Sorrel Urban Bistro
Born out of a shared vision to bring affordable farm-to-table dining to Houston, restaurateur Ray Salti and Executive Chef Soren Pedersen have collaborated to create Sorrel Urban Bistro, a casually elegant, fresh design featuring an ever-changing blackboard menu of organically focused cuisine. Sorrel represents the second culinary collaboration between Salti and Pedersen, who also are partners at Ray’s Grill, a highly-lauded farm-to-table concept in Fulshear, TX, 20 miles West of Houston.
In addition to a diverse daily menu selection featuring local organically grown produce and meat, sustainable fish and wild game, Sorrel offers a charcuterie bar with a wide variety of salami, sausages and prosciutto, both imported and housemade, along with artisan Texas cheeses, handcrafted breads and more.
Beverage service includes seasonally inspired cocktails, artisanal beers and 200 plus wines (25 percent organic.)

"The food was excellant and even though it was very busy since it was Mother's Day, the wait staff went out of their way to make sure we were all happy, they even brought my granddaughter a different entree when she wasn't pleased with her first choice."

"We took a business contact from Australia there for brunch, it was Mother's Day and they had a special menu. We sat outside as the weather was nice. We each had an appetizer and main and shared a dessert, wine choices were a good assortment and nicely priced. The only small negative was the service which may have been a bit off because of the busy day but each time a course was served another server swooped in to remove one dish and take it to a different table! Made us laugh as it reminded me of Faulty Towers. Our client insisted on treating us and paid, my wife explained tipping protocol here. Later on my wife commented how good lunch was and so inexpensive. I did the math and realized they never ran our bar tab for the wine. Ooops!"

"Although I liked Sorrel, I had several restaurant owners and a food consultant in my group on May 5th that were not impressed with the food quality or amount.
The two foodies/ restaurant owners ( and exceptional cooks) both had the same complaint about the same dish. It was the dish with the beef and farm eggs on top. Both said beef was extremely tough and ironically enough both left the meat part of it. They were sitting on opposite ends and never shared with each other but both shared with me and my other guests. Since this was a special occasion for a client's 50th birthday, I was somewhat disappointed that no one brought it to my attention or the attention of the server.
The amount of food served is a very small amount."

"We really enjoyed our evening at Sorrel. My wife & I had a 6pm reservation on a Saturday evening. We had a quick drink at the bar to check-out the craft cocktail offerings and while the list wasn't as extensive as some places in town, there were plenty of interesting choices. We moved to the table and were seated at one of 4-5 tables that are situated right along the server's alley with a full-on view into the kitchen - awesome ! They were serving 2 of my all-time favorite things - squash blossoms and sweetbreads so my choices were easy. Both were excellent and perfectly-sized. My wife had foie gras to start and the filet mignon. Again, both were very nice in presentation and taste. We'll be back to explore more of this menu."

"We took our family for a Saturday lunch to celebrate our son's birthday. We also had our 4 year old grandson with us. The waiter was wonderful with our grandson and even came out to say goodbye to him after lunch. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The fried oysters were fabulous, and the complimentary dessert they brought our son with a candle was an absolutely delicious berry shortbread. We had only been there for dinner before which has always been delicious. Lunch was more laid-back and quieter, and we enjoyed a relaxed, delicious lunch.."

"Have really enjoyed dinner at Sorrel in the past, but today's lunch was boring.I started with the chicken, vegetable & rice soup which was boring to look at and basically flavorless.It badly needed salt, something to give it some flavor--maybe some herbs or spices--and more veggies.And the rice was crunchy!For my main I got an appetizer lobster cake. It was really a rice cake with very little lobster and what lobster there was was way overcooked and tasteless.It was fried with a nice crispy outside, but most of the lobster pieces migrated to the edges and were like shoe leather.The salad & sauce on it was good. My husband got a Seared Golden Tile which was cooked nicely and had nice sauce, but wasn't great.Don't know what happened to them!"

"The food was excellent - but the noise is oppressive. This is one of those restaurants with -0- sound dampening - in fact - it is a design that magnifies the sounds of other dinners conversations. There was a table of young ladies having a wonderful lunch and laughing. One of them had a finger nails on chalk laugh that went right up your spinal column. So, even though the food was really good - unless the weather if good enough to sit outside - we won't be going back."

