people watching! Took my friend for her birthday and they gave her a handwritten card thanking her for celebrating at their restaurant. Nice. I'll be back."

"I was disappointed with Perbacco. Four of us went together and we each had a different appetizer and a different entre. We all shared so it was a good sampling of the food. The carne crude and the angolotte were both tasteless. The fritto misto was ordinary. the butter nut raviolis were very good. For entres, the spare ribs were fine, nothing special...same with the pork shoulder (again, not much flavor) and the sea bass. The duck was very good. the dessert (chocolate mousse bar) was excellent.
We had to ask for water on two occasions. When we asked for a dessert menu, the waiter brought the bill instead. Service was rushed and spotty. OK, but too expensive for the experience. Not a top 100 restaurant. Won;t go back."

"The service was attentive, and the food was really fantastic. We started with the bresaola, which was a good, light way to start, and then shared the 3 pasta plate, which was fantastic. I love that you can pick any of the three pastas to share and really get a great taste of the menu. The pork shoulder sugo was rich, homey and delicious, and the butternut squash ravioli, had a great mix of sweet and savory, soft and crunchy. The short rib ragu was also excellent. Overall I was really pleased with the meal."

"Dined there for the first time on Saturday.

I would highly recommend the Salumi appetizer plate (unless, of course you are a vegetarian). We ordered the small and there was more than enough for two. As a result of having the appetizer and salad, we passed on regular entrees and just had pasta dishes. The pasta menu is extensive and you can select from two sizes.

The service could have been more attentive (the waiter had a large area to cover), but the bussers and water guys were quietly efficient.

Perbacco is just a few blocks from the Ferry Building, which is a great place to hit prior to dinner. Parking would not be easy but both Bart and Muni Metro are a block away."

"I was a disappointed when I didn't see the Short Ribs on the menu for lunch (1/28/10), so I got the Hanging Steak. It wasn't as good as the Short Ribs but it was okay. Although I have to say I liked to salad that came with the Hanging Steak.

At the end of the day, I will always go back to Perbacco. It is one of my favorites, maybe I should go in the evening for my Short Ribs, hopefully!"

"Eating at Perbacco is always a pleasure. I wanted something less than a full-blown dinner and opted for the bresaola and pappardelle with short rib ragu and horseradish. The bresaola with celery root salad was a good beginning (although perhaps 4 extremely thin slices of bresaola was a bit short). The pappardelle was done exactly right and the hint of horseradish provided an interesting note to the excellent short rib ragu. All accompanied by a pleasant quarto of Perbacco's house Langhe Nebbiolo. Service was excellent--I was attending a performance at ACT and the staff ensured that everything came off without a hitch. The complementary bits of chocolate and nougat rounded off the end nicely."

"My first visit to Perbacco will definitely not be my last. I found the place through OpenTable.com and decided to give it to try for a lunch meeting. The food was excellent and the service spot on. The wine list was impressive, albeit a bit pricey. Other diners seemed to be enjoying themselves as well and people at neighboring tables were even sharing stories about the great food. I will certainly eat here again. Warning...if you are looking for a quiet restaurant, this isn't the place for you."

"Food was disappointing for the price. Ordered 4 dishes, the salumi plate which was the highlight. Pretty good but not as good as in Italy. Ordered 2 pastas, Agnolotti Dal Plin and the Pappardelle. Neither one was al dente, flavors were OK, but nothing mind-blowing. The most disappointing dish was the black sea bass...OVERCOOKED (tough) and way over-garnished and much too salty.

Decor was nice, but very noisy, tables are very close together.

Food was a huge disappointment after the hype...this is Italian food for the AMERICAN palate. For authentic Italian, go to La Briciola or Ristorante Milano instead!"

"It was a long wait from the time that we arrived and informed the receptionist that we had a 1:00 p.m. reservation to the time that we actually got a table. "The food at this visit to Perbacco was up to its normal excellent quality. I didn't enjoy being seated in the low-ceilinged back room, but that was just a result of me arriving too close to the noon rush. "I stopped going to Perbacco for a while because it had gotten so crowded. Now that they are preparing to open a second restaurant, the tables are back to being nicely spaced. And I'm thrilled because the food is SO GOOD. The pastas are all stand-outs; the 5 hour sugo is my favorite. And there's a terrific variety of main courses. We tried the pork shoulder and the short ribs (guess we were in a slow food mood) and both were excellent. The service is done in teams which I always find confusing, but except for being offered parmesan a few times, it seemed to work."

"I visited Perbacco for an early dinner on New Year's Eve. It was our first visit to the restaurant which was recommeded by a friend. We had lots of questions about the menu and all were answered respectfully and knowledgeably by the attentive wait staff. The dungeness crab gnocchi and short ribs were delicious as were all the appetizers and desserts. We'll definitely return."

"Choice of Main Entree is not thoughtful; except for Filet Mignon & Swordfish, all items were low priced ingredients that does not translate to the prices.

Beginning with the Salumi platter - felt like it has been dragged through the Bonneville Salt Flats; presentation was weak. Nothing was offered as a counter balance to the saltiness and fat content of the salumi; should have been served with fruit, dried fruit or some form of raw vegetable.

The gnocchi was excellent. Crab Risotto was very good, although there was a miniscule amount of crab. The Braised Pork Shoulder completely lacked flavor and depth.

The service was unattentive.

At this point we decided to exit without ordering dessert. Disappointing, lack of value for money"

"Food was well prepared and very tasty. One dish, an appetizer which was sort of a meat stew with a tomato based sauce was just average. Was unhappy they served main entree along with the pasta course rather than afterward which is somewhat standard. Italian wine from Sardinia was very flavorful."

"We went for lunch before strolling around SF to see the holiday decorations. The food and service were very good. Every thing that we were served seemed to be made with love and care. I wish I was going to lunch today. Our reservations were at 1:00 on the December 23rd and the place was hopping. We were seated right on time. Even though the place was busy we were not rushed thru our lunch."

"Our party of 4 had an early holiday dinner. for some reason bar patrons congregated at the entrance and the noise created an excitement upon entering. Fortunately we were lead to a quieter dining area on the upper level coz we want to chat without shouting. We started with the garlic anchovy bath for raw vegetables which whetted our appetite; the grilled squid was very tender. one guest had risotto and one had gnocchi, both were surprised at the generous 1/2 size portions. my 3rd guest had the rabbit and I had the winter sausage and blood pudding which I loved and we both had a nice little portion to take home. for dessert, we shared the "ugly" cookies which were angelicly light and sweet; the apple/pear crostada has a homemade goodness."
