Torrisi Italian Specialties is a boutique tasting room located on Mulberry Street in Manhattan that specializes in Italian-American cuisine. Opening in 2010, Torrisi has matured into one of the city's most acclaimed restaurants. In 2012, Torrisi received a Michelin Star and was also named the #1 Italian Restaurant in the City by NY Magazine.
Using exclusively domestic products, Torrisi has cultivated a dining experience that pays homage to the history and culture of New York City while remaining distinctly Italian-American in philosophy and technique. Torrisi offers two tasting menus: a Seven Course Tasting Menu: available for lunch and dinner and a Twenty Course Chef’s Tasting Menu available nightly. This dynamic restaurant continues to grow and change. It continues to push the boundaries of what Italian-American cuisine means, and to redefine the traditional paradigms of fine dining.
"Lunch was an amazing variety of tastes starting with homemade mozzarella that melted in your mouth. Everything else that followed was outstanding. The gnocchi were to die for. Wine recommendations by waiter were spot on, service was excellent but not overbearing. Our reservation was the last for lunch that day so it was not too crowed which was nice. Will be back whenever in NYC. Thanks to Colamecco for recommending some time ago!"

"This was our second time here. Our previous meal was excellent, this one was disappointing. The food was not as good, from the chewy mozzarella right through to dessert, and the wait staff seemed bored."

"Because of the tasting menu, I though it was a restaurant where he had the dress-up nicely. We end up eating a the bar where some chef are puting their final touch to the plates. It was a choc at first but we had good time.
Thank you."

"This was the last meal we ate while in NYC before heading home. For my wife and I, the most enjoyable aspect of any trip is the food, and we're always looking for unforgettable experiences, the kind that you'll never forget, and Torrisi is definitely a restaurant we will not forget. Everything was so original in its execution, but the tastes were somehow very familiar to the palate. And the dessert we had, the lemon cake is by far the best dessert i've ever had, and the my last favorite dessert lasted me almost a decade."

"The food was great, as was the service. At one point we wanted skim milk for a cappuccino and they were willing to go next door to get some. The store ended up being closed but it's the thought that counts! The servers were helpful without being in your face. It seems like a great date spot though I was there with a friend. We actually sat at the counter and though I'm not a huge fan of doing so, it was great to see the servers prepare each item so carefully. Again, awesome experience and now that you can get a reservation, totally worth it."

"Brought a gift certificate that covered about half of the tab, which was perfect since only about half of the meal was memorable. After hearing so much about the restaurant and having to practically set a timer to nab a Saturday night reservation, my expectations were high. The made-to-order mozzarella was good, not great. Other appetizers and dessert were really just ok Pasta courses of pesto gnocchi & calamari with pasta rings that made it hard to tell the difference between the fish and pasta were both very good. The best course of the meal was mind blowing but had a 30 pp supplement charge. Wagyu beef with this absolutely amazing creamy polenta. Could have eaten a bowl of that alone and would have been a very happy diner."

"Intimate, charming tiny venue with a prix fix menu so choices are very limited. The best thing on the menu was the bocci which was our of this world. Reservations are hard to come by so we had to eat too early but c'est la vie."

"They only do a tasting menu and at $75/person it is totally worth it. each person gets 4 small appetizers then you pick a pasta, a main course and a dessert. there were two options for each (and also a couple of additions not on the menu that sounded absolutely delicious but would've added onto the $75 price tag). The fresh homemade warm mozzarella cheese app was heavenly. i wish i could've ordered ten of them. each beginner course was fresh, not too complicated, well made with a perfect balance of flavors. special care can be seen in their dishes. i ate as slow as possible in order to savor each bite. all other courses were just as good. a special spot and worth a visit."

"Typically, I'm not the type of person who goes out for $200 meals (minimum, per couple). I much prefer to discover those little gems throughout NYC that look like holes in the wall, but have the best tasting whatever you've ever had, and paying under $20 bucks for it. However, at Torrisi, I felt like I got the same value as one of those little gems. The food was definitely worth the price. Several of the dishes, especially the sheep's milk gnocchi, were unforgettable.
The wait staff was impressively well orchestrated in the way they shared tables while consistently bringing correct orders. They were friendly and informative, without being intrusive.
We got the regular menu, but I'm already thinking of going back for the tasting menu."

"I was realy expected their food due to many good reviews. In addition, it had been difficult for me to book the table and they required me to put the credit card number when booking etc. Those elements had me think this place would be somethig specials... but food was not that great. We of course ordered the tasting menu and tried to find our favorite dishes but everything is just average. I cannot recommend the place to my friends who love food."

"I was so disappointed in our dining experience at Torrisis. I had organised 3 dining experiences in New York and this was the restaurant I was most looking forward to. We had travelled from Australia and I had rung as well as booked online to ensure that we got a booking. When we arrived we were seated on bar stools on a make shift bench facing out to the street. It was difficult to talk as the 3 of us were seated in a row. Each time the door opened we receive a huge blast of cold air over myself and my two friends which was regularly throughout the evening. We were squeezed in a corner with the waiter having difficulty putting plates down. The food was lovely but very very disappointing overall. Not value for money"

"I went with a friend as a birthday treat. Lovely evening. You put yourself in their hands for the meal, but those hands know what they're doing. We had the $75 tasting menu. Not cheap, but good value for the quality of ingredients and the excellence of the preparation. I would say it's a romantic spot, and although I wasn't there with that sort of friend it was still very comfortable for us."

