"We went for the $1 Taco Wednesdays, but after seeing the menu, was tempted to try everything else. We will save that for the return trip. I was nicely surprised the atmosphere was cozy, people warm. It pleased both my husband and I. He prefers no 'fufu' comfort/sports-bar-ish places. I like trying new places and don't mind a little 'fufu'. As you can imagine, it's a little difficult to find places for us both. I will come back for the fish specialities."

"We dined during happy hour, which saved us money on wine and one of our appetizers. It may also have contributed to the noise level, as there seemed to be quite a boisterous crowd in the bar area - all having a good time. We ordered lobster bisque and grilled calamari, each of which was outstanding. 5-stars for sure. We had fish and chips, which were adequate (3-star), but I prefer flat fish to the "rolled" type. We had the lobster special (Sat), but did not feel it was worth the effort or the price (2-star). We will try other items on the menu that sounded as though they could be 5-star again. The service was excellent, the presentation of the dishes was very nice. We enjoyed ourselves."

"Went for Denver Restaurant Week. Read some of the reviews before hand was a little skeptical about going but it turned out to be good got are table real quick. Waitress was good. Food was good my Salmon was a little dry but tasty. Would I go again sure."

"We had reservations for 7:30 pm (for a group of 4) and arrived at that time. The hostess said they were running behind an it would be about 20 minutes. Time passed by and we were still standing at the bar. Finally, an hour had passed and we were seated. We were told by our waiter that though we had had quite a wait the service from here on would improve - it didn't. We finally left the restaurant at 11 pm. It took that long to get served our meal, get a check and get out of there. It was Restaurant week, where they have a special on a 3-course meal. Seems to me service should have been even faster because the majority of the dining room was ordering off a set menu. Not sure what happened, but they were not prepared at for the rush."

"We went for Restaurant week, so our menu options were limited. The full menu looks delicious though! I had the lobster bisque which was delicious. For dinner was Sole wrapped around artichoke hearts and crab meat, with polenta cake and asparagus. It was good, but nothing to write home about. My husband had oysters and said 5 out of the 6 oysters were good. There is an outdoor section and tiki bar that looks like it would be lots of fun in the summer. I think this is more of a beer and appetizer kind of place, but maybe if I had ordered something off the full menu my mind would change. We had a one year old with us and they were speedy in getting his food out. Would definitey try again!"

"Very quaint restaurant. Front room is very nice, back room is bar-like, no ambiance at all. Food is mixed; 2 in the party had the fish and chips, which were excellent. I had the cioppino, which is really just a bowl of overcooked fish, tastless broth and soggy bread pieces. We also had the blue crab dip, which was way too runny as you couldn't scoop it up from the plate without using a spoon. As it was meant to be put on baguette pieces or vegetables, it did not work, especially on a sliver of carrot. All in all, not a great dining experience and one which will not be repeated."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner - good food very attractively presented, excellent service, pleasant atmosphere. Glad we came at 5:30 because when we left at 7:30 the line of waiting patrons was out the door - but probably worth the wait. Fun place."

"The food was excellent. Just did not get to adequately enjoy it because the main meals were delivered 5 minutes after the appetizers. The waitress apologized but did not offer to take it back -- only told us that she brought the food (too early) rather than have it burn up or dry out under the lights. I was on a second date with a new man, so I did not say anything, but he expressed politely that he was not happy about the meals being delivered too soon. Both the salmon and the sole were delicious, as was the ceviche appetizer. I can't comment on my friend's mussels because I did not taste them, but he said they were pretty good."

"Went to Max Grill for the first time during 5280 restaurant week. I was impressed with my tenderloin although my dates entree was boring and bland. She had the crab rapped sole. There wasn't a lot of flavor. About the service everyone was very friendly and helpful. Although are serve did not seem to have a lot of knowledge about the menu or the wines. We asked about a three different wines. The serve suggested one of the three although he said it was "the more popular wine of the three but he had never tried the wine". I felt the serve was looking to up sale. Good for him to increase his sales although make a better attempt at it.

Over all my experience was not that bad and I will return at some point just not in any rush."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our $52.80 dining experience at Max's. They had an excellent selection to choose from and it was very good value for the Denver Restaurant Week. Although it isn't a white tablecloth restaurant, I loved the feel of the place and we would definitely return for dinner in the future. We've heard that it is a great place to dine in the summer, so we will treat ourselves to a dinner there during the warmer months of the year. I would definitely recommend it to our friends."

"This is a great restaurant in a fun local neighborhood. The ambiance is very comfortable, older building that is true to its history. The wait staff are very friendly and the place has just the right level of energy, without being overbearing. But the real thing is the food. This is an extraordinary locally owned and managed seafood restaurant in a town that's 1,200 miles from the nearest beach. Well worth the trip. we'll be back"

"Food was great... service was VERY slow. Took us 15-20 minutes for a glass of wine. Then another 15 for our server to come take our order. Food came out quickly. Servers need to work on locking on to tables and working with a sense of urgency."

