Acclaimed restaurateur Stephen Starr, of Buddakan and Morimoto, brings casual elegance to the New-York Historical Society with Caffè Storico (Italian for “historic”).
The restaurant features dishes inspired by classic cicchetti, or small plates, as well as handmade artisanal pastas. Award-winning chef, Jim Burke, brings an approachable, refined style to the menu with a deep sense of authentic Italian cuisine developed during his time in Italy. An all-Italian wine list with over fifty labels, twenty of which are available by the glass, accompanies a full bar.
The 74-seat dining destination is located in the newly renovated iconic Central Park West institution.
"After a tour of the museum, we enjoyed a light and delicious lunch at Caffe Storico in a charming, light and airy room with just the right amount of sound ambience. The honey lemon dressing on the baby lettuce salad was just delicious - fresh, with interesting herbal notes and a touch of mint, I think! Best salad I have had in a long time!
The smoked salmon and mascarpone sandwich was also good. Would have appreciated knowing ahead of time that it included a small amount of red onion (which I removed) and capers, (which I like) , and a small salad on the plate. Wine selection excellent.
My partners pasta with sausage ragu was just the right size and delicious. Overall a wonderful dining experience. Would definitely return."

"Have eaten here at least 15 times and it's slipping. The newer pasta dishes aren't good and the latest shoe to drop is eliminating the lobster cavatelli. What are they thinking!? Happy to see they have a few real "entrees" now though..."

"Met a good friend who I hadn't seen for a long time for lunch at Caffe Storico. It was our first visit there, but it won't be our last! The food was interesting and delicious from beginning to end. The wine was equally good. Service was friendly and well-informed. The room itself is large and airy, and there is a lovely bar if you just want to meet for drinks. Of course it is on the first floor of the NY Historical Society, which makes it so convenient to see their wonderful exhibits, and it is across the street from Central Park. It is fairly expensive, but all in all, I would give this restaurant a top rating."

"I have been to Caffe Storico three times in the last three weeks. Although it is always busy, it's usually possible to get a reservation online. The food is good, small plates, nice light ambience though it gets quite noisy at weekends especially if you are in the middle of the room. But its standout feature is its customer service. The ratio of staff to customers is high and the staff make time - French friends were offered the opportunity to sample their choice of wine twice. Staff manage somehow to be super efficient but don't feel as if they are rushing you. The Cafe sees to select nice people for whom service seems a pleasure. It's also a terrific museum."

"Beautiful space, good food and service - spoiled by catastrophic noise level from fellow diners and the open kitchen. Did not encourage lingering over a meal."

"This museum eatery is a vibrant and eye-popping place. And ear-popping as well. While the setting with its walls of china is a visual treat, all that china just might possibly be contributing to the acoustic roar that surrounded us at lunch. There doesn't seem to be anything to absorb the sound. The food however, was tasty and attractively presented."

"Food is very mediocre. Service is the same. When is the last time that a server did not know what Scotches were single malt and which ones were not? Drinks took a long time to get to us given that it was difficult to place a Scotch order. Food was very average or less than."

"We absolutely loved our dinner at Cafe Storico. It was our first time dining at the restaurant and went after receiving great recommendations from friends. The octopus sausage, King crab on cracker/toast, chicken liver on toast and duck breast entree were all AMAZING. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and wine list and a joy to speak with. He recommended a red wine called fresia that was over the top outstanding. Can't wait to go back!"

"A perfect "ladies who lunch" spot convenient to public transit, Central Park and, of course, the Historical Society. Like the Society itself, however, the offerings are limited and bear no connection to NY or history. The Sicilian tuna salad - a real salad with tuna and capers sprinkled in - is delicious and ample, as was the Caesar salad. Would love a few more options, perhaps something to show off our native NY grown fare? The atmosphere is pleasant and polite if not a bit fussy - caffe latte was served in a tall glass with an awkwardly placed handle perhaps better suited for ice cream with a long spoon. It was a lovely experience but it could shine with a bit of tweaking."

"Lunch at this museum was lovely, although not inexpensive, with a very nice, small menu. Although you might not want to visit the Historical Society itself, you can still eat here. Very crowded at lunchtime so reservations are needed. There is no other place like this on Central Park West, so it is a great addition to the neighborhood."

"Storico is another excellent example of museums increasingly having much better restaurants within their walls. The food is imaginative and tasty and the service is first class. The ambiance is quietly elegant, rather minimalistically white, with some decorations from the museum collection."

"We enjoyed our dinner at Cafe Storico, but the experience was marred by the fact that the kitchen ran out of several dishes that were on the menu and that we had selected before the server informed us about the issue. I have never had this kind of experience in a comparable New York City restaurant after thirty-odd years of living and dining here-- not just one dish (this happens)-- but three or four, appetizers, main courses, desserts. And this was on a Saturday night at 7:30-- one would think a prime time for such a restaurant to be stocked. Clearly, something is amiss here."

"Always enjoyable. Love the selection of the wine by the glass. Menu is heavy on pasta and some of the portions are very small, and some very big. We've had both. A good combination with a visit to the NY Historical Society, or the Museum of Natural History."

"We had wonderful food and excellent service on a Wednesday night. I wish there were more of a crowd in the evenings at this good restaurant. Being a little off the beaten track and without signage are most likely the reasons for the empty tables. But maybe something to make the room feel more intimate might help. Tablecloths? I don't know, but I will continue to patronize Storico and recommend it."

"I love the 'airiness' of Caffe Storico. And the windows with Central Park tree top views and light - it's lovely. We had a great table - corner - away from the hustle bustle - it is a noisy space, but not horrifying. Menu was fun, I thought - wish they'd have some 'lighter fare' for lunch - or that my friends would have been interested in sharing. I will definitely go back!"

"Food is very good. We've been 5 times and the food has been consistently good. The service is a problem. They rushed us to order and cleared drinks when they weren't empty. We had several servers and they all seemed like amateurs. I hope they can get the service worked out because I really like the restaurant."

"A friend and I enjoyed a weekday lunch at this very pretty new cafe at the New York Historical Society. The lunch menu was a little limited for my tastes, but others may find more options of interest. Service was good. I had a pasta dish, while my friend ordered the risotto. Both dishes could have used a little less salt, but we enjoyed them, nevertheless. I was glad to see that portions were not too large, making it unnecessary to regret not being able to ask for a doggie bag as were still had exhibits to visit. We weren't able to take time for cappuccino and dessert, but we will do that another time."

"I took guests Saturday and we had all already had eggs for bfast and two of us don't eat carbs, so we found the menu extremely limited. However, I had the ceaser salad which was excellent. We tried the burata with artichokes and thought it was way too small and the buratta had no taste. My friend enjoyed the panini."

"It's in the New York Historical Society building. We were there for an early dinner, and didn't expect the quality of food they have there. Our waitress was knowledgeable and delightful. Everything was properly prepared and fresh. I wouldn't call it a destination restaurant, but if you're in the area, it's certainly worth a try."