"Had the 20 course tasting menu. What a sensation! Probably 10 courses were simply outstanding. 5 very good. And 5 just ok (partly because of my personal taste preferences). To me that's a great batting average. Some of the courses were just gems, miraculous. Overall this was significantly better than the more highly touted Momofuko Ko tasting menu.
It is a very large menu though. I would like to see a slightly smaller version at maybe 15 courses. I think you could tighten it up by cutting a few of the less spectacular courses. But in any case, a thrilling experience."

"Awesome restaurant and great food. It is my favorite Italian place in New York. My only gripe is reservations are tough to get but that has to be expected given how good this place is and how few seats they have. As a side note the mozzarella is unmatched and it is very good that it is always on the menu."

"This is a real "emperor's new clothes" restaurant. It no way deserves the hype it has received. Except for the pasta course, the food was unexceptional. What was most outrageous was the $35 supplement charge--on top of the $75 for the meal--to have guinea hen instead of the two offered entrees. The guinea hen portion was small and also not of great distinction. The courses were served rapidly and the check was presented before it was asked for.It amazing what good PR can do. For $110, it is possible to have a good meal at Bouley. Unless you like getting ripped off, I suggest you keep away from this restaurant."

"Superb food. Rushed meal. I know it's a small restaurant and they must turn their tables-- given the cost of the meal, I should not have felt as hurried along as I did. Would, howver, go back in a heartbeat for more of that incredible food."

"The food was interesting, but I think a bit over priced. However, what really upset us is that we were seated in the "window bar" on stools even though we had made our reservation a month ahead of time. When we arrived we were told these were the only seats available and that we should have requested not to be seated there. This was our first time in the restaurant, and likely our last, so how were we suppose to have known to have made such a request! I thought that this was handled all very badly."

"With delicious food in a charming, intimate setting, an evening at Torrisi Italian Specialties can indeed be special itself. Drawbacks are that you may be surprised to arrive and find you are seated at the bar and not at a table, and checks are delivered to your table unrequested shortly after your dolce is served. Given the pace of the evening is set by the tasting menus, this unwelcome nudge mars what is otherwise attentive and friendly service"

"Given all that has been said about Torrisi, I had high expectations - and they met them. The flavors were spectacular, while the presentation of the dishes was unpretentious (as is the whole place). The pastas were like the best I have had in Italy."

"When this was a 4 course / $45 menu, I can see why everyone was rushing to get in. Now at 4 course / $75, it's ok, but it's not as much of a sprint. The food was good, but a noticeable notch below the best places in NYC -- there was minimal "wow" factor to any of the courses except for maybe the "Boars Head sandwich" as part of the antipasti -- that was quite good and creative."

"This place is totally original and overall just great. The service is outstanding and quick, the room is romantic and well decorated. The food is truly awesome and has tons of flavors. I understand the menu idea but I think there should be at least 3 choices of entree. There were only two the week I went (duck & monk fish). But regardless it was delicious. Some plate sizes are pretty small but with 7 courses I think that is the norm. Overall, go there, bring your significant other and expect to pay around 250 with wine (before tax). Well worth it though!!"

"Four of us were seated at a corner table that should have been for three (one on each side and two sharing the side with the bench) - we were shoehorned in. After being seated no one came to our table for twenty minutes. The waiter finally arrived and explained the menu. We asked about a main dish vegetarian option and were told there is not one. Waiter asked if we had made prior arrangements. We had not because, frankly, we have never had the experience of a restaurant not having a vegetarian option. Of the seven course meal, only 4 of the courses had a meatless option. All main dishes were meat so our guest was not served...The meal was not discounted nor was she offered substitutions. Really just a big disappointment all around."

"Great for a special occasion - food was excellent and perfect atmosphere.
Downside was very expensive wine list. The only wine that was reasonably priced was out of stock
And the worst thing about the night that left a bad taste in my mouth - the cheque was on our table the second we'd taken the last bite of our dessert. No offer of another drink, no apologies or offer to take our time.
When you're spending a lot for a special occasion, this is a really disappointing end to the night. We were on our honeymoon and this was our special dinner. I believe our seating was 8 - 9.30 but we weren't advised of this at any point"

"This place has been so relentlessly hyped that we were expecting a spectacular meal. Unfortunately, only the very excellent mozzarella at the start of the meal lived up to our expectations. The rice balls were a travesty of the classic arancini--bland and crumbly. The painterly carpaccio was too high on concept and too low on flavor. The pastas were okay, though the chestnut sauce was too rich for the gnocchi. But the biggest disappointment was the veal aldo, which had no detectable taste. Even very high quality veal is mild and needs seasoning or saucing to be really tasty. Surely if I know this, they know this, so why such unforgivable blandness? And the pastries for dessert were merely acceptable. All in all,a big disappointment."

"The 7 course pre-fixe menu is a deal if you don't get suckered into the upsell. The appetizers and dessert were by far the best part of the meal. The mozzarella in olive oil and rice ball were divine -- simple with outstanding flavors. Can't say the same for the surf and turf carpaccio -- beautiful presentation but overcomplicated flavors. I found the rest of the meal to be over-salted and butter laden. Aside from the gnocchi, the pastas (including the lobster) were forgettable. The halibut was so rich and heavy I could only stomach one piece. Let's just say the palate cleanser after the main was much appreciated! Really had high hopes given the rave reviews but definitely left unimpressed."

"Despite all the pre-meal hype, we were still wowed. Easily a top 5 dinner in NY, and we live here. Every course was inventive, thoughtful and delicious. The service was fine dining level, if a little detached. Love the tiny space that looks like your Italian grandmothers dining room, but more elegant."

"Squid ink farfalle pasta was killer. All the courses were very tasty and interesting. Definitely a fun dining experience - takes a few hours. Wine list is diverse and interesting with a number of less popular grapes (at least here in the states). No crazy bottles but consistently interesting and tasty ones. Worth a trip!"
