"From seeing all the great press and customer reviews this may come as a surprise. Alvin and Friends, especially the new location, has all the trappings of a great restaurant. It's got the look, the feel, but when it comes to the food, it's sadly just average. If the same attention to detail that is given to all the other aspects of Alvin and Friends, were paid to what is served on the plate, then this place would live up to the hype. As a New Rochelle resident, I really want to like this place so it's a little disappointing that it doesn't deliver."

"Although there was a special Mother's Day menu, I was glad the fried chicken was on it...gotta love it, so moist and crunchy, served with collard greens with smokey shreds of turkey and a light mac & cheese. My husband had the oxtail which was so flavorful with kick to the sauce served on bed of coconut rice, a flavorful change of pace from regular rice. The restaurant is so colorful due to Alvin's personally handpainted artwork of oils and acrylics. It gives the restaurant a really happy vibe. Nice that he has moved into a much bigger space as evidenced from the crowd throughout the whole restaurant enjoying their meals. Wine selections were nice and affordable. Waitstaff was very attentive and non-obtrusive."

"I've loved this place from my first visit ( in the previous location), and nothing has swayed me since then. This is already my second time at the new location, and it's only been open about a month. (I live more than a half-hour away-- well worth the trip)!
Great food, great fun... and no, the Southern fried chicken is NOT overrated, and is quite possibly the best I've ever had (I'm in my mid-50's, and have had lots of fried chicken!).
Alvin, my sole criticism is that I don't think you're taking my suggestion very seriously-- about looking into a second venue in Northern Westchester!! :-)"

"I took my mother for her birthday and she liked the food. The owner was very friendly adn accomodating. He came out to welcome everyone to the restaurant and spent time talking with everyone. I felt that this personalized service along with the food was what made the night great."

"This, my first visit to Alvin & Friends, was a birthday gift from a friend. My first impression will be a lasting one as I was immediately drawn into the spaciousness, beautiful decor and elegance of the restaurant. With large, gorgeous paintings adorning the walls, it was a little like dining in an art gallery. The curried crab chowder was the perfect appetizer. We ordered the caramelized salmon which was delectable. For dessert I had the plaintain bread pudding, a bit unusual but quite delicious. The best part of the evening though was our conversation with our most gracious host, and owner, Alvin Clayton. Being warm, personable and sensitive to our needs, he definitely is part of the charm of returning to this lovely restaurant."

"I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed. The decor and ambiance are great, and valet parking was appreciated. But the menu was much more limited than the menu I viewed online, so there were fewer choices that appealed to me. The "rave" in all reviews I read was about the fried chicken so that's what I went with. And honestly, it was good but not great. The accompaniments were all very salty. The best parts of the meal were the Alvin's rum punch, and the bittersweet chocolate cake for dessert. Our server was also gracious and friendly. I was so looking forward to checking out this hot spot, but can't say I'd rush to go back."

"It would be close to impossible NOT to be charmed by Alvin; the Alvin and Friends experience is equally impressive. From the service to the food--and back around to the decor--a night out at Alvin and Friends is one I look forward to repeating. The new place, though much bigger, still has that familiar feel--and now with a substantial bar, and bar area, you can go and sip Alvin's awesome rum punch and have a few bites OR sit for the full meal. I've been a patron of Alvin and Friends from the second evening they opened. I have never been disappointed. However, slight changes have been made in the kitchen and I must say... after dinner there Saturday evening, I have constantly been DREAMING of the roasted leg of lamb with creamy garlicky polenta (the smoothest I've EVER eaten), alongside the black eye pea garden salad!
Seriously, I would have licked the plate!!! I mentioned this to Alvin and he laughed, remarking what a lovely compliment it was. SERIOUSLY, I have been devouring the flavors and crispness on the palette ever since."

"Very disappointed by the food and the speed of the meal...in and out in 1 hour...food was brought while still having drinks. Main course was brought while still having appetizer. Food was mediocre at best...salad was small and bland, collard greens were too salty, fried chicken was not crisp and seemed like it had been sitting for some time and rewarmed...atmosphere was noisy...much too expensive for such an unspecial meal. Good thing they are moving to a new location, which might address the ambiance and noise."

"We still like the ambiance of Alvin & Friends and really like the fact that Alvin himself is a presence. He makes us feel welcome and the service is very good. I think the food has gone downhill since we started going (a year and a half ago?) and I'd love to see it improve when they move to their new location. I really should have returned my whole main course but I didn't want to delay the others. I had the salmon, which was overcooked, tasteless, came with truly terrible potatoes that I gave to my sons and a few bland asparagus. I actually left hungry. Maybe it was an off night but I was disappointed. I wish they would offer a few more fish dishes. The only other alternative was the fried catfish and fried food is not for me."

"This was our second visit to Alvin's and we still LOVED IT... I love walking into the rest. and feeling like I am part of Alvin's family. I t is such a treat to be welcomed by him and his nice staff. He is always dressed beautifully and is so attentive to his guests as if you are at a dinner party at his home. LOVE the DUCK......my husband goes back for the duck often.
Keep up the great work. Hope the restuarant does not lose its cozy homey feeling when it moves into its new location."

"Excellent meal as always. I strongly suggest the fried catfish. Desert was delicious, pineapple upside down cake. As always Alvin was present and visited every table to make sure that his guests were well taken care of. The live jazz music added to the atmosphere. We cant wait to visit Alvin and Friends in their new location."

"The food tasted very good... Although you eould think that I was watching what I ate with the portion size given...
The space and how the tables are arranged makes the place very tight so dealing with prople constantly coming over to the table besides us and sticking their behinds in me and my friends face made the overall night unpleasent...

The people dining besides us seem to be friends of the owner so they were having a lil too much ( incosiderate) fun...

"Had dinner there with a party of 12 and everything was perfect! The Slow Braised Oxtails and the Land and Sea entrees were amazing, as were the desserts! The staff there was very attentive to all our needs as was Alvin, as usual! It is a 1 hour and 15 minute drive for us but ALWAYS worth the trip!"

"We would have rated the overall experience and food a five if it wasn't for the upside down pineapple cake we had for dessert-it didn't seem fresh. Our entrees was outstanding--I had the catfish while my wife and daughter had the fried chicken with macaroni and cheese. It should be noted that since my daughter has celiac, the chef used gluten free flour for the chicken. Alvin is to be congratulated for his personal attention and conversation.It's about time outstanding southern food was available in Westchester. We loved the ambiance and the outstanding service."

"Terrific find when we were in New Rochelle. They will be moving to a nearby location soon and we hope to visit again some time. Alvin, the proprietor, was extremely gracious--came over to our table and chatted with us for about 5 minutes. Doesn't happen too often in restaurants these days."

"We dined there on Valentine's Day. The only food that was available was a severely limited Valentine's menu. The entre` was the only item where a choice was available. The prime rib was a tiny offering, the size of a deck of cards. We had 4 drinks. The cost of the entire "celebration" was over $260.00 including tax an tip....a very poor value. We have dined at this restaurant several time before and liked it. We were very surprised what a ripoff the Valentines Day dinner was here."
