Restaurant Reviews for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Il Mulino - Washington DC reservations Il Mulino - Washington DC

1110 Vermont Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20005

Buoníssimo! Born in Greenwich Village, Il Mulino was created with a gourmand’s love for food and a divine calling to bring native dishes from Abruzzo, Italy to the United States. Rated Zagat's Best Italian for over twenty years, Il Mulino's "one-of-a-kind" cuisine speaks for itself in intense, lavishly delicious tones, making for an "outstanding Italian classic" restaurant where "every dish is a masterpiece." Centrally situated in Northwest, just off Thomas Circle, the quietly chic dining room plays host to a steady influx of diplomats, Congressmen, and savvy business travelers who’ve been briefed on where to find the highest-end Italian in the Capital. With an endless parade of complimentary antipasti and a fabulously overwhelming selection of pastas, meats, and delicate desserts, Il Mulino showcases Italian tastes that are unforgettable. The unabashedly European balance of farm-fresh ingredients and impeccable service distinguishes Il Mulino as Washington’s most exclusive asset

Il Mulino - Washington DC Reviews List

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Since moving office to the neighborhood I had been looking for an opportunity to dine here: I was not disappointed. There are so many good choices of fine food. The ambience is superbly sane and quiet, although on a Wednesday night it was not near full. More cozy than i Ricchi. Pastas/veal chop were excellent. The spinach salad is more of a bacon salad, but I was forewarned by the waiter. I just wish it were not such an expense account restaurant. Two with a modest wine and three courses will exceed $300 with tip. That still makes it a great alternative to boring steak houses."

Review 2 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"We had a wonderful experience at Il Mulino. The whole evening was amazing from start to finish. The food and wine were outstanding, but the service was probably some of the best we've ever had. Every attention was paid to detail and even if the food wasn't good (the food was terrific though!!) we would probably return just for the service. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

Review 3 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the food was after reading quite a few negative reviews.

Most of our group skipped appetizers because of all the treats we got gratis. Though it's a pricey restaurant, this helped keep the price down and our meal was quite reasonable.

3 of us split 3 items to make up our entree-- an appetizer gnocchi (gnocchi was a perfect consistency), Osso Bucco (OMG, the saffron risotto was the best I've had and the meat was tender and delicious) and the Bolognese (outstanding!). The dessert plate & fig grappa they brought at the end were the perfect end to the meal.

Overall, Il Mulino is absolutely worth the price. And though the entrees seem expensive, you get a whole lot for your money.

Review 6 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"In my profession I travel more than half time and have become somewhat jaded as to restaurants. That being said, my experience at Il Mulino was a true standout. Arriving as a single diner I was comfortably seated and recieved superb but not overbearing attention. While my intent was to order Osso Bucco and I did, the staff added some truly wonderful additions in what turned out to be one of the best and most remarkable meals I have had in many years including in Italy itself!

This is a must experience . . . don't drink too much and don't do business, just enjoy!!

Review 14 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"We tried the Valentine's Day Tasting Menu. The first course was a Caprese salad with unseasoned overripe tomatoes and fresh, but unevenly sliced and seasoned mozarella. Forty-five minutes later our overdressed and wilted ceaser salads arrived without anchovies or shaved parmesean. Literally seconds later, we were served exceedingly fishy lobster ravioli in a vodka sauce which could have passed for condensed tomato soup from a can. The fourth course, the fillet, came overcharred and unseasoned and smothered in flavorless porcini and button mushrooms with tiny (though tasty) potato bits (think hashbrowns). Finally they gave us a meager dessert "sampler" to share. Three hours and $375 later, we left feeling robbed."

Review 15 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The food was amazing, but the service was probably the worst I have experienced in DC. Though friendly, the waiter was extremely busy and forgot about us on several occassion. We had to ask several times for things, like a glass of wine, the check, etc. I would go back because the food was very good, and I'll give the service a second chance since it might have just been a night off for them. But be warned - it can be very slow."