"Great flexibility in picking your fish and choosing your sauce. Cozy table by the fireplace. Great waiter, Chris. Little to no turnover in staff - that says they are doing something right! Happy Hour at the bar goes to 7pm!"

"We went to Max Gill and Grill on a very busy Friday night. I had the grouper, and my husband had the cioppino - both were very good. The fish was done perfectly, and the roasted potatoes were fresh and sweet. Service was excellent. We were seated immediately, and the food came out of the kitchen quickly, especially considering how busy they were. If you are a cioppino enthusiast, be aware that their version is spicy. We would definitely return."

"The food and service were excellent as usual. We were in a booth right next to the bar which was much too loud for our group to have normal conversation. If we go again on a Friday night, we will ask to be seated further from the bar."

"My group of four found this to be a friendly spot with very good food for the price. The lobster bisque was a great deal at $4 a cup, the soup of the day, a roasted tomato, was vey flavorful, and the grilled artic char, offered as a catch of the day, was well prepared and priced."

"Excellent--Max Gill & Grill is one of our favorite restaurants. We often take friends there, especially if we want casual but great food and service at reasonable prices. Never been disappointed. Service is always wonderful, servers are VERY knowledgable and the menu has lots for everyone, no matter what their preferences. I'm a vegetarian and sometimes have difficulty finding something really good with decent sized portions. The biggest problem I have at M G&G is having to decide between MANY choices.

FYI, we lived in Maine for several years & M G&G's Lobster roll is the best we've found outside the state of Maine."

"I'm usually a fan of every type of food; including oysters. Their fried oysters were fried with some type of corn meal and just didn't seem to go with anything. for 1.50 each oyster, it was not worth it at all. But the rest of the food was delicious: shark, prime rib (which btw was a dollar an ounce during happy hour). Although the 16 OZ prime did have about 5 OZ of fat on it."

"After reading mixed reviews on Open Table we still decided to give it a try. Four of us had dinner there.

Short points:
1. Online menu prices are old - be prepared to pay more.
2. Food was way overpriced for what is served. I had the $27 Cioppino and it was decent but not great for $27. Other three meals were well below average. One being the steak oscar - avoid it.
3. Had to ask for bread with the meal. If you go don't bother getting the stale bread.

Basically there are much better choices for food/seafood in Denver for the price."

"I had the shrimp po boy. It was HORRIBLE. 4 pieces of PROCESSED shrimp (looked like chicken mcnuggets but smaller) on a dry roll. To redeem themselves, I'd have to say their clam chowder is the best I've ever had."

"Max Gill 'n Grill ALWAYS accommodates any special requests, such as seating a newly-engaged couple by the fireplace for our celebration of their engagement; special out-of-the-way seating for a romantic dinner, etc. I love the freshness of their food and the seafood is always exceptional. Don't forget the burgers which, in my mind, are currently the BEST in Denver!"

"As for ambiance, Max Gill and Grill is really a tale of two restaurants. If you're fortunate enough to be seated in the front part near the fireplace it is cozy, warm and wonderful, like sitting in the library of your favorite uncle's estate. But if you're in the back part it's like sitting on the dock waiting for Hemingway to show up to go deep sea fishing. But no matter where you sit the food never disappoints and it's worth the trip!"

"This has been one of our favorite restaurants for a long time. Food is usually very good, service is always friendly. However, things have started to slip a little as of late.

For starters, one of our favorite aspects of Max's is their "Happy Hour" appetizer menu, which is available in their dining room until 6:00 pm. We frequently order from this menu and have found there has been a noticeable increase in prices and the portions have either remained unchanged or, in some cases, seem to have shrunk.

Food quality is less consistent. Recently, we ordered the steamed clams, which come with garlic toast, and found one piece of toast to be fresh and delicious and the other old and stale. Also, the new crab/shrimp enchilada was too spicy."

"We loved the environment of the restaurant - lively and fun and the fireplace set a nice mood on a cold December evening.

Unfortunately though we were less than impressed with the food. I ordered the salmon which by itself would have been pretty tasty although it was a bit overcooked. I ordered it with the tomato, basil garlic sauce which tasted like a bad, bland, version of bottled spaghetti sauce. The vegetable medley the accomodated the salmon was laden with so much butter that it completely covered any taste of the yummy veggies that they otherwise could have been.

When our food arrived the orders were wrong. The waiter acted as if we were imposing on him by pointing it out."

"The red ruby trout with brown rice and the vegetable medley was fantastic! The mahi mahi was just ok in comparison. The short ribs were great.

We went on a Friday night, it felt a bit cramped where we were seated, the waitress didn't come around all the time, but she was always friendly and had a smile on her face.

I'll definitely go, again, but I'll try it on a slower night/during the day to get a better feel for the place."

"Very good food, portions were generous, food was well prepared and the menu was large enough to have something for everyone without being too overwhelming.. We went on a Sunday night and they were having a prime rib special. Wine list was large enough and reasonably priced. Good value for the money. The fireplace added a nice touch on a cold night.
