"We had lunch prior to attending a theater production at Metro Stage. The pre fix lunch menu was wonderful and the service was great. We have already planned a return trip. What a charming restaurant and we feel lucky to have found it!!"

"I had a lovely lunch with my mom at Bastille. The staff was attentive and friendly. The food was excellent, well-seasoned and portioned. I would highly recommend the risotto and the chocolate pot de crème. I look forward to dining there again. My mom throughly enjoyed the hanger steak and pomme frites (I helped finish a few of them as well!)."

"We all have off-nights, which is what I would assume happened here. Bastille is one our absolute favorites in Old Town, and we've had multiple five-star meals here. Sadly, this wasn't one of them. We had a friend in town and wanted to treat him to a great meal, and aside from the wine list and service surrounding the wine (which never disappoints), the server was absent, the mussels were bland (not "lack of salt" bland, just bland), the fish was cooked into jerky, and the steak came to us at the wrong temperature.
We will come back and give it another shot, but we were a little disappointed."

"This was a two-hour parade of food and wine pairings for the 5-course Gourmand dinner. The staff were silent but always present to meet your needs. The server was very knowledgeable of all the offerings and the wines. We asked to take a break between courses to slow down and enjoy everything more, which they were happy to accommodate. When we were done, we were so sated that I was struggling to stay awake on the drive home.
This place is a gem, particularly if you go during the week when the crowd is less. The restaurant appears to have taken out some tables to lower the noise and increase the service level......GREAT DECISION!"

"Bastille has become our favorite go-to French restaurant which we discovered when visiting the adjacent Asian furniture and decoration shop. Many menu items are wonderful adaptions of french standards providing a happy surprise when the server sets down the plate. Risottos are consistently excellent. Restaurant takes pride in local sourcing meats and produce. Hanger steak/frites will rival any bistro in Paris. Our server Daniel was an attentive host always being nearby but not overbearing or intruding. We find the restaurant so convenient being right off the GW Parkway at Bashford Lane and with free street and private lot parking--it's also next to Mt.Vernon bikepath."

"Although charming on the inside, we would have preferred to dine outside (but weather was too cold). We tried the New Zealand short ribs which were very good. My husband was in the mood for a refreshing drink (mojito), but unfortunately, the restaurant was not able to make it for him (no mint). Otherwise, the night went without a hitch. Plan to eat there early, can get very busy especially on a saturday night."

"Bastille is one of my favorite restuarants this however was not my best experience. I went with a friend for a birthday dinner. The waiter was great but the chicken was dry and very small. "Bastille provided a pleasant, quiet retreat and a fine bistrot meal. The basic menu is straightforward, but you don't expect imagination and creativity in a $30 three course prix fixe meal. You get top-notch ingredients well-prepared in simple dishes. The $20 wine pairings were unimaiginative and rendered the meal a bit pricey. Next time I would just buy a bottle to pair with the main course. Bastille is among the quitest restaurants I know, for which I give thanks."

"Went to Bastille with a close friend who I hadnt seen in months and wanted to just sit and have a few glasses of wine...the restaurant is very small and we sat very close to 2 families with small children and felt that we couldn't "let loose" and just talk openly. Not the restaurant's fault...but unfortunate nonetheless. Dinner was just good, not outstanding or special. I had beet salad, roasted chicken and apple pastry for dessert. My friend had asparagus soup, and risotto and something chocolate dessert. Service was very good.

"Great birthday meal...beet salad, pork choucroute: braised cheek, crispy belly & slice of roasted over a bed of sauté cabbage; husband had duck breast over rhubarb. Had dessert at home (my "traditional" white choc mousse cake from the Watergate Bakery) but otherwise would have had something at Bastille. Food presentation was beautiful. Though a gorgeous April evening, we ate inside (about 6 tables were filled outside when we left). Service was very good; waiter brought us side plates to split the salad ourselves so we wouldn't be charged xtra if the kitchen split it for us. This was a repeat visit and I would definitely go back again. Serving sizes were just right for us...not over the top with over the top prices to match"

"We have been going to Bastille off and on for a number of years. It is amazing to see how the restaurant has developed and improved over the years. It is now a lovely, warm, friendly spot with excellent food and wine. WE have dined there twice in recent weeks and will soon return. The owners/chefs are to be congratulated for their vision and perseverance."

