"Steaks and prime rib as good as any in the city! Done exactly as we asked. For our waiter, Tony, no request was a problem! He made my wife's birthday a memorable occasion. Can not wait to return! Certainly not inexpensive, but for a special evening, THE place to go!"

"The filet mignon was very good although not cooked to medium as it was very red in the center. The lobster was a rock lobster which is a very tough lobster, unlike a Maine lobster. Actually the lobster with butter sauce is better at a Red Lobster restaurant. The vegetables and soup were excellent."

"We had a table for 4 at the reataurant and with two of us there, we were seated timely. Our final two were about 20 minutes late, and I have to applaud the server who was patient, and left us unrushed, while being attentive. When all were there, we ordered several appetizers and entree dishes to share (3 different steaks and a 3 lb lobster). The meal was served so it was easy to share and everything was cooked perfectly and tasted fantastic; the service was impeccable. The bar to start and the ambience for dining were perfectly comfortable making it a place you want to go back to. There is no better steakhouse in NYC."

"Not worth the money or the time. Our waiter was hard of hearing, rude & when I asked for a French Martini, he had no idea what I was talking about. I could understand if he had gone to the bartender and asked since I was at the bar earlier and had a cosmopolitan. My husband ordered the 3 lb. lobster special and what was served could not have been even
1 1/2 lbs. at best. Wasn't worth the agrument. Already had to return my filet which was order med. rare and served well done. We were celebrating our son's 22nd birthday and this was a sure fire let down. Dinner costing $600 plus tip for a group of five was a total disappointment.

Corporate expense accounts and tourists could only be the reason that this restaurant exists. Never again."

"We visited on a late Saturday night. The place was relatively quiet by this time and the staff was highly attentive. The food arrived at comfortable intervals and was prepared just as we ordered. Everyone had steaks and all remarked that their dinners were very good. My T-bone was medium rare, just the way I like it. The 3 side dishes (spinach, mashed potatoes, mushrooms) were large enough, (and tasty enough) to satisfy our group of six. Portions are sized for big appetites so go there hungry, really hungry.

While the prices (food and wine) tend to be on the "expense account" side, the quality and service are notable and I would recommend at least one trip to enjoy the Steakhouse experience. For my money, Ben Benson's is a cut above S&W"

"Overall, dinner was very good. This is definitely a "guy's place" if your guy has VERY expensive tastes. The service was impeccable; the food delicious and the wine list extensive (fyi nothing below $50/btl). We ordered the oysters (very plump & flavorful), the crab-meat & lobster cocktails -- both very nice. Our only issue was with the actual steaks: we both ordered filet mignon (the smaller 12 oz is still a very large piece of meat)& were surprised by how fatty & marbleized it turned out to be. It was cooked well enough(medium/rare - altho more on the rare side) but surprisingly, the actual cuts themselves were pretty fatty. That aside, overall, a very nice (albeit expensive) experience."

"This is the best Steak House I have ever had the pleasure of eating at. The service was excellent. Waiters friendly & efficient. We had a corner table & did not feel cramped. Our waiters did not make us feel rushed & we had a very relaxing, leisurely dinner. My husband had the filet mignon cooked to perfection & I had the shrimp scampi. Large succulent shrimp & flavorful. We would definitely return on future visits to NYC."

"Our overall experience was a good one....but not much more. I may have had too high a level of expectation. After hearing Mr. Benson's radio ads during Giants broadcasts for years, having dinner here was on my to do list. We went after a show and I was really looking forward to dinner, to trying the restaurant. While it was good to very good, I don't see us returning. My wife and I dropped $200+ on dinner. We have done this a few times before and it has usually been a memorable experience, one that you think you'd like to do again, not this time. I honestly was not peticularly impressed with the meat for one - a couple of $50 filets. I know I was thinking while eating that I enjoy the beef tenderloin that we grill at home better."

"I have been a fan of Ben Bensons for years. I called prior to arrival for my table for four and asked about the dress code. We arrived wearing jeans as they said it was casual. They immediately sat us in the bar area. I was dissapointed. The service and atmosphere was not up to par as I received over the last 15 years as I received in the dinning room. I may give Ben Bensons another chance but I was disappointed."

