Plum
Plum is a neighborhood restaurant, located in Oakland’s Uptown district. The food, our interpretation of California cuisine, uses the best wild and cultivated ingredients we can find in our area. The beverage list features delicious and interesting wines, beers, cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. The restaurant is dramatic and inviting, with reclaimed wood tables and chairs, original artwork and a large chandelier with hand-blown glass shades. If you prefer being seated at our Chef's counter over a traditional table, please let us know when making a reservation.
Plum Bar, a neighborhood bar and restaurant, is also right next door. We serve inventive and classic cocktails, and fun, tasty bar food. We’re open for lunch Monday to Friday, beginning at 11AM. Happy hour is 4:00 to 6:00 pm M-F. We open at 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

"Plum is stylish, and interesting. The descriptions of the food were tantalizing. Some of the dishes were delicious- the yogurt, pluots and cacao nibs salad was delightful and memorable. The onion soup was so salty there was no other flavor. The pork loin was delicious, the gnocci were bland and sweet and strange. We had a fabulous cocktail, nice desserts, the waiter was attentive.
The canned music was so friggin' loud we had to scream at each other and we were exhausted by the end of the meal.
For this reason we will probably not go back."

"We started with a soup that was absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, it was all down hill from there. They are heavy handed with the vinegar and lean toward lots of acid in their flavors. Some of it was just too acidic to eat. A more balanced approach would be far more tasty. The service was exceptional though."

"Overall dining at Plum was a very good experience. The space is very stylish without being over the top. The service was very good. We sat at the bar surrounding the kitchen and really enjoyed watching the work being done while we ate. The food was really wonderful. The flavors were complex and unique and sophisticated, but at the same time the food was very simple. Pork Loin, Cod, etc. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys food and welcomes a little surprise with each dish."

"Plum was a lot of fun. We sat at the kitchen-bar and watched the food being prepared. The staff was very engaging and took great care of us. Manfred, the executive chef, was particularly enjoyable, to talk to, to watch him prepare our food, and then eating what he prepared. It was my most enjoyable meal out in a long time. I will definitely go back. The menu is constantly changing, except for the burger, so with each trip I have something very different, and often things that I have never had before. It is a welcome addition to Oakland's Uptown neighborhood. It is also convenient for dining before attending events at The Sound Room, the Paramount Theater or the Fox Theater."

"When the two of us arrived for our reservation we were told we'd be sitting at the bar/chef's table. The host explained that any seating is considered in a reservation - which I think is kind of odd. Anyway, the host was able to switch us to a table for two. Going forward I'll have to remember specify "no bar". The menu is limited but the food is great!"

"Our party of four was seated at the chef's counter. We knew this was the arrangement ahead of time. I don't recommend it--hard to talk, of course, and we found service in this setting to be poor, perhaps because of communications issues, but generally we didn't get much attention.
Mains: An artichoke and kale main course was great. Cod was not well liked and gnochhi were served at best lukewarm. Starters: chickpea salad was good but you have to like crunchy chickpeas. Ricotta/olive bread was good but on the soggy side and a bit pricey at $10. Wine list is short but quality was pretty high. The place is known for the mixed drinks from the happening bar next door.
Atmosphere was good. We are, however, unlikely to repeat."

"Plum has some good things going for it. Interesting location and good decor are some of them. The food is good, but not spectacular. Same with the service. And the music is about 2 to 3 times loader than it needs to be. I know in this age of texting and smartphones, that people are less likely to talk directly to each other, it would still be a great option to be more centered on talking. The tables are very close to each other as well, which means that combined with the loud music makes this a difficult place to have an intimate conversation. I was hoping for a place (this is my neighborhood) that could be a frequent place to eat and get to know the staff."

"Food is always so well put together here - fresh ingredients, not too much fat or oil, thoughtful pairings. They make great cocktails. The chef's table is great if you want to watch your dish get put together and learn a few tips from the pros. All around great experience."