Review 24 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Il Mulino in New York is my favorite restaurant in the world. Il Mulino in DC has disappointed me twice -- this time, I'm afraid, I'll never go back. The food was only average -- which is shameful for a place that costs at least $100 per person -- and the service was dreadful. I don't understand how the very same meal (their signature rack of lamb) could be so different in each place. If I had paid $25 for dinner, I would have thought it was a pretty good deal. But not for these prices!"

Review 35 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"We went for Restaurant Week, and having read some negative comments before going we were rather concerned. I'm glad we ignored those comments. The waiter was very professional, and helped us with selections. The free appetizers and grappa were nice additions. The eggplant appetizer was excellent. The cheesecake was light and delicious. I had the ravioli stuffed with mushrooms, which was quite good; the sauce was good, but heavy. My husband had the veal, and thought it was quite good. It was a very nice evening...oh and excellent martini’s too. They have $39 three course meals regularly, so we will likely go back to try those."

Review 38 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Our night got off to a rocky start when the bartender showered my friend and I with patronizing compliments to the point where we felt uncomfortable and began looking longingly towards the restaurant for our table. The food was good- not outstanding but good and VERY heavy on the salt. But our whole night was ruined by a seemingly endless parade of waiters who interrupted us constantly, asking to take our plates before we had finished, trying to pour our wine when we had told the last three waiters to hold off and then ignoring our request for a little less 'service' and asking over and over how our dining experience was going. The whole thing was bizarre and irritating. We felt completely harassed."

Review 40 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"This is a decent Italian restaurant. We went during restaurant week, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but the service was excellent - very enthusiastic and attentive. The zucchini appeteaser was delightfully garlicky, but too oily. The Parmesan and hard salami were wonderful. Portions of first and second courses were good - not too big or small. The veal Marsala was more tomatoey than usual, but very tender and good. Mushroom ravioli was a bit heavy, but small and tasty with a delicious sauce. The tiramisu was to die for - light and flavorful. All in all, a good place to go for a bargain meal, but I wouldn't choose it first for someplace special with exceptional offerings."

"Nothing of what could be described a great Italian restaurant in the DC area. Mussels in a tasteless juice, ravioli very disappointing, and the service was just so slow! Only positive note: the Tiramisu!

If this restaurant was to particpate again to the Restaurant week...it should do it well or just NOT do it at all.

"Enjoyed a lovely meal on Sat evening . Greeted and treated well, although a bit of a lag to receive check at the end of meal. Eggplant appetizer and tiramisu dessert were outstanding !My main course was over sauced and while the texture of the fish was good I could not actually taste the fish. The breads and gratis appetizers were a nice touch as well as the complimentary glass of grappa."

"Went during DC Restaurant Week for lunch. Found was good but not outstanding, starter and dessert being the best. Portion size was good. My main course was a dish with marinated chicken pieces. "disappointing given the restaurant's reputation. Food was ok, but salty. Portions were generous however food reminded me of food served at big weddings or conferences, it had that pre-made feel, perhaps because we ordered from the restaurant week menu and those items were made in advance to acomodate the crowds. Nothing special....."

Review 51 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"My experience with Il Mulino coincided with Restaurant Week, so I'm hoping the sub-par experience was a fluke and not standard practice. Arriving promptly for my reservation, I was told to wait at the empty bar - no apology, no explanation - where I sat for 20 minutes without so much as a glance from the bartender until I was seated. I started with the mussels - decent at best - and finished with the ravioli (once a fork finally arrived) - good but cold. Empty water glasses did not sit well, either. After disappearing for awhile, the server returned to ask if we were having the tiramisu, and seemed annoyed when we asked about our other options, and then took an exceedingly long time to return with the check."

Review 52 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Restaurant week's lunch menu was disappointing and lacked signature dishes from the region. The salmon was overcooked and tasteless and the tiramisu and cheesecake were too sweet. The eggplant/ricotta cheese roll was innovative, but overcooked as well (the ricotta was very dry).
Compliments to the chef on the porcini ravioli in a light truffle sauce, which was enjoyed by one of the diners.
Maybe the dinner menu is better. Hopefully, Il Mulino's regular menu ($50 for entrees) is
worth the price.