"We visited to enjoy the restaurant week menu. The shrimp bisque and the salads (one Caesar, one mixed green)were very good. The English cut prime rib dish was enjoyed by two of my group, the beef was so tender it barely needed the knife. The sliced filet mignon seemed to be a previously prepared plate that got reheated and was a disappointment. One dessert was fine(the ice cream), but the bread pudding with the wild turkey glaze was very paste-y and the bourbon sauce tasted like ink. I've had several memorable dinners here, but honestly the lunch was just okay."

"Ben's is still our favorite "midtown" treat. The waiters are friendly and knowledgable. The cooking and grades of beef are excellent. There is enough on the menu for anyone, even if they are not a fan of red meat, so that should not hold you back if one or two members of the party make a face about a steakhouse. Warm, comfortable, friendly, clean, and a unique ambiance all add up to an excellent NYC place to eat!"

"I went with my daughter for restaurant week. We both had salads for 1st course. They were crisp & tasty. She had a pork chop that was under cooked and had to be sent back. She felt it was dry. I had sliced filet mignon. I ordered it medium rare. Some slices were medium rare, some were well. It was tender & tasty. She had chocolate ice cream , I had cheese cake for dessert. Both were delicious. Service was excellent. Not sure I would go back."

"HORRIBLE service! I'm not one to write a review but felt due to the poor service I should warn others. I went for dinner during restaurant week with my friends and we all felt that the service was rushed and rude. The food was pretty much thrown to us, water was not even poured for us until we asked. Note, this was my third time for dinner during restaurant week (been at two other restaurants) for 2010 and just because it's restaurant week does not excuse you to treat your customers like that. To sum it up, pretty much if you are NOT middle age or older and wearing business entire don't even think that you will be given any type of service. FYI, my prime rib was good but service was so bad I would not go there again."

"This was a Restaurant Week meal. We came from South NJ for the experience. All the food with the exception of the sliced filet mignon entree was excellent. The filet entree was much tougher and non-juicier than expected for this kind of establishment. If I had paid for a normal-priced meal, this filet would have been sent back. At ordering time, my wife ordered the English cut prime rib; the waiter said that was the best selection. I tasted some of her prime rib, he was right, I should have listened to him. He was a great waiter overall, saving the meal experience. Perhaps pre-sliced filet is not a smart move, since it might tend to dry out; it should not have been on the menu in a sliced form."

"this was one of the single worst restaurant experiences i've had in NYC. My wife and I frequent many NY steak houses but had never been to Ben Benson's. We will not be back. We were initially seated in arguably the worst table in the restaurant, even though the place was empty when we got there. It was restaurant week but we had to ask for the restaurant week menu, and our waiter tried to talk us out of ordering from it. He convinced me, and I ordered a bone-in sirloin which was unedible. My wife's prime rib off the restaurant week menu was better but not by much. plus it was child size portion. service was friendly but incompetent. to top it off a great nite my coat was on the floor of the coat check room when i picked it up."

We told him that we were going to the theater after dinner so taking it home would not be practical. Our waiter said he would put it in the refrigerator so that we could pick it up after the theater. "This was my 4th time to Ben Benson's Steakhouse. I keep coming because the food/service and atmosphere is always great. Well, that was not the case this time. We were very disappointed in the food and service. When we arrived we were shown the NYC Rest week menu. We were encouraged to order off that menu. Therefore we did. We were very disappointed in the quality of the food that we received. It was like they mass produced this food and didn't take the time to prepare the quality of food we were used to. I am going to forget about this experience and give them one more chance, hoping that it was my fault for ordering off that menu. We have never had a bad meal before!"