"The food selection was minimal and made worse by the waitress' descriptions. Most in our group thought the actual food selected was ok. I thought the dressing for the salad and soup was too salty. Not a very welcoming atmosphere. I have no plans of returning."

"Maybe we hit it on an off night but the experience was disappointing. The food was bland, with odd combinations ...artichoke, kale, and bean stew, ricotta on bread with some cherries, pork loin on mashed vegetables, cod on vegetables in broth. Though fresh, very mild flavors. Service was poor, and it took an hour to receive the food even though it was not bustling. Staff seemed to be uninterested in being there."

"I have been to plum a handful of times. Once was during restaurant week so the 3 course menu was great. This most recent time was a big disappointment. We had two of the specialty cocktails. One of them was immediately sent back. Plum Bar replaced the drink at no charge and it is nice that you can arrive early, have a drink at the bar, and then your drinks are delivered to your table once your reservation starts. The appetizers we ordered were excellent. Green Garlic Chowder was very good and the housemade ricotta with basil and cherries was interesting. Our mains were the weak link. My date's gnochhi were flavorless and easily overpowered by a carrot puree. My pork loin would have been pretty good but the grits were way to salty."

"My hen was fine, however its accompanying quinoa and vegies were very good. My companion had the fish, which was over-cooked. We struck up a conversation with the two people dining next to us who, by chance, had ordered the two same dishes. Her fish was also over-cooked. My companion raved about her mojito-like drink. We had to ask for bread three times, but in other ways the waiter was very attentive. The chocolate tarte for dessert was out of this world. So there you have it. A mixed experience -- some of it absolutely terrific, others not so much."

"At the last minute we changed our reservation from 4 people to 6 and they were very accomodating. Between the six of us, we had the squid appetizer, asparagus appetizer, green garlic/potato soup, pork entree and cod entree. We all sampled everything and the only thing I would change is for the cod to be less salty (& I'm a salt lover). Delicious!"

"Our first time at Plum we were seated at the counter facing the open kitchen, where we got to watch Chef Wrembel, his obviously experienced crew of 3, and one trainee, execute during a busy dinner hour like a well oiled machine. The menu choices, though limited, were unique, flavorful, and well presented. Chef Wrembel and his staff were solicitous throughout, making sure the food was to our liking. Would return for a special occasion."

"Cute spot that seemed to have potential...but...the aervice was terribly slow. that would be fine if the food was good. a few decent appetizers but nothing i would order again. pork entre was inedible, tough and not good at all. Also interesting that it was left entirely untouched on my playe and nobody asked how it was or if there was a problem. dessert was good. overall very disappointing, especially given the price. I would not return or recommend it with so many other good restaurants in the area."

"Excellent food prepared innovatively. Service excellent and wine list has wide selection boutique wines. The waiter was able to offer good guidance through the list. There is alsio a counter for dining that overlooks the open kitchen. Plum Bar next door is large with an innovative bar menu of delicious food. The vibe in both places is kind of hipster and the dining room music was a bit percussive, not relaxing."

"Very good service in a cool space. Drinks were excellent and creative, while food was a mixed bag. Some dishes seemed to be a bit style over substance—the profusion of squid ink served with the squid was really over the top, the colorfully described but somewhat bland gnocchi underwhelmed. The vegetarian entree was well-executed, however, and the burger, too. We may come back, or we may keep exploring the many wonderful restaurants that Oakland has to offer. We were happy to find Plum to be worth visiting at least once."

"We were a bit disappointed with our dinner last Saturday night, expecting more attention to the food preparation. All of our salads were overdressed. My squid appetizer was too, and the bright note expected from the sunchokes was drowned. The flavors in the artichoke main course were similarly muddied. My game hen main course was good (although deboning the hen makes presentation a challenge), and another in our party had a superb burger. Plum Bar next door is excellent, though - Wish that was my local."

