"Overall, the food was very good. We could have done without the heads on the shrimp and the Swiss Steak was a tad gristly but everything else was wonderful. We especially loved having the coffee made right at our table."

"I had been here once before with a friend and returned this time with my wife to celebrate an anniversary. The ambience is quaint enough, if not a little too over the top and precious with the whole woodsman theme (servers clad in rustic shirts & vintage denim, dark woods, etc.). We enjoyed, as I had previously, the very beautiful salads and flavorful but scant spring chinook entree.
But eclipsing our time here was the sound level. At 6 o'clock on a Thursday night it was punishing and furiously loud. We had a 2-top in the middle of the floor and could barely hear each other through our meal, which we shortened and rushed so we could escape. You may find respite in a booth; otherwise prepare to assaulted with the noise level."

"The Woodsman offers tasty cocktails to start the evening with a selection of local oysters -- who knew how many different flavors you could taste in an oyster! When we sat at our table, two complimentary glasses of champagne awaited us (it was our wedding anniversary). So classy and memorable. The waitress was knowledgeable and willing to offer suggestions for wine pairings and food selection. The food, as always, was creative, inspired, and bursting with delicious flavor. The staff are remarkably friendly and informative about drink and food choices, but in an appropriate way, not in an intrusive manner."

"The freshness and quality of the ingredients could not be any better, and the flavors are imaginative yet extremely accessible. Rivals St Jack in culinary skill, but still in the "new school" category when compared to places like Higgins and Pazzo. HIGHLY recommended! My only negative criticism is that the chairs are very bizarre and almost uncomfortable, but somehow I got used to them."

"Every dish was excellent but minimal. Kale salad fabulous but only a few bites for the price. Spendy. Wonderful fish dish with broth and no bread to enjoy it. No amenities. Excellent octopus and potatoes. Excellent staff. Week night experience. I imagine it to be quite lively on week ends."

"Fantastic service and food. I am from the NW and have always been perplexed that there are not that many restaurants that mix seafood offerings with meat/game. Thank you for this place! And thank you for homemade churros. Could've eaten a platter full.
Next time, we will be sure to make reservations sooner. The drafting chairs, while cute, did a number on my back. I'll be sure to request a booth when we come in May.
Oh, and the service....best in Portland. Hands down. Super attentive, never hovering. whoever is training your FOH is VERY good at their job. Bravo."

"Great food - creative menu and the staff explained the unknowns very well. Some unique options and some delicious standards. Lovely atmosphere - classy and upscale without going overboard. Dressy or casual seem equally welcomed. Great windows for letting in the Portland sunshine. Service was great aside from a lack of attention to our drinks - cocktail glasses sat empty and entrees arrived before someone asked if we would like another drink. But that didn't tarnish the experience. Would definitely go back again and try more of the menu."

"Special occasion dining, we went for our anniversary dinner. Greeted and given champagne when our table wasn't quite ready. Waited at the bar and had constant attention from the staff. Friendly attentive with out ever being annoying. Ordered amazing Brussels sprout salad and seafood tower. Amazing display of fresh and delicious food. Drinks were spot on. Highly recommended!"

"We were very excited to try the Woodsman - we had heard many a great tale. I would have to say that overall the experience was delightful, but not the "wow" we were hoping for. I would have to say hat the russian kale caesar salad is a must - very creative and wonderful flavors. The pork chop was a full cut w/ fat attached and so I was waiting for a tender and moist chunk of hog. However, it was overcooked and needed seasoning. The lamb cut that a friend had was fantastic - I was jealous! The cioppino that made my partner had was average, but more like a soup than a stew. Wonderful cocktails and beer selection - a good place for happy hour if they have one."

"Overall, we had a very nice evening. I felt I made the wrong menu choice. I had the Lamb Saddle, which was flavorful, but I thought overpriced for the portion size. I saw other patrons with two of the other menu choices I was considering, the pork chop and the hamburger, both of which were much more sizable portions for less money. I appreciate lamb is a more expensive meat and the presentation required more effort, but $32 dollars is the price of finer steaks other places and because of the fat ring on the outside, there simply wasn't much meat.I would probably go back, but order something else.

"Wow, This place was one of my best meals ever in Portland. Earthy, comfortable vibe with a strong focus on quality ingredients presented in a simple way. "Been there a number of times. Food is always excellent. Service can be inconsistent. I am doing this review about the multiple calls about my reservation, including a call to my wife which went into her voice mail. Essentially the woman told her that they would release the table if I was a no-show. My daughter was in fact there but they wouldn't seat her until I arrived, which I did 15 minutes after the scheduled reservation. Then I was informed by Open Table that Woodsman said I was a "no show"! When my wife made this reservation she was limited to certain hours because I guess the restaurant "reserves" tables for walk ins! "We had a great meal with some out of town relatives. They were very impressed, and loved the seafood bar! My mussels were the best I have EVER had! Also, our server was excellent, helping me find something for my 5 year old. He was attentive but not too pesky, and met our requests. And some were not easy....melted butter instead of cocktail sauce, DONE! Definitely will recommend The Woodsman!"

"This was our second time there. There were 4 of us and we ordered quite a few things. It didn't seem as good as the first time. The meat, in particular, was tough and over-salted. One dish was outstanding. The other things were pretty good but expensive for something that was pretty good but not great."

"We had cocktails, along w deviled eggs w smoked paprika, followed by red & green loose leaf lettuce w oil & lemon. Our very helpful server recommended the Cameron 2010 Arley's Leap Pinot Noir to accompany dinner, & this proved to be a great suggestion. For our first plate we enjoyed mussels, octopus, & chorizo in fish broth, w parsley, sherry, & smoked paprika. We then shared a delicious fried quail, w beans, thick cut cole slaw, & a cheese biscuit. We finished by sipping more of the fine Oregon Pinot along w a few cinnamon cocoa almonds.
Service was great door to door. Ambience was pleasant, & while the place is noisy, didn't prevent easy conversation.

"Very good dining experience....we arrived 5 min. before opening and the door was unlocked so we went in as it
was raining outside......we were asked to leave and come back in 5 min. I asked if we could just stand inside
the door and was told no. I understand not wanting folks in before opening but there were only 2 of us and
no one else was there. I was just disappointing but we didn't let it ruin our evening. Then the lady that asked
us to leave ended up being our waitress......"

"This is a really enjoyable place with great food, great service and its fun. For starters it has very creative cocktails and a strong wine by the glass offering. The menu is creative as well with nice starters (the deviled eggs are excellent) to go with cocktails and then short but interesting menu for first and second courses. Not a lot of dessert choices relative to some places but it is fine.. The desserts are wow. The oilve oil cake and ice cream was my favorite."