"My boyfriend and I both had the Prime Rib Restaurant Week prix fixe menu and it was incredible. The meat was tender, juicy and absolutely delicious. I was particularly pleased with the timing of courses. The staff gave us enough time to finish the salad/soup before they took it away and brought in the entree, but we were never sitting with empty plates for long. "The Restaurant Week menu didn't really articulate what we were receiving. For the herb grilled chicken... It ended up just looking and tasting like a plain chicken salad. The "filet mignon" was also pretty mediocre--a few slices of steak mixed in with mushrooms and sort of a sad scoop of mashed potatoes. I wasn't too impressed with this experience. The highlight was the interested "bread pudding" desert. But I was so hungry from the entee so I ate all 4 loaves of free bread that I was too full to finish the pudding!"

"This was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had in NYC (and I am very much a foodie). I ordered the three course restaurant week special. The appetizer salad was nothing more than plain greens pulled from a bag and slopped onto a plate (no presentation whatsoever). My colleagues with me ordered soup (which I tasted), which were salty and unappetizing. We all ordered the fillet mignon dish. The meat was hard and chewy and a bit salty. Plus, there was something of a "gamey" taste to the beef, which was a sign of very low grade meat. Desert was bread pudding and cheese cake, both of which were mediocre at best. Noise level was very high and we could barely hear each other speak. Service was poor after we didn't order wine."

"We had to ask for the restaurant week special menu. At the bottom of the menu the statement NO SUBSTITUTIONS was added. I asked the waiter if there was milk in the mashed potatoes an he responded yes, I explained that I am allegic to milk and his response was NO SUBSTITUTIONS. I asked if the potatoes could be placed on another plate and he said yes, but they weren't. The waitor never checked to see if we likes our meal, but was attentive enough to refill our wine glasses. The salad tasted as if it had been prepaired earier and sat in the frig. I would not return to this restaurant."

"Very Disappointing...I had been wanting to go to this legendary hall of meat since moving back to NY in 2006 and finally did so on Thursday night. While I can appreciate that institutions such as this begrudingly participate in restaurant week, they sure didn't put forth their best effort after we requested to see the special price fixe menu. Needless to say, the options were limited (one beef dish) and sides were predetermined, "dry" mashed potatoes and underseasoned sliced mushrooms. While my bill with drinks before dinner exceeded $250, well above what you will pay at 99% of restaurants, it did not live up to expectations. Unfortuntately, given the economic environment I doubt I will return."

"Went for restaurant week and we were treated very good. Some top restaurants treat the people that order from the restaurant menu as 2nd class citizens. Not the case here we were treated very well. The main dish portions were good sizes and everyone got their dish cooked exactly as ordered (rare, medium rare, well done, etc.) I will definitely go back for their regular menu."

"Traditional Steak House in a positive sense. Very good wine list, including some very nice wines by the glass/half bottle. Good selection of rolls. Excellent Crab cake as starter, followed by Rare Sirloin w/ peppers and mushrooms, plus a side of delicious creamy spinach. Combined with a 1/2 bottle 2006 Esprit de Beaucastel by Perrin which was excellent. As dessert I had a 4.5oz taster of the 1997 Opus One - terrific.
All in all, you get what you ask for. NYC steak house ambiance, very good service, on the traditional side. Do not go if you are looking for a trendy experience - but do go if you want a great steak..."

"As expected, a very good experience. We purchased the "discount" steak special for $90 total. A very good price for an exculsive steak restaurant like this, and even more impressive with the amount of food. Two enormous lobster tails, splitting a 16 ounce filet, not to mention the soup, salad, hash browns and creamed spinach. And of course all of first quality. I would give the food 4.5 stars if allowed, but I erred on the high side...it was really all good. The lobster was particularly good."

"We had dinner here on New Year's Eve, and the overall experience was very good. My wife and I both had blue point oysters for appetizers, which were briny and fresh, and T-Bone steaks cooked medium. I think the steaks, although tasty, could have stayed under the broiler for just another minute or two, as my wife's was more medium rare than medium. Steakhouses, not just Ben Benson's need to allow the steaks to rest about ten minutes or so before serving to allow the juices to return to the meat. Hash browns we ordered were o.k., but we both prefer the ones at Smith & Wollensky. Enjoyed a bottle of Duckhorn Merlot only after we were advised that our first choice--a French Bordeaux was unavailable. (Update the wine list!)"