"Trolled OpenTable, found a spot at Plum. I had heard about it, but never made the time. Glad we did! Sat at the "Chef's Table", best seat in the house, especially if you are into the process. Talked to the cooks and got a really intricate perspective on the food and philosophy. Plum avoids tons of butter and cream which allows you to eat a 3 course meal and still feel good. Had a cold squid dish, and a farro with poached egg dish for starters. Had a cod dish and guinea hen for mains. Shared a half bottle of Peay Pinot and finished with a delicious chocolate tart and coffee. Every bite had tons of thought that went into the balance of texture, temperature, acid, and salt. Great meal. Haven't had food like that since last summer in Paris!"

"We found wait persons very thoughtful and helpful about food allergies. We felt well cared for from the very start and even more as dinner progressed. Everything we ate was delicious. "What a wonderful experience wehad. I had been to Coi and was a little disappointed as it was so much more formal than i was expecting. I hadn't visited Plum when it first opened because of that experience but too many people told me how great it was...how right they all were. We sat at the chef's bar/table- and wouldn't have had it any other way. We felt likes royalty without the formaility. The food was terirfic, the asparagus- amazing! I would go back in a heart beat- actually can't wait to go back."

"I had the Butter beans and kale soup/goulash which had crunchy pieces of bread on top and was delicious. The appetizer mixed green salad had a unique tangy dressing and the apasragus was a great mix of flavor and crunch. However, the portions were all quite small. I am not a large eater, nor a large person, but I would have expected a bit more for the main course. The server was friendly , the food was excellent and the decor arty but low key. Oh, one more thing, maybe some pillows for the wooden benches?. The back of the seats was a bit too far away to lean against, I am 5'8" , so one had to slump to reach them (not such great ergnomics) and they were a bit hard against my boney spine. Thanks."

"Plum is a fine restaurant in up and coming Uptown Oakland. We enjoyed being there and the food was good. Some dishes were a little over-salted, but still tasty. The first glass of wine recommended by the server was very ordinary, but he made up for it with another from a bottle not on the by-the-glass menu. It also took 3 requests to get our bread and olive oil (delicious), and the party that sat next to us well after we arrived got theirs before we finally did. Only other complaint is the very hard wooden benches and chairs. Chairs are also heavy and hard to move. But a friendly, lively atmosphere made the dinner fun and worthwhile."

However, we had booked this for restaurant week hoping for a "steal" - turns out you can't eat at Plum - you have to go next door and get a burger. this is misleading and the host at the door wasn't very friendly or accommodating about it. attitude is everything and that night it wasn't very nice."

"The Plum burger is super delicious, as was the housemade ricotta appetizer. But the real star of the evening was the chocolate tart with caramel and sea salt. One of those desserts you'll dream about for weeks to come! I find Plum's food a little fussy, but it is consistently good and didn't find the prices unreasonable."

"We dine out 3-4 times/month usually in SF. It was only because we were attending a show in Oakland that I chose a restaurant there. Plum was a wonderful surprise! The wine list is impressive; cocktails are imaginative and great tasting; appetizers and entrees were innovative and every bite revealed the complexity, interaction and melding of carefully selected ingredients. To round out our enjoyable experience, our server was attentive to getting us out the door to meet our show time schedule."

"This place is phenomenal. I sat at the chef's counter with my brother. We had incredible food, wine and service. "We were looking for a place to catch an early dinner before heading to the airport hotel when we stumbled upon Plum online. The neighborhood around this restaurant has undergone a makeover which intrigued us to see urban renewal at work. Also, the menu on the website and restaurant photos looked interesting. The restaurant was quiet when we arrived so we had a choice of seats and chose to sit at a bar like area where we could see our food being prepared and talk with the kitchen staff. While our burger and lamb were excellent, we also enjoyed the friendly staff who explained a lot of what they were doing. My guess is that this would not be possible in the middle of a rush but we found it fun anyway."
