"It was our first time at Jumpin Jays Fish Cafe, we would highly recommend. We are 2 adults interested in taking local day trips in New England and also finding a great restaurant. "We'll get on a plane for a promising restaurant. Stayed at the Wentworth, but decided to forego yet another of their good-but-underwhelming "fine dining experiences" and try instead for a highest-quality, food-centric surprise. We found it. Services, space, lighting, and noise level helped create a comfortable environment that might normally be called "casual". But, as a former chef, I am certain their dedication to their craft is most serious. I have seldom found such insightful design (shredded beets and broccolini with a hint of marjoram, yes!), and skillful execution (both cod and swordfish were perfectly fresh and delicately handled) at such a modest price. Ignore the pedestrian name and exterior - have one of the best meals around."

"Jumping Jays provides something that a lot of restaurants don't: consistency. Every meal I've had here over the past 5+ years was delicious. Best fish in town, yummy sides, good wine/drink list, friendly wait staff, and perfectly-paced service. You have your pick of the fish/sauce combo, but if you aren't sure ask and they'll recommend the best pairing (I say try the Tuna + Wasabi). Of course expect to pay Portsmouth prices, but if you like fish Jumping Jays won't disappoint."

"My boyfriend and I went to Jumpin Jay's for valentine's day and it was wonderful. For starters we had the gorgonzola and pear salad, which was probably the greatest part of the meal. We also shared the calamari which was very tasty (could have been warmer) and my boyfriend got the tuna avacado and although he didn't personally care for it, other reviewers raved about it. I guess maybe it was a preference thing.

For dinner I got the sauteed shrip in creole sauce and it was DELICIOUS!! The portion was rather large and shrimp in the dish were huge and fresh tasting. The meal was very heavy, but definitely reheated well. My boyfriend got the monkfish and although I didn't try it he seemed to enjoy it very much.

"Friendly, helpful and attentive staff. Raw fish appetizers (tuna & avacado and salmon) were fresh and well seasoned. Portsmouth cod entree was a perfectly cooked andpotato and broccolini accompaniments were just right! Wine by the glass choices were very sensible and fairly poured. Tables were not crowded and conversation was easy. We'd happily go back again!

"We decided to eat locally before the show at the Music Hall. We were delightfully surprised. We are locals,30+ years. mostly choosing to eat at home. Really not into the Portsmouth downtown scene. Choosing JJFC was the best decision I had made since deciding to marry my husband of 18+ years. The food was superb! The mussels were to die for and my husband loved the oysters from the raw bar. My scallops and his monkfish were done perfectly and the attentive server made us feel welcome even when the restaurant filled up. We will be back. Well done, Jay and staff."

"We first ordered three appetizers and a really refreshing beet salad. The PEI mussles were excellent, mostly because the sauce they were cooked in had a perfect savory flavor (I would imagine wine, garlic, and butter) with just the right amount of kick, ideal for dipping some of the bread that came with the table (the good kind that you might get in an Italian or Portuguese bakery). The fried oysters really took it to a new level - there was something in their batter that I'd never tasted before, and I just couldn't put my finger on it. The crab cake was good but didn't stand out compared to the rest of our food. The croaker with miso butter was perfercly prepared, as were the scallops. I'd definitely go here again for a nice occasion."

"a very good experience at Jay's: fresh well-prepared seafood (arctic char, scallops and mahi-mahi), good but overdressed salads and fresh veges. very nicely done. not quite at the level of Cava or the Black Trumpet in terms of flair, but if you're in Portsmouth and you just want a fresh piece of fish, this is a very good choice."

"I've eaten here three times and have loved it every time. This time was a little less enjoyable as our waitress was not at all pleasant. She was efficient and not rude, but certainly didn't enhance the evening as the wait staff had done on previous visits. I'd highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves seafood. There are few that can beat it! And it's a great entree to spending an evening at the Music Hall."

"Very glad we made the reservation via Open Table. Party who arrived just before us, and had no reservation, was told the wait would be an hour and a half! Food was delicious and waiter was nice although I don't recall him coming by to ask how everything was once we started eating. Surprised that they were out of the Nova Scotia Char by 7:15. I believe two of us were going to order that. I settled on the Mahi Mahi with the citrus and whole grain dijon - very tasty. Sticky toffee pudding was delicious! We would go there again and again make a reservation through Open Table. Also glad we were not seated on the side that has the bar - would have been a whole different experience and ambiance."

"The only disappointment was the 25 minute wait for our table. We enjoyed our drinks by the bar while we waited but thought the wait was a little much. Once we sat down, the service and food was excellent. We were staying in Portsmouth overnight and found this excellent restaurant via Open Table. Glad we tried it and we would definitely recommend it to others. I had their famous muscles for an entree and had oysters for an appetizer. My wife had grilled swordfish on a Caesar salad and was extremely happy."

"First time there. Wednesday Jan 13th Waitress was great. Kathleen !! Service prompt, friendly. Food was great. Salad was enough for a meal. Great sauces. Will definitely be there again. Thought the prices were a little bit high, but after I received my meal, it was not so. Well worth it.I thought it was a little noisy, but it was not unpleasant. A talkative crowd. "Jumpin' Jay's was terrific! They had our reserved table in a nice spot, the service was very friendly and the waiter well informed about the menu, and the food is wonderful. The menu has some tasty treats, although I usually like to try a fish I don't eat regularly because the way they prepare it is delicious. I tried the pear and radicchio salad and could have had nothing else for supper- the pear was soaked in port, baked, and served with goat cheese on a ball of radicchio with gorgonzola, pumpkin seeds and almonds with a drizzle of plum vinaigrette- WOW! The char was cooked perfectly, although the sauce was not as delicate as I had hoped. My friends ate provencal linguine with shrimp and mussels and halibut piccata and both raved. Thanks"

"This restaurant was a pleasant surprise. Great atmosphere. The service was great. We where seated right away and the hostess sent the waiter and barmaid to us immediately after. The food was fantastic. The chowder was hearty and meaty. I also had the steammed mussels in white garlic sauce as an appetizer. There must have been 50 of them and they were the most tender I have ever eaten. The stuffed sole was magnabulous. There was alot of food. I was totally stuffed when I left."

"The food is excellent here. Very fresh and creative! We love it here. The atmosphere is a little odd as you feel like you're dining in an old corner Woolworth's window, but the food is so good and the inside doesn't feel like that. Highly recommend this place to seafood lovers."

"Our seats were great, next to plants with Christmas lights. It felt cozy. We did wait quite a few minutes before our server came over, and when she did, she seemed a little rushed. The mussels were great; cooked perfectly! The Alaskan Char was ok. Salty and dry though, which was disappointing."

"They gave us very friendly service with huge portions of remarkable food. Their recommendations that we chose (the mussels and the toffee dessert) lived up to the hype. Even the vegetables were really delicious. We had a little bit of a wait to be seated and then to be fed, but hey, it was Saturday night, and it was a very popular restaurant. It was good leisurely dining, so we would be reluctant to bring children. We also were pleasantly surprised that the tables weren't too close to one another. We will return."

"After reading favorable reviews, we were looking forward to dining at Jumpin' Jays Fish Cafe. We found the food disappointing and the wine list lacking. We regretted our choice to dine there. None of us would return. The oysters had been shucked in advance and did not taste fresh. The mashed potatoes tasted as if they were "instant" and the fish, chowder and other selections were unremarkable."