"We were seated promptly. The service was excellent. I ordered prime rib which I was very much looking forward to with this being a steak house and my hearing the radio commercial hyping itself as having the best steaks. I have had better prime rib at Outback and Longhorn and for alot less money. My daughter is not a red meat eater. I know she likes lobster so I prompted her to order it despite the fact that it was $25. a pound and the smallest they had were 3 pounds. It was very tough as one would expect of a lobster that size. So why not serve smaller lobsters. The baked potato was great. I'll give them that. Over all, very disappointing."

"Ben Benson's is a must when you're in NYC.

This is a serious chop house. Listen to the wait staff and what they recommend, they've been there as long as the furniture and truly add to the overall experience.

The bartenders also know how to pour a cocktail, nothing watered down happening here!

Great to have BB as a choice away from the cookie cutting dining experience that you get with "chain" restaurants. I hope it never changes and doubt highly that it ever will, you don't mess with perfection."

"Not Good - I would not go back!
The steak and other food was nothing special - the service was worse.
We ordered mushrooms - they never came. By the time the waiter came over we were almost finished with dinner.
We finished dinner at least 15 minutes b4 anyone came to take the plates. Overall very slow and inattentive service.
We ordered a second bottle of wine - after a long delay - "sorry we ran out of that bottle!!" I should have been told I was ordering the last bottle.
The waiter emptied the last drop of the first bottle into my glass without any regard for the sedement that is an any Bordeaux!!! He seemed miffed when I asked that the second bottle be decanted!!
This place seems to be living on its reputation. It used to be good"

"This was our first time dining here. We brought our two children ages 4 and 11 and kind of picky eaters. Our server was very accommodating, he even brought "bacon bits" not normally offered on baked potatoes for our girls. It is not always easy to have a nice dinner out with your kids but they definitely helped to make it memorable for us. We wood go back for sure."

"Open Table needs a Noise rating to indicate when restaurant noise moves into the discomfort zone and that was clearly the case on Thursday night. "Energetic" is HARDLY the word for it. We requested another table even as we were being seated for the first time because of the shouting and screaming around us. Within 20 minutes the second table was just as bad if not worse. Roasted prime rib was not as tender as I remember it. We got it medium rare and BB let us down. For just under $50 we got a tough piece of meat. Plus something mysterious happened in the kitchen when we asked for our left-overs to be packed up. Once I got home, we had half what we had left on our plates!!?? Who wanted that other half of the remaining prime rib?"

"Overall, we enjoyed our late lunch at Ben Benson's. The service was outstanding. The waiter was very accommodating as we were a party of 7, including three children. Unfortunately, the atmosphere was not what we expected as it was very casual and loud. The appetizers were very good...probably the best crabcakes I ever had. The entrees were okay. We were disappointed with the flavor and quality of the steaks."

"It was our first time and it was all we (my girlfriend & I ) expected. This was really the only true NYC steakhouse we hadn't been to. The place has a great vibe, all around us were having a great time (we love to people-watch !). And yes, Ben REALLY was there, we had a chance to chat with him briefly and he is just as amiable as he is in his ads on radio, and on-line. Our waiter was very relaxed, knowledgeable, and responded to our questions very directly and with true concern...he's been there 22 yrs. Our meals were wonderful and we really don't feel it necessary to split hairs over which steak joint has the best....we'll be going back."

"We had the 2 for $90 Sepcial which included soup, cesar salad, lobster & steak, side of cream of spinach, and side of homefries. The service was good, our food came right away and the servers were attentive. We were somewhat disappointed with the food, however, because we had read on the internet that the food supposed to be great. The salad was so-so and the lobster was overcooked. We were happy with the rest of the dinner - the steak was cooked perfectly (medium rare) and the soup & the sides were good. Overall, our experience is good, but not memorable. Given that there are so many other restaurants to try in Manhattan, we probably will not go back there again."