"I went to Sorrel with a friend for lunch on a Saturday. I ordered the fish on top of grits. It wasn't horrible but was overcooked and over-seasoned; I would not order it again. My dining companion had the fried oysters and really liked it. We split the warm chocolate brownie dessert (w/ an airy chocolate mousse on top), and that was outstanding. I would return for that, probably after dining elsewhere. I wanted a cafe latte or plain coffee with skim milk, or at least a low-fat option, but that was not available.
The waiter was attentive without being interfering, and he allowed us to sit and visit as long as we liked, which I really appreciated."

"We've been to Sorrel several times, and it's always fun because the chef is so willing to experiment, and the food is fresh. However, it is quite expensive and it's always possible an experiment may go awry.
I ordered a buffalo strip steak that the waiter recommended I have cooked medium rare (I'd initially asked for medium) so it would be more tender. But when it arrived, it was so tough it was very hard to cut. In fact, when I first tried, it flipped on its side, knocking the onions atop it into my lap. The waiter replaced it with a tender filet, but it was cooked rare with a cool center. Tasty, but not the way I really like it.
Not sure we'll go back."

"We were practically the only people in the restaurant, so did get great service. However, I ordered their house salad, & it was so full of only one "Gag-inducing" green, which was quite hard to swallow, so I had to send it back. Now really, that's a bit unacceptable. "We have dined at Sorrel a number of times and this was the first time we have been disappointed. We were a group of 4 and the table provided was too small to accommodate us. We noted that a number of other parties of 4 were on larger tables and parties of 2 were on similar sized tables to the one we were allocated. With wine glasses, water glasses, main courses and side dishes, the table was too small for us to have an enjoyable meal. The appetizers were fine but the Paella main course included mussels, one of which was off. Although we advised the waiter, there was no response from the restaurant. The service overall was good, but the cramped eating conditions spoilt the evening."

"Unfortunately on this visit we were not impressed. The one dish was too spicey even for our normally not-phased-by-spices tastebuds and the others were only so-so. The first server was also quick to say a particular drink was no longer available (and had not been for "a long time" ... 2 weeks) even though they still had all the ingredients and were using them for another drink. The second server said, "no problem."
And then there was the issue of our table location - right next to a large-top table that was sectioned off by curtains that were drawn behind my elderly parents. My mother was continuously bumbed as servers and guests walked on the other side, and nothing was done when we ask that it be fixed."

"Sorrel is my favorite restaurant in town. We go there every Sunday after church for brunch. The scallops are the BEST! Everything we have ordered has been excellent. The staff are so friendly and happy to see us every week. They stop by and say hi. I look forward to dining with them every week."

"Seated right by a noisy table today when other tables were available. Did not feel like requesting a change. This place does fill up on Sunday usually. You will see every nationality, every denomination (priests included) - very fun and great people watching.
The food is always unique and exciting - can't wait to see the daily menu upon arrival."

"Went for brunch with visitors from out of town and had high expectations based on positive past experience. One entree was undercooked then sat too long at the counter, then one feature was missing, all that while the others had finished their meal. Waiter should have helped avoiding that but did not. We got free dessert but that only partially made up for the unpleasantness. Perhaps they deserve another chance...?"

"look, like Ray's in Fulshear, this place can become your home away from home. Staff and hosts are great. you feel like you belong. Warmly greeted by the Manager, Ernesto,we were offered seats by the kitchen and enjoyed the show. The waiter, Mike R was congenial, helpful, accommodating and took back a drink which was obviously too Jalapeno-ish which was agreed by the bar Manager. He was a"friend" to us and was chatty and helpful. Food was well prepared and tasty like the farm to table concept they employ here and at Ray's. Gestures by Ernesto at the end of our meal made us feel special. WE WILL RETURN."

"Good fresh food, excellent flavors, really top notch. Apple cobbler dessert was perfect. However, the entire dining experience is made less enjoyable by the very loud bar scene and overall dining area acoustics. It was nearly impossible to talk. Otherwise, Sorrel would become our go-to restaurant. Nevertheless, we will return on a weeknight to see if it is any quieter."
