"We enjoyed the restaurant and outside (albeit a bit sunny) seating. Somewhat boring menu with the typical standard food. We were there for mother's day and they served a chocolate honey bun at the BEGINNING of the meal...huh?"

"We haven't eaten there for a couple of years. The food/service was always fantastic. On this occasion I invited three people, new to Shugrues, to celebrate a 90th birthday. The quality of food was embarrassing. I had a Ruben sandwich which came on toasted bread, not grilled as is customary. The meat was so tough I couldn't bite through it. It was even difficult to cut it with a knife. Another ordered a hamburger. She said it tasted like a freezer burger and only ate half of it. The string beans were too partially cooked to bite through. Those were left. The other two dishes were acceptable but my guests said they would not eat there again. The wait staff was excellent."

"We have visited Shugrue's in years past and found the food to be consistent. The view from the deck is amazing, and the primary reason to go. The service, though, is spotty. Our server was slow, seemingly confused, and appeared to be unhappy to be working. It was a downer on what could have been a good dining experience, as the food was tasty and the view was, as always, great."

"As the restaurant's name implies, it's on a hillside, and there's a killer view of Sedona's red rocks, especially from the patio. Service was friendly and adequate. Unfortunately the featured entree of crab-stuffed mahi-mahi was almost tasteless, and the side dishes were uninspired. Maybe there are other dishes on the menu that are more successful."

"The service at Hillside was fair. The waitress was friendly, but swamped. We never received the bread that was supposed to come with our meal, even after we asked about it a few times. When we confronted the waitress she did give us our coffees free of charge. The food was great! My steak was cooked perfectly, but could have used a little more seasoning. My boyfriends Mahi Mahi was good"

"Had dinner reservations for 6:30, but arrived 45-min early. Chose an inside table in lieu of the patio in that the weather was cool & breezy. Great view, nonetheless, from our spot near the window. Menu selection was very good - shared a lamb shank & rib-eye steak cooked to perfection - both very good & filling. Had to drive to Phoenix after dinner, so limited our wine selection to what was available by the glass (unfortunately, a very limited selection). Nice, quiet atmosphere - we especially enjoyed our server, Zlatko, from Zagreb, Croatia (my wife is Croatian as well). We hit the road well satisfied with our dinner experience, service and the awesome sunset over the Red Rock Secret Mountains around Sedona - Hvala, Zlatko - Ajde Zbogom!"

"My wife and I were on vacation in Sedona and had been told we had to have dinner on the outside deck near sunset to watch the amazing colors across the mountains. Although the sky didn't cooperate with us that night (went from blue to black without any change in color), the food and the service was amazing. Since it was a cool evening, the hostess provided my wife with a blanket (she didn't need to use it) and the wait staff was very prompt. We each tried one of the two specials they had that evening, and the food was superb. I had the shrimp cocktail as an appetizer, which came with 5 of the biggest shrimp I have ever eaten! We will definitely come back on our next trip."

"Needs a lot of updating for the prices they charge. Took my husband there for his 40th birthday. Was expecting a nice restaurant but they only charge "nice" restaurant prices. The food was average at best and they didn't have enough servers so our wait was long for drinks, food, etc. Very cheaply decorated, small, tables crowded together, reminded us more of a Village Inn. The views are great if you get the right table but the view is better of the people sitting right next to you at a table. We were disappointed."

"The steaks were very good but slow in coming. We were told the kitchen had new people and were running behind. Our waitress was very helpful and attentave. The view is spectacular but doesn't offset the slow service."

"The fish "special" was NOT good. When they took it back to exchange, it then took over 20 min. and my husband had shared his dinner with me and was finished... thus we did not want a second dinner that much later. The server was not at fault, it was a kitchen issue. Our other experiences have always been superior. this was just a bad entrée choice."

"We ate at Shugrues on January 20, 2013. The table we sat at had the most spectacular views of the red rocks, and we sat together on one side so we cod both enjoy it! The food was delicious from beginning to end! The chef does wonderful things with fish and the filet mignon was grilled to perfection! We wouldn't have changed a single thing. Our waitress was excellent!"
