"Nice building but the food was not worth the price. I was disappointed in my appetizer and dinner. I love grilled octopus but the app was very light on the octopus, greasy, and had potatoes which took away from the taste. The $28 Cajun shrimp in the cheese grits were small and had their tails on, forcing you to to dig around to pull off the tails. There No cajun or cheese flavor, little pools of bacon grease in the dish, but the flavor never blended with the meal. I'm not if I saw vegetables on the menu and none came with my or my husband's dinner, so I got caesar salad (bland). That said, the toffee pudding cake dessert was phenomenal (a top 10). And, the waiter did a nice job of running around making sure everyone was taken care of."

"Our table was ready at the time of our reservation and our server was very good. Loved your wine list and your Ginger Lemon Lime martinis. The food itself was very good with a very nice presentation. Luckily our table was near the piano, so we really enjoyed the music too."

"The covered outdoor patio was a very nice setting for a girlfriends' birthday lunch. The restaurant was not at all crowded at noonish on a Thursday, our server was pleasant and very attentive refilling our beverages, our salads and sandwich were delicious and perfect portions. I will definitely return."

"We had Mothers Day brunch there. The food was very good, Although being a brunch, there could have been more food to choose from, We have had Mother' s ay brunch form other restaurants in the vacinity and they seem to have a lot more food to choose from."

"I choose The Gables for Mother's Day because I enjoyed the food, setting, ambiance, and service the last few times I was there. However, Mother's Day was a disappointment as the brunch was not the norm out of the kitchen. In fact, I thought, that for the price, the food was extremely disappointing and totally overpriced. You guys could have done a better job."

"The restaurant is beautiful and has so much potential that I was really sad about having a bad experience here. The food tasted very fresh but didn't have much else going for it. None of the dishes we tried were quite right. The lobster pot pie had a very watery thin broth instead of the thicker cream inside that I expected, the mushroom soup needed seasoning terribly, the pork was just bland and tasteless. Our service was very slow as well, as we waited 40 minutes after being seated to order our appetizers. The valet guys were so sweet and amusing. I had no idea that they would be the highlight of the night!"

"This was our first visit to The Gables. We were visiting the area for a weekend Mother's Day celebration. We were seated at a corner table which made for a quiet ambience which we both appreciated. There were relatively few menu selections clearly reflecting seasonal ingredients availability.
Our entrees, a lamb "porterhouse" for me and a filet steak for my wife were served with very interesting, unusual and very good accompaniments. Also, the menu offered a large and small portion for each entree which I think is an excellent idea. We shared a dessert of a chocolate banana cake which we found to be both unusual and enjoyable.

"I went to this restaurant for "restaurant week" and thought they had good options. My only complaints are that the portion sizes seemed a little small and I had the pork which was unevenly cooked - some pieces were right on and some were too dry and overcooked. It was a bit noisy due to a large group (I think it was a meetup group) sitting near us. I do wonder if they could have seated us in a quieter area. The food was very good and I would definitely go back!"

"Every EXCEPT the food was fine. The food was actually pretty horrible. We started with cold flavorless mushroom soup. Actually had to add salt to everything. The gnocchi were not cooked and a pasty mess. Lobster pot pie was like having canned soup with an a pastry over it. Skip this restaurant and go to the Back Burner!!!"

"What a disappointment! We were so looking forward to a nice lunch date but instead our date was ruin by extremely poor service and below average food. The kale salad was a joke, it was tasteless and so small, I was speechless. It was literally about 2-3 forks full r that was it! What made it worst was the service was extremely poor as we had to wait for a long time for our drink and food. We were starving! Definitely will not go back again. What a shame for a place that has so much potential."

Halfway through the meal the place got crowded, but the patio was still empty. Kind of irritated me a little. Food was great, servicen was great except it was a little rushed. The noise was not good for a romantic dinner. You had to yell to hear your table mates. Overall, pretty good."

"Wonderful setting - tented outdoor area w/ stone work & fountain are magic. ALL staff were friendly & helpful. Food presention & taste were great. Difference between good & great is details. Gables can be great but for me was just very good. Maybe just bad timing - will go back again. Details: ambiance - wonderful. Seating friendly & promptly, drink & food orders taken in a relaxed but reasonable fashion. No utensils until we asked (food had arrived), had to ask again for napkins - not a big deal but a detail. Mushroom soup appetizer is light yet wonderfully flavored, served lukewarm - not a big deal - a detail. Very flavorfully crusted salmon, overcooked, just good not great? "This was our first visit under the current ownership. We were hoping they might have found a way to mitigate the noise, but the place is still ear-splittingly loud when busy. And they installed what have to be the world's most uncomfortable chairs--too narrow at the back so they pinch the hips, and if you're tall and try to tuck your legs under the chair, you run into the curved edges of the legs.
They have a very nice wine list with many reasonably priced offerings. We had the restaurant week tasting menu, and found some of the items to be well intended but a little off--some things were heavily salted (including the bread) and others needed more salt. Main courses and dessert were better than apps."

