"Great food and service. Love the history of the building and the ambience. Would highly recommend this restaurant. My wife said she would love to go there again on our next visit to Portsmouth only 40 miles away. The Library is much better than that highly rated Restaurant Massimo which we went the night before which we will never go back to Massimo again. When we talked to the local's in Portsmouth most everyone would agree with me and picked the Library as an excellent dining experience."

"When we arrived the restaurant was pretty full, I ordered a drink and it took 15 minutes to deliver it to my table, although because of the wait, the waiter gave me a very generous drink, which was nice. From then on things went a lot smoother. Second and third drinks were delivered promptly. We ordered our food and it came out in a reasonable time. Everyone seemed to enjoy the experience and we would recommend this restaurant, but only for special occasions, as the bill was 516 dollars for 7 people. A bit out of my price range for what we got, but a nice experience all around."

"This was our first dining experience at the Library Restaurant ... So our expectations were that we were going to a very special place with a great history , and for the most part , the restaurant itself was very nice with the all the wood ceilings and lighting and such , the bookcases filled with books dividing the room was good.. The problem was the food . The apps were ok .. . I has a bone in rib eye and it was good for the most part,it was cooked properly , but it wasn't an exceptionally good steak .. Not 33$ good .. The side dishes of Roasted garlic mashed potatoes and summer squash both fell flat on there face because they were devoid of seasoning , this dining experience was just AVERAGE! That's all I can say.. We didn't get wowed !"

"We went for Restaurant Week. The Restaurant Week menu had great choices but we decided to order off the Restaurant Week menu. Our meal was excellent. The portions were great. I did take part of my meal home with me. My husband ate all of his. We ordered the Land and Sea dinner which was jumbo sea scallops and tenderloin tips, garlic mashed potatoes and vegetable of the day. My husband also ordered a salad and I had soup. It was reasonably priced. I would recommend this restaurant."

"We had dinner during restaurant week this past Sunday at the Library. Unfortunately our experience was underwhelming but based on online reviews and word of mouth our meal was most likely an aberration. To begin, the restaurant is gorgeous, it feels like you're eating in Bruce Wayne's mansion. Our waitress was very nice, helpful, and pleasant in answering any questions. "I think that this is the best restaurant in Portsmouth NH and I have eaten in most of them more than once. Great steaks and great side dishes, beautiful (historic) space, excellent service, what more do you want?
Oh, you want cheap? Not here. You get what you pay for and here prices are as good or better than other high end restaurants where you can get a seat - but they are NOT cheap. I think the Library beats Ruths Chris, Mortons, all those BIG MEAT chains on QUALITY 1st and on PRICE 2nd. On AMBIANCE the Library - in a beqatuful histoic room - is in an entirely different (higher) class than the competitors (? - those competitors do not exist locally so does this matter?)"

"The wine list was out of my reach, though there were some excellent choices. This certainly turned out to be the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary. It was a comfortable environment and the service most congenial and prompt, but we were not rushed in any way. I am a desert fan, so the meal was ended on a very high note. "The Library is always a favorite. It was restaurant week, a nice crowd. There was also a retirement party w/a women who laughed like a screaming hyena. The staff was very apologetic, not the restaurant's fault.
The Library has always been delicious. I don't know why I went out during restaurant week, and then ordered off the special menu. The potatoes were over the golden brown and delicious level, and the few veggies were limp and over cooked.
I will be back, but not for restaurant week ever again."

The waiter was hopping but they did not seem staffed appropriately. He was busy the whole time but it took at least 10 minutes to clear each course.

"Good steaks and great potatoes au gratin. We went for dinner on a Saturday night expecting a quiet dinner for two, and that was not what we were in for. The room was loud, and the first dinning room that I ever thought had the lights too bright. Service was fine.
Steaks were good, but my medium rare was the same as my wife's medium. I wouldn't mention it, but this is a steak house. Good wine list, but lacking options by the glass.
If you are looking for a place for a group this might be a great spot, if you are looking for a quiet dinner this is not your place."

"What stands out about The Library Restaurant is the decor and ambiance. You get to eat surrounded by books in a beautifully decorated, classic library setting. The brie appetizer was amazing! Three of us ordered the frittatas and they were a little on the bland side. Service was a bit slow, but not too bad as we were enjoying a leisurely Sunday brunch. I would definitely go again, I would just order a different entree."

We were seated promptly, and our table for 2, although small, was cozy and close to the fire.
Bookcases lining the aisles, create a unique buffer from noisy tables and allow for a romantic dinner.
We ordered salads to start, and the house salad was crisp and fresh.
Chopped salad was a disappointment,however, too many chopped olives, and salty flavor.
My husband's steak was cooked to perfection and was better than steaks at some of the better known steak restaurants, and the cauliflower side was delicious.

My husband's steak was cooked to perfection and was better than steaks at some of the better known steak restaurants, and the cauliflower side was delicious.
Onion rings could have been crisper, but were also very good.

"Usually one of our favorite places for dinner, this time both meals came well done and our waiter never checked back in with us. Restaurant was busy with corporate tables and we were the unlucky forgotten table. I guess my feedback now for this restaurant would be if you walk in and see that it is busy with large tables then you should turn back around or maybe eat at the bar."

"Went here for brunch - alert- they don't open til 11:30 and won't open the door 1 minute before then - seems late for brunch to me. Good brunch menu with reasonable prices and good (but not great) service. Only 3 tables occupied in the restaurant and there was not wait staff on the floor for 10 minutes at a time.
Lovely room and good food just know what to expect."