"Our dining experience was great at Ben Benson's. I'm not a meat eater, that's my husband and his dinner was great and the size of his steak was unbelivable. My dinner was chicken, but they only had a whole side. Asked for just the breast, and it wasn't a problem at all. The serve was pretty quick considering the place was packed! My husband was also happy about the wine list because it had his favorite wine which alot of places don't. we will definately go back."

"With all of the other good steakhouses in NY, I decided to return here for the first time in 5 years. The meat was undercooked in the center, yet the ends were tough and well done. They didnt have the first two wines I chose. It was loud and stuffy. I made a reservation yet got seated in the bar area. I'll eat in other steakhouses. Ruth's Chris is much better and I don't feel like I am on a trading floor."

"Ben Benson's is a truly outstanding steakhouse. The service is impeccable, and the steaks are perfectly prepared. The choices are abundant. The hashbrowns are a must-try - absolutely delicious. The desserts were amazing - at our table, we had cheesecake, a multi-layer gooey chocolate cake, key lime pie, a hot fudge sundae, and sorbet. We ended up sharing them all and had a hard time naming our favorite. Yes, it was loud, but it was a very festive atmosphere - there are quiet corners to be had. We realized halfway through dinner that we were dining right next to a celebrity. I would definitely go back."

"Far from my first visit to Ben Benson's signature steakhouse and certainly not my last, this past Sunday's dining experience was on par, or better, than my previous visits. The food was, as always, outstanding and the service left nothing to be desired. I varied my appetizer, salad and dinner choices and found that I now have new favorites. I did, however, stick to my signature Hendrick's martini - with some things, fate is better off not tempted.

I cannot say enough how much I enjoy spending an evening at Ben Benson's - and an evening it usually is. Because, let's be honest, why rush when there's no place I'd rather be?"

"We had a very nice overall experience- 5 buddies going out for steak. We go every other month or so to different places. We ordered a porterhouse for 2- Medium Rare, and it came out Medium Well. First time Ive ever had to send a steak back. That didn't really bother me, and did not tarnish the evening at all, but when the correct steak was brought out, it simply wasn't that good. Comapred to Luger's, Ben & Jack's, & Bobby Van's, we felt that the steaks were not up to par. The highlights for us were the creamed spinach and the cheesecake with fresh berries. Overall a nice restaurant and a nice time, but the food was overall a dissappointment."

"It did not start out so well. They tried to jam us in next to the bar that was sporting the "happy hour" crowd.

"We had a wonderful dinner at Ben Benson's on Tues, 12/1/09. We enjoyed Surf & Turf (beef t-loin & lobster tail - on special: 2 dinners/$90) as well as a strip steak dinner. The meat was good & beefy, just a tad on the chewy side. Nothing I wouldn't go back for, tho. The Potato Leek Soup was to die for! The sides were amazing - especially the hash browns & creamed spinach. Unless you enjoy a heavy taste of anchovies, I would avoid the Caesar salad, tho. Creme Brulee for dessert was exquisite! Drinks were great. Service was top notch!
Our total, for a party of 3,including several alcoholic drinks & glasses of wine was $270 - including a bit more than a 20% tip. I felt we got an amazing value for for the money.
Highly Recommended!!!"

"The place was bopping, even on Tuesday. The bar was packed, a group room on the second floor was occupied, the service was courteous and helpful, and the food was terrific. I had asked when I made my reservation if they had any wild game and sure enough when I ordered, the waiter said he had the wild boar I asked for. It was really good with 3 chops, smokey flavor and a cranberry-apple chunk sauce. The lemon-pepper shrimp were large, juicy and savory. The rice pudding was one of the best I ever had. My brother and I would definitely go back."

"The food was adequate, but the service-staff were doing us a favor if indeed they were attentive at all. Much though I liked the NY sirloin, next time we've all agreed we will go to a real restaurant, not another ho-hum steakhouse.

Seriously: some of the chains (Capital Grill, Morton's) serve far more memorable meals.

Bottom line: decent food, but nothing special in the experience whatsoever."