Review 53 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Went for Restaurant Week. The bread, "slice" of fresh parm, and caprese to begin the meal were terrific. The entree I selected was the veal, served in a mushroom marsala sauce. Being that it was the first time I had ever tried veal I don't really have anything to compare it to. That said, I thought it was tough, fatty, and reminded me of a salisbury steak in a t.v. dinner. It may seem harsh to say that, but if it were not for the great service, tasty appitizers, and the tiramisu I would have given the food an F. My lady had the ravioli and it was fantastic. Not really sure I'd spend full price to eat there as it didn't blow me away to the tune of $50 a person for the regular menu, but the RW prices at $35 each for 3 courses was fine."

"My friend and I went to this restaurant during restaurant week. The food was pretty good, the service was excellent but we were very disappointed when the bill came. We couldn't believe that we had spent a big chunk of the tab on Iced Tea! First of all, the glasses were small, they were filled with mostly ice and were taken away from us by the wait staff as soon as they got close to the bottom of the glass without notice. I understand no refills but.... for iced tea at $4 a glass!?!?! That's just silly. I probably won't go back to this restaurant because I was so upset about the stupid iced tea overcharge."

"This was the BEST Italian restaurant that I have been to in the U.S. All of their extras, like the salami, spicy zucchini, bruschetta before the meal (actually even before the gave us the menu) was a nice touch. And then the Grappa after dessert was a nice treat! The veal marsala was so tasty and tender. You almost didn't need a knife to cut it. The tiramisu was to die for. Not only did it taste wonderful, but the presentation was lovely. My husband and I would definitely go back to this restaurant, as well as recommend it to friends. Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"Il Mulino was bad. I recently had a Restaurant Week lunch there. The host was brusque, refusing to check my briefcase with my coat, and declining our request to dine at the bar. Once seated, it became apparent that the staff was overwhelmed, despite the fact that it was past 1 pm, when the lunch rush should have subsided. No one came to take our order. After some time passed, we were finally able to order. An interminable wait ensued, during which other servers brought by a series of orders that were not ours. When the entrees finally came, I was brought the wrong one -- another wait ensued. It's unclear to me why people flock to this restaurant, but I will not be dining there again."

"The food was great. The service was fine at first, but once the waiter learned that we were there for restaurant week, he acted snobby. We felt like he was talking down to us sometimes. Then when we were done, the restaurant was full, and we waited 15 minutes for our check. The waiter didn't even come over to our side of the restaurant that entire time. Other waiters seemed more attentive to both their regular and restaurant week guests. So I don't think all the waiters were snobby, just that one."

Review 69 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Il Mulino has a wonderful atmosphere. Our servers were very attentive, but not intrusive. Food was pretty good overall. My husband ordered the full rack of lamb which was absolutely divine. The Caesar salad was standard; would have liked to have seen fresh Parmesan shavings instead of the pre-shredded. I ordered the Carpaccio and was very disappointed and actually sent it back. It is served ice-cold and was flavorless. Even though I was not informed it was served at this temperature and was not happy with it, I still had to pay for it. Not very impressive. Overall Il Mulino is a pretty good restaurant and I would return, but was expecting a bit higher quality in the food."

"The mussels w/ white wine were great; the salmon was ok, a bit overcooked; the tiramasu was super. The service was OK. Glad to go during DC Rest. Wk, otherwise it would have been quite overpriced."

Review 76 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Il Mulino serves food, good food. They accomodated our every need and made sure we were happily well fed. When we were seated, they brought us scrumptious appeteasers - chunks of parmesean cheese, slices of salami, spicy grilled zuccini and bruscetta. The porcini stuffed ravioli in a creamy truffle sauce was mouth-wateringly divine. The tableside prepared poached pears with cream and berries was a refreshing dessert that was large enough to share. The tiramisu was light, flavorful and presented in a beautiful plate with cream and berries. The meal was capped off with a complimentary glass of grapa. What a night! Thank you!!!"

Review 77 for Il Mulino - Washington DC

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"A great dining experience! Have been to the original Il Mulino in NY many times; this is just as good. We were there on a Sun. evening, so not sure about the noise level when full but all was wonderful. Perhaps the best Branzino baked in salt we've ever had.
We will definitely be back!