"This is my fourth time eating at Bastille and every time it has been a very good experience overall. The service at times seems indifferent, and the wait staff could be more interested in making this a good dining experience, as I felt, as did my colleagues with me that the waiter/waitress we have had could be more friendly without gushing. Sometimes I feel the food is a little oversalted, but I am finding this more true in the US then in Europe or Japan. I can always add salt much to the chef's dismay if it is not salted enough, but I like and need to take in less salt per day. The fish was cooked as it should be, moist and slightly "pink" in the center. Perfect for my liking. All in all I would recommend Bastille to friends."

"We came on a Friday, this was our first time at Bastille. I looked at the website and was hankering for Coq-Au-Vin or Cassoulet but sadly the menu in the restaurant was not the same, the website had not been updated. I got the pre-fix Bistro menu, a great deal, and ordered beet salad, hangar steak and apple tart. Everything was delicious, however I ordered the meat medium, and my husband, who ordered the tenderloin, asked for medium rare. I think they got the orders mixed up in the kitchen as mine was too rare and his was a very thin piece of meat and was overcooked. The waiter tried to give me the tenderloin at first and looked very confused when I said it was the other way around. My husband is not a complainer so we never said anything."

"We have become regulars at what we think is the best food and value in Old Town. Others may get more press but this restaurant consistently delivers a great product. Bastille has recently upgraded a very good wine list to excellent with a sommelier who has an exceptional pedigree. The service is always first rate, the bistro fair is just what you would expect but rarely receive in Paris, and there are even better great wines at very fair prices."

"Situated next to MetroStrage in Alexandria, Bastille delivers a wonderful menu. However, the fixed price of $39 for three courses (small portions) is above range for its location and limited amenities. Our dining experience was sadly marred by poor service: the waitress got the bill wrong three times; the red wine had large chunks of sediments at the bottom of the glass; and my dining companion was charged for a dessert she did not want. On the latter when I made the reservation on the phone, I inquired whether they offered anything for birthday dining and was told a dessert. A charge was not mentioned when I reserved, nor when my guest was asked for a second time if she wanted a dessert. We expected gracious hospitality not refunds."

"It was our second time there and food was as good as we remembered. The place is worth trying as the overall environment is very nice...romantic.
The only problem comes more with the attitude of the Manager, who, after a very nice dinner, when we decided to redeem our 50 Usd Opentable check, to pay part of the dinner, stated that said redemption could only be made after adding a 20% tip in advance, before the redemption. They said that the owner had instructed them to do that, despite that we were a party of 2. First time I have seen it!! We did not want to complain any further, but I just want to call the attention of the owner on this issue...we will, in any case, try again as we like very much the place."

"Delicious food and great service. Our waiter Billy was discreetly attentive and very helpful with wine and food suggestions. Two of us ordered the three-course prix fixe lunch, a good value, while our friend preferred to order a la carte. The mussels were plump and tender and the white wine broth was perfectly seasoned. Our friend's salmon special was also delicious. Appetizer and entree portions were generous, although the restaurant discourages sharing if ordering prix fixe. The noise level was very high after the restaurant filled up, so it's not the place for a quiet chat unless you arrive early. Parking was no problem, a plus in Old Town."

"I've been wanting to try Bastille for awhile and I wasn't disappointed!! Three friends and myself dined and I'm glad we went early because we really had a chance to enjoy the wine, and the restaurant before the crowd. Great little bar which i didn't know was there and wine choices were wonderful. Food was delicious and all of us vow to return!"

"The sommelier was exceptional and so was the wine selection. I was a little disappointed with the foie gras appetizer whereas the toasted bread was the highlight. My salmon was wonderful and cooked perfectly. My guest and husband were perfectly satisfied with their selections (mushroom soup, ceasar salad, mussels, and the duck was amazing."

"I can be terse or rhapsodize. Time is short, so I'll take the former route. My significant other avoids French restaurants -- too much butter, too many calories. She also quickly tires of once-favored dining spots. Bastille is the exception in both cases. Why? Because, she says, few restaurants prepare seafood so well. As for me, I don't eat seafood, but I too sing Bastille's praises. Why? Well, I'd tell you but I promised to be brief."