"We have eaten at The Gables several times-before and since recent new ownership. This was first Restaurant Week visit, and most likely our last during such an event. We requested a particular table based on our previous two recent vivits to the restaurant. We liked the location and the service in the past. Our server during this visit didn't ask what we thought of any of the 4 courses of the meal. Our 'fair' service rating is essentially generous. It seemed like our waiter would have been more attentive if he 'recognized us as regulars'...he plopped the check on the table assuming we wanted it nothing else.

"I appreciated the warm greeting as we entered The Gables for Lunch on a Tuesday afternoon.......I found later that the young girl greeting us was the owner and could not be more impressed of how she spent time checking on all the details for everyone dining. She was very outgoing and welcomed us with ease.
Also, you can tell the waitstaff is happy with the new ownership and changes....its not always easy for them to "go with the flow" of a place changing hands but, it speaks volumes that the staff anticipates success!

"Since we got married here in 2009, we've gone back for several special occasions including our anniversary, which was the reason for the visit this time. The drinks were great. Lots of large groups and a wedding, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Our food was good. One or two small hiccups on the food side, but we enjoyed most of the meal! We love the atmosphere and the decor. The food concern we had was addressed by a manager and taken care of with customer service in mind."

"The pot pie should have been served with a spoon instead of a fork. It was not what I expected and certainly not filling as an entree. It was almost an appetizer quantity of food. The acoustics are terrible. There is very little to absorb sound so if you are going out as a dinner for two you may feel overwhelmed, especially if you are seated near a large party. This was my first visit. I travelled 30 minutes to give this restaurant a try and probably won't return as there are better restaurants much closer to home. The service was absolutely top notch."

"Great food, lovely ambiance, terrible service. We had a reservation, sat down immediately, and then after TEN minutes, I had to stop a waiter to ask him if he could find out if anyone was assigned to our table. When our waiter finally came around it was clear that he was unhappy with taking on an additional table. The service was terrible from start to finish and it wasn't even crowded for the majority of the time that we were there. The food was excellent so I would consider giving them a second chance, but not sure it would be any different."

"Very attentive service, however, there is a very limited menu, The halibut choice was good, but the sides of succutosh, ehh. The lobster pot pie was returned to the kitchen. Very soupy and little in it, ambitous try, but it should be removed from the menu or fixed. Mushroom souip was excellent, which is what I would expect from a restaurant in the Kennett Sq area. The chocolate banana cake howver was excellent as was the coffee."

"This was our first visit here. Very nice atmosphere. Beautiful courtyard that would be lovely to dine at in warmer weather.
Service was good and so was the food. If I had to nit-pick, my negatives would be that the noise level was really high. My husband was sitting right next to me and I had a tough time hearing him,
There may be tables upstairs; next time I will request one of those. Another thing to improve on: the runner brought over our cheese plate and didnt point out which cheese was what. 4 minutes later,
After we had begun eating, our server came over to describe it to us.
Overall, we will be back."

"When my salad was served with so much pecorino that the arugula and dandelion couldn't even be tasted, the server apologized profusely. The manager took it off the bill and kept offering to get me something else even though I kept saying no. It exhausted me. My filet mignon arrived perfectly cooked but so oversalted I wondered if the cook did it on purpose. The vegetables were fine. My husband's mushroom soup was excellent and lobster pot pie was filled with chunks of lobster. It was very mild with no special flavor. The noise was so high that the piano player couldn't be heard except for an occasional flourish. We might try it for brunch but won't come back for dinner."

"This was our first visit to the Gables. My husband and I took my mother to have Easter Brunch. Every hot item on the buffet was cold and looked like it had been sitting out way too long. The manager sat on a stool outside the kitchen twiddling his thumbs the entire time we were there. The sad thing is the reception staff,wait staff, and valet were wonderful. Too bad the food didn't match the service. We won't be back."

"We were there for Easter Brunch and the food was wonderful. The restaurant was crowded but there wasn't any issues with standing in a long brunch line. My only complaint was that we were seated in the patio which was covered with a tent. It was quite chilly outside and we asked to be seated inside or closer to the heating unit. The hostess was quite nice but was not able to accomodate us. We ate our meal wearing our coats. Possibly the patio could use another heating unit."

"Beautiful builiding, bar and dining room. The outside patio looked very nice too, but we were there for dinner in March. Ambiance, mood, energey, decor, atmosphere were all incredible. But service was really poor, it really took away from our meal. I was so turned off by our waitress that I think it made the food seem worse than it really was."
