Carmelo's Ristorante Italiano - Houston
Carmelo’s Ristorante Italiano, Houston, is located in the Energy Corridor on Memorial Drive between Dairy Ashford and Eldridge. Open since 1981, Carmelo's, has been awarded the Seal of "Ospitalita Italiana" from the Italian Government for our use of authentic Italian products and the preparation of genuine Italian cuisine. We have created a menu that is not only carefully thought out and authentically Italian, but also one that uses the finest quality beef, veal and poultry and the freshest of seafood, and when available local produce. With an extensive wine list and options ranging from an award winning Risotto with Truffles, a tableside cooked Steak Diane and gluten free, vegetarian and vegan fare it is our aim that everyone will be satisfied. Our delectable desserts include homemade specialties such as Tiramisu and Millefoglie. Come on by it's like going to Italy without the jet lag! We are also in Austin.

"We decided to celebrate our 9 year anniversary at Carmelo's. Recently, moved back to Houston from Jersey. In Jersey, we had a favorite Italian Dining Restaurant, that was romantic, friendly and well as great food. Here in Houston we were looking for a place to hang our hat. Well, Carmelo's is that place and will defintely be going back."

"It was a bit of a mixture. It was a buffet but the restaurant was not set up for the traffic for a buffet. It was a brunch but not an omelette station in sight. Many of the dishes were not replaced speedily and I found empty pans of the more popular items. The salad area was good and the desserts were very good. The hot dishes were not all that hot. I felt the price was higher than the quality which is a shame since this is a very nice neighborhood Italian restaurant. I think perhaps the buffet was a little too ambitious for the staff and facility."

"We loved it from the first morsel. Mom loved the smoked salmon and I loved the fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, mozzarella, and basil in the Caprese salad. Next were the mushrooms we saw them sautée in garlic butter and other hot dishes (lasagna, tender short ribs, mashed potatoes, and a number of other dishes we had to have a small serving of). The delicious bread that accompanied our meal was also used in the best bread pudding I have ever tasted, topped with fresh whipped cream. Coming in at a close second was the tiramisu and behind that the flan. (I had a little of each.) Alternating between recorded Italian music and live accordion music and greeted at the door by family owners, the atmosphere was perfect."

"We took our mom here for Mother's Day. It was a buffet special, but we chose the restaurant because it had a vegetarian section in their menu. The buffet was limited in terms of vegetarian items, but everything else was good. Would rather come back to see their full menu items than what was there for the buffet before I give a definitive review..."

Service started kind of slow (took awhile for a waiter to hit our table) but it was Mothers day, so we understood.

"Carmelo's food was good. I thought the atmosphere excellent. The waiter however gave us almost no attention. We had to ask other waiters for help three times. The restaurant was not busy. Not sure what was going on. It looked like there was plenty of waiters.

"Went on Saturday evening to celebrate Mother's Day weekend. Made reservations for 3 and got our table very quickly. However, it took about 15min before we were given our menus. Someone came to pour dipping oil on a plate but we didn't get bread until another 20 minutes later. For a special occasion weekend, the place was not terribly crowded, so that was no excuse. Food was good overall. Our waiter was a big disappointment. He was not friendly, never refilled our drinks, never asked us how our dinner was, and took a long time to get us our bill and run the credit card. He even didn't box us are leftovers correctly."

"I usually get the fish with the mango sauce and it is hit or miss. Sometimes it is great and sometimes it is not. Saturday the fish was dry and there was not enough sauce on the fish. I also had a salad with greens, avocado, tomato and cucumber. There was barely any dressing on the salad and there was only 1 piece of tomato and 1 piece of cucumber."

"The service is always great but this time we had reservations for a party of 20, so service was really slow. We got there at 1140am. Our food order was taken around 1230 to 1240. It also understandably took a while to get our food. Anyway, next time we will preorder the food. Everyone enjoyed their dish. Maybe a little music in the private area would be great. "Absolutely authentic Italian cuisine. The Quinoa Pasta with Veal on both the regular and gluten free menu is without a doubt the BEST thing I've eaten all year. The wine was excellent, the gluten free bread was delicious. My husband's Pasta with Summer Vegetables was delicious as well. It's wonderful to find a local Italian restaurant that can compete with my at home cooking, especially when it comes to gluten free, organic, dairy free options!
The ambiance on Saturday with the live accordion was charming. And, yes to agree with a previous review...the chiming of the clock every 15 minutes was indeed a disturbing distraction from the meal and ambiance. But this is only negative.
The regular menu is superb as well. Can't wait to retur"

"We went for the first time this past saturday night. I took my husband,daughters and his parents to celebrate his birthday. We went in and immediately fell in love with the place. They had our reservation ready, which is always nice. We had a great table right in front of the live music, which was very pleasant. The place is very nicely decorated feels like you're in little italy. The ambiance was perfect. Our food was delicious and the portions were very generous. Service was superb. Not rushed at all they really know how to make you feel welcome. Carmelo's left a very good impression and we will defintely go back!!"

"Our server was either new or incompetent, so service was very poor. We had to ask her for drink and bread refills and even had to flag her down so we could place our order. Later in the service other wait staff worked to pick up her slack--these people were very sharp and attentive. As for the food--complete disappointment. I paid $38 dollars for a 5oz slice of dried out filet mignon, five small potato wedges and five carrots. If the food had been awesome, these small portions might have been acceptable. Needless to say, it wasn't. Also, I'm not sure about the rationale for having a scaled down menu for Valentine's Day. Thus, Carmelo's will never see my face again."

"Went on a Sunday night and thought they were closed by the looks of the parking lot. So glad we decided to double check if they were open. The food was absolutely amazing. We asked if they could make veal Parmesan - they did and it was the best I've had. We asked for the sauce on our spaghetti to be the sauce that the appetizer meatballs came in - they did and wow, great choice in a sauce.
Have nothing but great things to say about their food and the service being so accommodating to our choices. We will absolutely be back. Soon."

"We hadn't been to Carmelo's in a while and it was nice to be greeted by Carmelo himself as he's always been most pleasant to talk with. My short rib special was excellent and my wife enjoyed her gamberi as usual. The only mild disappointment was that the dessert cart wasn't of the same magnificance as it used to be - but alas things change and usually not for the better."

"We knew this would be a fine dining experience based on other reviews. But we weren't prepared for it to be some of the best food we'd ever had. The simple appetizer of veal meatballs in a tomato was awesome. The flavor just lingered and lingered and we both felt a meal of those alone would be among the most decadent we could ever have. My fettucine carbonara prepared tableside was phenomenal -- easily the best carbonara I've had (including my wife's. My wife had the veal scallopini marsala and she thought it was the best she's had. I tried a taste but it didn't work with the carbonara. Our wine, a 2007 Gattinara at $45, was a bit pricey (maybe?), but it was wonderful and managed to complement both meals well."
